Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: Awakening.

The world erupted in chaos. Across distant kingdoms, mountains buried beneath the earth's surface fissured and split apart. Ancient oceans trembled with the disturbance.

Forests ignited with an otherworldly silver fire as colossal shadows emerged from beneath the terrain, sequentially awakening. Titans were mobilising globally.

Within Aerindor, citizens collapsed in terror as the corrupted Titan howled toward the storm-laden sky. The loud sound conveyed agony, not rage.

Lyra gazed upward, her chest tightening as the Core pulsed violently beneath the surface once more. Every awakened individual in the city felt the resonance. The synchronisation was accelerating. Some individuals screamed as their powers spiralled uncontrolled; others fainted immediately. Far away, entire cities were likely experiencing destruction.

Kael seized Lyra's shoulder firmly and instructed, "We must move." The corrupted Titan shattered multiple golden chains of Caelum with a single violent movement, sending energy waves through the city akin to an earthquake. Buildings instantly collapsed.

Rylan swiftly caught two civilians from falling debris, shouting, "Seriously? Why is each day becoming worse?" Despite the chaos, he continued to move and save lives, exemplifying resilience, which reminded Lyra of humanity's capacity to survive.

Caelum floated above the battlefield, his golden energy swirling intensely, appearing strained an unprecedented sight since their encounter. The Titan's corruption was spreading rapidly, with red fractures disseminating across its form before it slammed both fists into the streets.

Its voice echoed within Lyra's mind, weak and breaking, announcing, "The Core… is dying…" Her eyes widened, recognising the distinction: it was not corrupted but dying.

Selene appeared beside her immediately, confirming her thoughts, "You heard it too." Lyra nodded slowly, understanding: "The system is collapsing." Selene's expression darkened as she replied, "If the Core fails, then every awakened individual connected to it will perish too."

The silence was profound and oppressive. Rylan ceased joking; Kael's expression hardened, realising the potential scale millions could be lost.

A sudden flash on Lyra's wrist indicated a critical development.

The display read:

PRIMARY HOST CANDIDATE DETECTED.

She furrowed her brow, questioning, "What does that mean?" Nobody responded immediately, heightening her anxiety. Finally, Selene whispered, "The system is attempting to select a replacement."

The atmosphere grew tense as Lyra regarded her with concern. "A replacement for what?" she inquired.

Selene's silver eyes flickered with apprehension as she explained, "The Core." The realisation dawned on everyone simultaneously. Rylan looked at Lyra with alarm, commenting, "That is extraordinarily dangerous." Kael immediately positioned himself protectively in front of her. Selene's tone was sombre. "Do you think the system considers our desires?" The corrupted Titan roared again, further destabilising. Red energy exploded from its chest, destroying nearby structures.

Caelum responded instantly, shielding civilians with golden barriers. The strain was evident; blood seeped from his mouth.

Lyra observed, noting Caelum's struggle. Suddenly, the Titan ceased attacking, its glowing eyes fixed on Caelum, then on Lyra, as if trying to choose. The voice within Lyra's mind grew stronger, instructing, "One must carry a balance."

Images flooded her consciousness ancient guardians merging with the Core, humanity fading, emotions diminishing over time, becoming less human, more system. The final vision was heart-wrenching: a solitary figure beside the Core for thousands of years, witnessing the rise and fall of civilisations.

Selene grasped Lyra to prevent her collapse, asking, "What did you see?"

Lyra's breathing was irregular. "The Core consumes people," she replied. Silence ensued. Caelum heard her and narrowed his golden eyes in suspicion. Then Lyra comprehended the terrifying truth: his desire for evolution was driven by awareness of what lay in store for the system's next prison.

The Titan convulsed violently; red fractures spread rapidly across its body, too quickly for control. The stranger looked upward, warning, "It is going critical." Rylan requested clarification, "Define critical."

The Titan opened its mouth, forming an unstable sphere of red energy inside massive and catastrophic. Selene's face paled as she warned, "If it explodes. " Kael finished grimly, "Aerindor will cease to exist."

Panic re-emerged through the city. People screamed, fled, and prayed. Caelum made a final decision; he flew directly toward the Titan's core, unleashing golden energy. Selene watched in alarm, realising he intended to absorb the corruption himself. Lyra moved instantly, protesting, "That will kill him!"

The stranger confirmed coldly, "Probably." Nonetheless, Caelum pressed on, willing to sacrifice himself to save the city. Lyra stared in shock, recognising that this act of evolution once thought impersonal was driven by a desire to protect.

The Titan's gaze locked onto Lyra, its ancient voice echoing, "Balance bearer..."

The red energy sphere expanded violently. Lyra's balance mark was shattered, and a new number appeared on her wrist:

100.
