Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: “The Distance That Hurts More Than Fear”

This wasn't just survival anymore.

This was war.

Between—

Power…

And heart.

The war ended.

But nothing felt over.

The night slowly faded into morning, but the light that filled the sky didn't feel warm. It felt distant—like something far away that couldn't reach them anymore.

Han Soo-min stood near the large glass window in the Black Lotus headquarters, watching the city wake up below.

Cars moved.

People walked.

Life continued.

As if nothing had happened.

"…How can everything just go back to normal?" she whispered.

Her voice was quiet, but heavy.

Because for her—

Nothing was normal anymore.

Behind her, the room remained silent.

Kang Jae-hyun stood near the door, watching her.

He hadn't slept.

Hadn't rested.

Hadn't even changed.

Because his mind—

Was still stuck in that moment.

The gun.

The hesitation.

Her voice.

"Don't choose me."

Those words echoed louder than any gunshot.

"…You should rest," he said finally.

She didn't turn.

"…I'm not tired."

A lie.

But he didn't call it out.

"…Then eat."

"…I'm not hungry."

Another lie.

Silence followed.

The distance between them—

Felt larger than the room itself.

Minutes passed.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Then—

"…Why did you stop?"

Her voice broke the silence.

Jae-hyun's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…What?"

She turned slowly.

"…Last night."

A pause.

"…You could've ended it."

Her gaze was steady.

"…But you didn't."

Silence.

"…Because of you."

The answer came quickly.

Without hesitation.

Her chest tightened.

"…That's exactly what I'm afraid of."

A long pause.

"…Why?"

She looked at him—

Truly looked.

"…Because I don't want to be the reason you lose yourself."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"…I saw you."

A pause.

"…Not just last night."

Another pause.

"…Before that too."

Her eyes softened.

"…When you lost control."

Jae-hyun's expression hardened.

"…That's who I am."

"…No."

Her voice was stronger now.

"…That's not all you are."

Silence.

"…You choose to be that way."

That hit deeper.

"…And sometimes," she continued,

"…you don't even realize it."

A long pause.

"…You think hurting people is the only way to protect."

Her breath shook slightly.

"…But it's not."

Jae-hyun looked at her.

"…In my world…"

A pause.

"…it is."

Their worlds—

Clashed again.

"…Then maybe I don't belong in your world," she whispered.

That sentence—

Changed everything.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Unbearable.

Jae-hyun didn't move.

Didn't react.

But something inside him—

Shifted.

"…What are you saying?"

His voice was lower now.

"…I'm saying…"

Her hands trembled slightly.

"…I need space."

The words felt sharp.

"…From me?"

"…From everything."

Silence.

"…That includes you."

That—

Was the hardest part.

Jae-hyun's eyes darkened.

"…You think leaving will make you safe?"

"…No."

Her answer was honest.

"…But staying…"

A pause.

"…is changing me."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"…And I don't know if I like who I'm becoming."

The truth—

Was painful.

For both of them.

"…You're getting stronger."

"…Or colder."

Silence.

"…There's a difference."

"…Not in my world."

Again—

That wall.

That difference.

Soo-min looked down.

"…I don't want to wake up one day and feel nothing."

Her voice softened.

"…Like you."

That—

Was too far.

Jae-hyun's expression changed instantly.

"…You think I feel nothing?"

His voice dropped.

Dangerous.

"…I didn't say that."

"You meant it."

Silence.

"…You don't understand."

"…Then explain!"

Her voice rose.

For the first time—

Not in fear.

But frustration.

"…You keep saying that!"

A step closer.

"…You keep hiding behind your world!"

Another step.

"…Behind power, behind control—"

"That's how I survive!"

His voice cut through hers.

Sharp.

Raw.

Silence fell.

"…And what about living?" she whispered.

A pause.

"…Do you even know what that feels like?"

That question—

Had no answer.

They stood there.

Breathing heavy.

Eyes locked.

Two people—

Close.

But worlds apart.

Finally—

Jae-hyun stepped back.

"…Do what you want."

His voice returned to calm.

Too calm.

"…I won't stop you."

That hurt more than anything.

Because she expected resistance.

Anger.

Control.

Not this.

Not distance.

"…I didn't ask you to."

A pause.

"…I just wanted you to understand."

Silence.

"…I do."

A long pause.

"…That's why I'm letting you go."

Her heart dropped.

Because those words—

Didn't feel like freedom.

They felt like loss.

She turned slowly.

Walked toward the door.

Each step—

Heavy.

Each breath—

Harder.

She stopped.

"…Jae-hyun."

A pause.

"…What?"

She didn't turn.

"…Thank you."

Silence.

"…For saving me."

Another pause.

"…More than once."

His eyes softened slightly.

But his voice didn't.

"…You don't need to thank me."

"…I know."

A small pause.

"…But I wanted to."

Then—

She left.

The door closed.

And just like that—

The room felt empty.

Jae-hyun stood still.

Unmoving.

Silent.

For a long time.

Then—

His hand clenched.

Tightly.

"…Damn it."

The word came out low.

Frustrated.

Not at her.

At himself.

Minutes later—

Min-jun walked in.

"…So she left."

No response.

"…You really let her go."

Still nothing.

Min-jun sighed.

"…You're losing your edge."

Silence.

"…Or maybe…"

He looked at Jae-hyun carefully.

"…you're finally becoming human."

That—

Didn't sound like an insult.

"…Track her," Jae-hyun said quietly.

Min-jun raised an eyebrow.

"…I thought you were letting her go."

"…I am."

A pause.

"…But I'm not letting her die."

Far away—

Soo-min walked alone.

Back into the world she came from.

Small streets.

Simple life.

But everything felt different now.

She wasn't the same girl anymore.

She could feel it.

In her thoughts.

In her reactions.

In the way she looked at the world.

"…I hate this," she whispered.

Because no matter how far she walked—

She couldn't leave it behind.

She couldn't leave him behind.

From a distance—

A car followed slowly.

Hidden.

Watching.

Protecting.

But not everything watching her—

Was there to protect.

A figure stood in the shadows.

Phone in hand.

"…She's alone now."

A pause.

"…Yes."

A small smile appeared.

"…Perfect."

The distance between them—

Was no longer just emotional.

It was dangerous.

Because now—

Soo-min stood alone.

Without protection.

Without control.

Without him.

And the world they were trying to escape—

Wasn't done with them yet.
