The name lingered in the rain.
THE NULL KING
No one spoke.
Not Zayden.
Not Aria.
Not even the Keeper.
For the first time since they had met him, the Keeper looked... uneasy.
Zayden broke the silence.
"Who is he?"
The Keeper's gaze drifted toward the stars.
"A long time ago, before the Layers were stable, there was an Anchor who refused to let go."
Aria frowned.
"An Anchor?"
The Keeper nodded.
"He believed freedom would always lead to chaos. So when his world reached the end of its cycle..."
A pause.
"He chose to keep absolute control."
Zayden's expression hardened.
"What happened?"
"He succeeded."
The answer stunned them.
"For a while."
The Keeper continued.
"His world became perfect."
"No wars."
"No pain."
"No rebellion."
"But..."
"He erased choice."
Rain fell harder.
"The people stopped dreaming."
"They stopped creating."
"They stopped living."
"The world survived."
"A pause."
"But its soul died."
Aria whispered,
"And the Anchor?"
The Keeper's eyes darkened.
"He couldn't accept that he had failed."
"So he searched for other worlds."
"Other Layers."
"He decided that if every world was controlled..."
"No one would ever suffer again."
Zayden clenched his fists.
"So that's the Null King."
"Yes."
"He doesn't conquer worlds."
"He empties them."
Silence settled over the rooftop.
The weight of those words was heavier than any battle.
The compass glowed again.
This time, a single star disappeared from the map.
Without a sound.
Without an explosion.
Simply...
Gone.
The Keeper closed his eyes.
"We're too late."
Aria stared at the empty place on the map.
"What happens to the people?"
The Keeper answered softly.
"They're forgotten."
"Even by history."
"No graves."
"No memories."
"As if they never existed."
A cold wind swept across the rooftop.
Zayden looked at the compass.
"We're stopping him."
The Keeper met his eyes.
"I hoped you'd say that."
Aria stepped beside Zayden.
"You're not going alone."
He looked at her.
"You know this won't be like before."
"I know."
"It may take us beyond our world."
"I know."
"We may never return."
Aria smiled, calm and unwavering.
"Then we'll face it together."
The Keeper watched them in silence.
Then, for the first time in centuries...
He felt hope.
He raised his hand.
The compass expanded into a circle of silver light.
A doorway.
Beyond it stretched an endless sky filled with floating worlds.
"The Second Layer," he said quietly.
"Once you cross..."
"There is no turning back until the journey is complete."
Zayden looked at his home one last time.
The city lights shimmered beneath the rain.
People laughed.
Cars passed.
Life continued.
Exactly as they had fought for.
He smiled.
"It's worth protecting."
He reached for Aria's hand.
She took it without hesitation.
Together...
They stepped toward the doorway.
Behind them, the rain stopped.
Ahead of them...
A universe of endless possibilities waited.
And somewhere beyond those countless stars...
The Null King smiled.
"They're coming."
His throne of black crystal overlooked a sky with no stars at all.
"Good."
"I've been waiting for an Anchor who still believes in freedom."
The darkness around him stirred.
One by one...
Forgotten worlds appeared behind his throne.
Silent.
Empty.
Waiting.
