Chapter 55 - The Promise Beneath the Lanterns

The festival continued long after midnight.

Music echoed through the crystal forests.

Laughter drifted between glowing lanterns.

For one evening, every burden seemed lighter.

Zayden and Aria wandered away from the crowd, following a quiet stone path that led to a hill overlooking the city.

Below them, thousands of lanterns floated into the emerald sky.

"They look like stars," Aria whispered.

Zayden smiled.

"Or maybe the stars are trying to look like them."

She laughed softly.

"You've become surprisingly poetic."

"I'm blaming you."

"Convenient."

---

They sat beneath an ancient silver tree.

Its leaves shimmered whenever the wind passed through them.

For a while, neither spoke.

There was no need.

Sometimes silence carried more meaning than words.

Finally, Aria broke it.

"Do you ever wonder..."

"What our lives would've been if none of this happened?"

Zayden leaned back against the tree.

"I probably would've buried myself in work."

"And you?"

She looked toward the lanterns.

"I would've kept searching for answers."

She smiled faintly.

"I just didn't know I was searching for you."

The words hung gently in the night air.

Zayden looked at her.

For once...

He had no clever reply.

Only honesty.

"I'm glad you found me."

Aria's cheeks warmed.

She looked away with a small smile.

"So am I."

---

Back at the festival, Captain Lyra and Elysia watched from a distance.

"They're finally happy," Lyra said.

Elysia nodded.

"They earned it."

The Keeper joined them.

His gaze rested on the two figures beneath the silver tree.

"I used to think peace meant the absence of conflict."

He smiled quietly.

"Now I think it means having moments worth protecting."

The Null King stood beside his brother.

"You've grown sentimental."

"So have you."

The Null King didn't deny it.

Instead, he watched the lanterns rise.

"I never imagined a world could celebrate freedom like this."

The Keeper replied,

"Neither did I."

---

As the final lantern disappeared into the stars...

A bell rang across the Seventh Layer.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everyone fell silent.

An old storyteller stepped onto the festival stage.

He carried a weathered book bound in blue leather.

"The first page of every age deserves to be remembered."

He opened the book.

But the pages were blank.

The crowd murmured in confusion.

The storyteller smiled.

"It isn't empty."

"It simply hasn't been written yet."

He looked toward Zayden and Aria.

"The Age of Choice begins tonight."

The crowd applauded.

Not for heroes.

Not for kings.

But for the future itself.

---

Far beyond the festival...

The mysterious observer watched the celebration.

For the first time...

A single tear of silver light fell into the endless void.

It vanished before anyone could see it.

A quiet voice echoed through eternity.

> "Perhaps... this is what creation was always meant to become."

The stars answered with a gentle glow.

And beneath the lantern-filled sky...

Zayden reached for Aria's hand once more.

This time...

She didn't let go.
