In her office, Evelyn swept a stack of folders off her desk in a fit of rage. The papers fluttered to the floor like dying birds.
"Ordinary friends?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "He can actually lie like that for her?"
Her heart felt as though it were being squeezed by a cold hand. She didn't want a promotion. She didn't want to be "Acting President." She certainly didn't want him to marry the woman who had caused her so much pain, the woman who had taken so much from her.
The phone rang, jolting her out of her grief. It was Gabriel Muller.
"I saw the news, Evelyn..." his voice was filled with a sadness that mirrored her own.
Evelyn lay her head on her desk, staring at the scattered papers on the floor. "I saw it too, Gabriel," she said, her voice hollow. "From now on, he's just a stranger passing by in my life."
