Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Relationship Consent Agreement

Meanwhile, Tanja turned her attention fully to Harper, then she turned to her computer monitor and pulls up a separate document on the screen. "And for you Mrs. Miller, we will need to discuss your specific role within the company structure. Since Mr. Williams holds a supervisory position over your department, this requires additional oversight." Her tone remained strictly professional, but there was an undercurrent of curiosity as she studies Harpers file on her computer monitor. "Your performance evaluations will now be conducted jointly by myself and another impartial member of staff."

Oliver took out a silver high-end ballpoint pen from his jacket pocket and he took a step closer to Tanja's desk and leaned down to sign the relationship agreement. "Of course, I understand," Harper said professionally. Tanja watched as Oliver signed the form with crisp efficiency, a flicker of approval crossing her features. "Excellent, Mr. Williams. Professionalism in all matters, even personal ones." Turning her attention back to Harper, Tanja adjusted her glasses with a practiced motion. "Now, Mrs. Miller, let's address your role in this arrangement. Your position as Mr. Williams secretary places you under Mr. Williams' direct supervision. Company policy dictates that romantic partners cannot have direct reporting lines." Tanja pauses, tapping a perfectly manicured nail against her monitor. "To maintain transparency and fairness, I propose transferring your immediate supervisor duties to our head of Advertising effective tomorrow morning. How does that sound?" before waiting for Harpers full response, Tanja continued seamlessly. "Additionally, both of you will be required to attend bi-weekly check-ins with me to discuss any potential conflicts arising from your relationship status."

Harper looked towards Oliver. "I don't have a problem with a transfer," she said softly. Oliver's pen stilled mid-signature as he processed the implications of Tanja's proposal. Transferring her direct supervision would create distance between them professionally, which might actually simplify certain situations but also introduced new complexities. "Transfer to advertising would mean working primarily with Marius Zane," he mused aloud, considering the practicalities. "He is fair but demanding– you would have more autonomy but also higher-pressure performance metrics." His blue eyes met Harpers, searching for any hesitation or uncertainty in her soft-spoken acceptance. The last thing he wanted was for this relationship to cause stress or resentment in her career development. "If that is what it takes to keep things clean legally," Oliver decided after a moment of contemplation. "Then fine. But I want it noted officially that this was initiated by HR policy rather than any perceived inadequacy in your current role."

Harper smiled lightly and nodded. "Can I use you pen?" she asked Oliver and flipped the relationship agreement to the part when she has to sign and sat down on one of the chairs. Tanja raises an eyebrow at the way Harper casually requests to use Olivers pen, a rare crack in her professional armour appearing as she suppressed a smile. "Of course, here," Oliver said casually and handed his pen over to Harper, watching with mild amusement as she took it. The gesture felt strangely domestic amidst the sterile office environment– a small moment of normalcy in what was otherwise a formal business transaction. Seeing her handle the situation with such easy confidence reassured him that this wouldn't be a source of constant tension between them. "The transfer won't impact your salary or benefits package," Tanja added efficiently, already typing notes onto her computer. "Mr. Zane values good secretaries, so I anticipate a smooth transition. You will report directly to him starting tomorrow morning." She glanced between Oliver and Harper, her analytical gaze noting the subtle shift in their dynamic now that official channels had been established.

Harper nods at Tanja's words and signed the relationship agreement with Oliver's pen. Sarah accepted the signed form from Harper with a brisk nod, her professional demeanour returning fully as she reviewed Harper's signature alongside Oliver's. "Excellent, both parties have acknowledged and agreed to company policy regarding interpersonal relationships." Tanja filled the papers neatly into her personnel folders, her movements precise and efficient. "Now that formal documentation is completely, we can proceed with next steps." Oliver shifted as he stood beside Harper's seated form, clearly eager to wrap up the bureaucratic portion of their afternoon. "What are the next steps? Do we need to schedule those bi-weekly check-ins immediately?" Tanja consulted the planned on her desk. "Yes, I will black off thirty-minute slots every other Tuesday at three PM for your joint progress reviews. I will send invitations via email later today." Standing up from her desk, Tanja smoothed down her red shirt and offered a small smile that didn't quite reach her green eyes.

"Congratulations on your official recognition as a company-approved couple," Tanja announced with a mock solemnity. "Try not to make it awkward for the rest of us in the break room." Her attempt at humour fell slightly flat as she moved toward the door, signalling the end of their meeting. "I expect both of you to conduct yourself with absolute professionalism outside of these reviews. Any complaints regarding favouritism or inappropriate behaviour will be taken extremely seriously." Harper rose to her feet smoothly, and Oliver placed a protective hand on the small of her back as he guided her toward the exit. "Understood, Tanja. We appreciate your thoroughness in handling this matter." Harper and Oliver stepped out of Tanja's cubicle and walked back the way they came. The sounds of office life resumed around them– distant ringing phones, keyboard clicking, water cooler chatter. The weight of official acknowledgment settled over them both. "So," Oliver said quietly once they were a safe distance from Tanja's office. "That was less painful than expected."

"Right? I thought it was just me," Harper said slightly surprised. "I thought she liked using visual aids and giving long speeches, but that was fairly straightforward." Oliver let out a short laugh, the sound echoing softly in the quieter corridor leading back toward their offices. "Maybe she has been practicing efficiency techniques. Or perhaps having two high-level executives openly declare romantic intentions put her off balance enough to skip the usual lecture". His hand moved from her back to hold her hand again.
