Chapter 47 - Chapter 47:Aftermath

Elsewhere in the deep forest..

The forest had swallowed the sounds of the town.

Rain drummed steadily against pine branches, washing ash and dust from the leaves. The deeper Lira had gone, the quieter everything became.

She sat with her back against a large moss-covered boulder, knees drawn close, listening.

Not with her ears.

With her mind.

She let her telepathy expand cautiously, brushing against the scattered thoughts of frightened civilians and first responders still fleeing the outskirts of town. She avoided looking through anyone's eyes for long, gathering only fragments from their minds..

...it's over...

...that thing was eaten ...

...I saw the wolf thing eating eat ...

...run before he comes here and eats us too. ...

Lira opened her eyes, a bit stunned..

Then.

A small, relieved laugh escaped her before she sighed, letting the back of her head rest against the cool stone.

"...You actually did it."

The tension she'd been carrying since Devin told her to run finally loosened.

Closing her eyes again, she focused.

Instead of searching, she sent.

A gentle pulse of thought spread through the rain-soaked forest.

Devin...

I'm here.

Follow my voice.

She repeated it, careful not to push too hard.

Not a command.

Just a beacon.

Back with Devin.

I froze.

There.

A faint tug brushed against the edge of my thoughts.

Not instinct.

Not scent.

Lira.

I blinked once, then couldn't help smiling.

"So that's where you are.. .."

The mental call came again.

Clearer this time.

My nose caught her scent a heartbeat later, rain having carried it through the trees.

Without another glance toward the ruined town behind me, I broke into a sprint.

The forest blurred.

Mud splashed beneath my feet as I weaved effortlessly between ancient trunks. Branches bent aside as I passed, the rain steadily washing away soot, dirt, and the last traces of the night's battle from my fur.

The storm had become strangely comforting.

Cold.

Clean.

Alive.

The further I ran, the stronger the familiar scent became.

Then...

I saw her.

Curled against the boulder exactly where the mental trail ended.

She looked up the instant I stepped into the clearing.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Relief crossed her face so quickly she couldn't hide it.

"You came back."

I gave a small nod.

"Told you I would."

She stood and hurried over, stopping just in front of me.

"...Are you .. okay?"

I glanced down at myself.

The rain had washed most of the grime away. My breathing had settled, and the worst of my injuries had already faded beneath steadily healing skin.

"I've been better," I admitted as I stretched out, flexing my arms.

She let out a breath that sounded suspiciously close to a laugh.

"I was expecting that answer."

The rain continued to fall between the trees.

For the first time since they had escaped containment, there were no alarms.

No helicopters overhead.

No shouting.

Just the sound of the storm and two fugitives standing in a quiet clearing.

Lira looked back toward the distant glow on the horizon where the town lay beyond the forest.

"They're going to come looking for us again."

" yeah, They will, they always do those pests ."

"And they'll probably bring something worse."

I met her gaze.

"Then we keep moving until we figure something out ."

She nodded.

"...Together?"

A faint smile crossed my face.

"Together."

Without another word, they turned away from the distant lights and disappeared deeper into the rain-soaked wilderness, knowing the brief silence around them was only the calm before the next pursuit.

Meanwhile...

Undisclosed Foundation Facility — O5 Council Chamber

The chamber was silent.

A circular table sat beneath dim lighting, each seat occupied by a shadowed figure. No names. No faces clearly visible.

Only voices.

On the central screen, recovered aerial footage played for the third time.

Frame by frame.

The destruction of the town.

The impossible battle.

And finally...

The last recorded moments of SCP-096 before the feed dissolved into static from the overwhelming anomalous interference.

The recording ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

One Council member finally broke the silence.

"...Run the final sequence again."

The footage replayed.

Another member leaned forward.

"The regenerative response ceased."

"Our instruments recorded the same anomaly," another replied. "The target's normal recovery pattern did not resume after the latter stages of the engagement."

A skeptical voice cut through the room.

"Or we simply lost observation."

Silence.

Then the same member continued.

"There remains a possibility SCP-096 is not permanently neutralized. We have insufficient evidence to conclude otherwise."

Another Council member slowly folded their hands.

"Perhaps."

They looked toward the frozen image of Devin.

"But we do have sufficient evidence that SCP-6700-L demonstrated an interaction we have never documented."

A different voice spoke.

"He did not merely survive."

"He overcame."

The room grew quiet again.

One of the older members exhaled slowly.

"If the footage is authentic... then our understanding of both anomalies is incomplete."

Another nodded.

"Regardless of SCP-096's current status, we cannot leave that scene unsecured."

A new file appeared on the table display.

OPERATION: VEIL RESTORATION

Objectives illuminated one after another.

Recover all anomalous evidence.

Secure biological samples if present.

Isolate electronic recordings.

Administer amnestics to civilians exposed to anomalous activity.

Restore the appearance of an industrial explosion as the official explanation.

The proposal received quiet approval.

One final question remained.

"What of SCP-6700-L?"

The answer came almost immediately.

"Do not underestimate him again."

No one argued.

...

Back with Devin and Lira,

Deep in the Forest

Morning sunlight filtered through wet branches.

The storm had finally passed.

Birdsong cautiously returned to the forest.

Devin sat beneath an enormous pine tree, now back in his human form. Fresh clothes from the motel supplies replaced the ones lost during earlier transformations.

Across from him, Lira sat cross-legged on the damp earth, quietly watching the stream nearby.

Neither spoke for a while.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

Just thoughtful.

Finally, Lira sighed.

"So..."

She tossed a small pebble into the water.

"We're fugitives from two organizations."

Devin gave a small nod.

"Seems that way."

She smiled weakly.

"Somehow saying it out loud makes it sound even worse."

He leaned back against the tree.

"The Foundation won't stop."

"No."

"The G.O.C won't either."

"No."

Another pause settled between them.

Lira looked toward him.

"So what do we do?"

Devin was quiet for several moments.

His thoughts drifted to the spirit realm.

To the old shaman.

To the wolf spirits.

To the woman covered in glowing white tribal markings.

Their words echoed more clearly now than they ever had before.

Control yourself...

Become the hunter who controls the beast...

He looked down at his hands.

"I keep getting stronger."

Lira nodded.

"I've noticed."

"But strength alone isn't enough."

She raised an eyebrow.

"That's... surprisingly wise."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"I learned that the hard way."

The breeze stirred the trees overhead.

"We need somewhere neither side expects."

Lira rested her chin on one knee.

"And?"

"And I need to understand what I'm becoming before they force another fight."

She looked at him carefully.

"You think there are answers out there?"

"I know there are."

The certainty in his voice surprised even him.

Lira stood, stretching.

"Well..."

She offered him a hand.

"Then let's go find them."

Devin looked at her outstretched hand for a moment before taking it.

She pulled him to his feet.

Together they started walking deeper into the wilderness.

Behind them, two powerful organizations reorganized their pursuit.

Ahead of them...

Only uncertainty.

And the hope that somewhere beyond the forests and mountains lay answers neither the Foundation nor the G.O.C had yet uncovered.
