Chapter 48 - The Battle of Two Keepers

The sky over the Second Layer fractured into ribbons of silver and black.

Below, the floating capital fell silent.

No one dared move.

Two brothers stood facing one another.

The Keeper.

The Null King.

Neither reached for a weapon.

For a long moment, they simply looked at each other.

The Keeper spoke first.

"...You've changed."

The Null King gave a faint laugh.

"So have you."

A pause.

"We've both had a very long time."

The wind carried the silence between them.

Then the Keeper asked the question he had carried for countless ages.

"Why didn't you come back?"

The Null King's silver eyes softened for the briefest instant.

"I did."

The Keeper frowned.

"You never saw me."

A memory appeared between them.

A lonely figure standing at the edge of a dying Layer.

Waiting.

Waiting for days.

Then years.

Then centuries.

No one came.

The vision faded.

"I waited for my brother."

The Null King's voice was calm.

"But the Keeper was always busy saving someone else."

The words struck harder than any blade.

The Keeper lowered his gaze.

"...I'm sorry."

Everyone froze.

Captain Lyra stared in disbelief.

The Keeper...

Apologized.

The Null King remained silent.

Then he shook his head.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

"The Layers still suffer."

"They still die."

"And people still call it freedom."

Zayden stepped forward.

"Freedom isn't the reason worlds die."

The Null King's attention shifted.

"The Free Anchor."

"You finally speak."

Zayden met his gaze.

"You've mistaken pain for failure."

"And you've mistaken control for peace."

The Null King smiled beneath the obsidian mask.

"You sound just like him."

He glanced at the Keeper.

"I remember when he believed that too."

The Keeper looked at his brother.

"I still do."

The silence stretched.

Then...

The Null King slowly removed his obsidian mask.

Everyone held their breath.

His face looked almost identical to the Keeper's.

Only one difference.

Thin silver cracks spread across his skin like shattered glass.

Scars left by centuries of carrying the power of Null.

Aria whispered,

"...He's breaking apart."

Elysia nodded sadly.

"The power he chose is consuming him."

The Null King heard her.

"It is."

His voice held no bitterness.

"No regret."

"It was the cost."

He looked toward the countless floating islands.

"And I paid it willingly."

Darkness gathered around him.

Not violent.

Not chaotic.

Silent.

The Keeper raised one hand.

Silver light answered.

The two forces met in the sky.

Instead of exploding...

They froze.

Light and darkness intertwined like two rivers refusing to separate.

The entire Second Layer trembled.

The compass in Zayden's pocket burst into brilliant light.

The Keeper turned toward him.

"Don't interfere."

Zayden frowned.

"Why?"

"Because this isn't your battle."

The Null King nodded in agreement.

"For once..."

"My brother is right."

The brothers stepped forward together.

Silver and black collided.

The sky erupted.

Time itself seemed to stop.

The floating islands hung motionless.

Raindrops froze in midair.

Every person became trapped in a single heartbeat.

Only three people could still move.

The Keeper.

The Null King.

And...

Zayden.

The Null King looked surprised.

"...Interesting."

The Keeper stared at him.

"The compass."

Zayden looked down.

The silver compass had transformed.

Its needle was gone.

In its place...

A single glowing key.

The Keeper's expression changed completely.

"No..."

Elysia gasped.

"It awakened."

The Null King looked at the key for a long time.

Then, unexpectedly...

He laughed.

Not cruelly.

Almost with relief.

"So..."

"It finally chose someone."

The key pulsed once.

A new message appeared in the air.

THE GATE OF THE FINAL LAYER HAS BEEN UNLOCKED.

Silence.

The Keeper slowly closed his eyes.

"I was afraid of this day."

The Null King whispered,

"I've been waiting for it."

Far beyond the battlefield...

A colossal gate, larger than galaxies, slowly began to open.

And from the darkness beyond it...

Something breathed.
