The next morning, Vee woke to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. It was the kind of sound that was soothing, like a lullaby for the soul. She stretched and glanced out the window, her heart still heavy from the events of the night before. Rui's presence lingered in the back of her mind like an uninvited guest, someone she couldn't quite ignore, no matter how hard she tried.
Brie had already left for the day. She had a shift at the clinic, and Vee had a few hours to herself before they'd be meeting up again. She stood by the window for a while, just looking at the ocean, her thoughts a whirlwind.
She tried to focus on her vacation, the reason she came here in the first place: to escape, to recharge. But it felt impossible to shake off the tension from last night. The way Rui had looked at her, his eyes intense yet guarded gaze. There was something there, but what? She couldn't tell if it was something she should worry about or something she should lean into.
The distant hum of the house's air conditioning broke her reverie, and she turned to see Brie walking in, fresh from her shift.
"Morning, sleepyhead," Brie called with a grin, tossing her bag on the couch.
"Morning," Vee replied softly, giving her a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Brie raised an eyebrow as she took a seat beside Vee. "What's with the look? Something on your mind?"
Vee sighed, glancing out the window again. "I don't know. Last night, everything felt... off." She paused, unsure how to explain what she was feeling. "I just Rui, he's... he's different."
Brie chuckled lightly, but Vee didn't find it funny. "You know, he's not the same guy he was when we were kids," Brie said, her tone softening. "He's a little more complicated, but that's just how things are, right?"
"Complicated?" Vee echoed, her brows furrowing. "You know I don't like complications."
Brie gave her a sidelong glance, knowing her friend too well. "Yeah, but sometimes, the best things come with a little bit of complication, don't you think?"
Vee wasn't sure what to make of that. "Are you saying I should just go with it?"
Brie shrugged, her expression turning serious. "I'm not saying you should do anything. But you've known me long enough to know when something's worth the risk. And when it's not."
There was a long pause. Vee turned away, looking out at the ocean again, her mind a tangled mess of thoughts. She had never been one to dive headfirst into something uncertain, especially not with someone like Rui. But there was an undeniable pull, a magnetic force that seemed to draw her in. And yet, everything about him screamed danger.
Before she could answer, there was a knock at the door. Brie stood up and went to answer it, and a moment later, she called out, "Vee, you've got a visitor."
Vee's heart skipped a beat as she stood up and walked toward the door. It could only be one person.
Rui stood there, holding a small bag in his hand. He gave her a small, knowing smile, but his eyes were serious. "Morning," he said. "I thought I'd drop by and make sure you were settled in."
Vee forced a smile, trying to act normal. "I'm fine, thank you." She stepped aside to let him in.
Brie, sensing the tension between them, quickly excused herself, leaving them alone.
Rui set the bag down on the table and looked at Vee with a quiet intensity. "I know this is all... sudden. I didn't mean to make things uncomfortable last night."
Vee shifted uncomfortably, crossing her arms. "You didn't. It's just... I don't know what to think. I don't like feeling like I'm being pulled in two directions."
Rui stepped closer, his eyes softening. "I didn't mean to pull you anywhere. It's just that... there's something between us, and I can't ignore it."
Vee's breath hitched in her throat. There it was again the unspoken tension between them, thick and undeniable.
"I don't know what to say," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're... you're different from what I expected."
Rui smiled faintly. "Good or bad?"
"Neither. Just... unexpected," Vee said, her voice wavering slightly.
Rui nodded, his gaze lingering on her. "I get that. But whatever this is, whatever we're both feeling, we can take it slow. No pressure. No expectations."
Vee wasn't sure if she believed him, but for some reason, his sincerity made her want to. Still, a part of her hesitated, unsure of what this connection could mean. She had never been one for complications, and yet, it seemed as though Rui was walking right into her life, ready or not.
"Thank you," she said softly. "For giving me space."
Rui stepped back, giving her room. "No problem. But just know this whatever happens, I'm here. And I'm not going anywhere."
Vee's heart fluttered at his words, but she couldn't help but wonder: Was she ready for this? Could she truly allow herself to be pulled into the tide of something so complicated? Or was it just a fleeting moment that would fade like the waves on the shore?
As Rui left, Vee stood at the door, staring out at the waves once again. Her heart was heavy with uncertainty, but beneath it all, there was a flicker of hope. A hope that maybe, just maybe, this unexpected connection could be something worth fighting for.
