Chapter 222 - Chapter 222

The water did not form a wave.

It lifted as one immense mass, as though the ocean floor itself had decided to surface.

Law was already moving before the shape beneath the water became visible.

"Everyone aboard who can fit. Bepo, start the engines and take the Polar Tang into deeper water. Shachi, release the wreck from the tow lines before it drags us under."

The Heart Pirates responded immediately.

Ropes were cut, tools abandoned, and hatches sealed while the submarine's propellers churned the shallows into white foam.

Dorry and Brogy turned toward the western sea.

The first thing to break the surface was a curved ridge layered with moss, coral, and centuries of hardened marine growth.

It continued rising until the ridge became part of an enormous head, followed by a mouth large enough to swallow a warship without slowing down.

Brogy's face changed.

"The Island Eater."

Dorry tightened both hands around his temporary sword.

"It hasn't approached this close in decades."

Law reached the beach beside Zaraki and expanded ROOM across the shallows.

The blue sphere caught the Polar Tang, the half-repaired giant ship, and several marked stones farther offshore.

"You've seen it before?"

"Several times during our century here," Dorry said. "When our weapons were whole, Hakoku Sovereignty was enough to turn it away. It would disappear into the deep sea and return years later."

Brogy looked at the ironwood axe in his hands.

"These practice weapons may survive one combined attack."

"May?" Law repeated.

"They may also explode."

"That is the answer I expected and still did not want."

The Island Eater opened its mouth.

Water poured between its teeth like rivers.

The current created by that single movement pulled at the shallows, dragging broken trees, loose stones, and sections of reef toward the creature. The half-repaired longship shifted across the sand.

Law snapped his fingers.

"Shambles."

The Polar Tang and the exposed frame of the giant vessel vanished from the current and reappeared behind the eastern reef, exchanged with marked boulders.

The enormous displacement strained Law's ROOM hard enough to tighten the veins at his temple, but both vessels were removed from the immediate path of the creature's mouth.

Bepo's voice came through the Polar Tang's loudspeaker.

"Captain, sonar says it's still rising! The body extends far below the shelf!"

"I can see that."

Law lowered his hand and looked toward Zaraki, who had not moved from the beach.

"No."

Zaraki glanced sideways.

"I haven't said anything."

"You have the expression you wear immediately before doing something that creates additional patients."

"The timing is useful."

"The island-sized carnivorous fish is not a training device."

"It is now."

Dorry and Brogy stepped forward together, temporary weapons raised.

"If our ship is going to sail again," Dorry said, "we will not let that creature swallow it before it reaches the water."

Brogy planted his feet beside him.

"And if these weapons break, we'll make better ones from its bones."

Zaraki laughed.

"That's the first sensible thing either of you has said."

Law caught his shoulder before he could advance.

"You told me the technique could tear your body apart. You are still carrying repaired injuries from four separate battles, and you have never tested it."

"I'm not opening the higher levels."

"You should not be opening any level while an island is being pulled into a mouth."

"That sounds like the best time to find out whether the first one works."

Law's grip tightened.

"ROOM."

A smaller sphere formed around Zaraki alone. Law's perception spread through his muscles, nerves, circulation, and the recently repaired tissue beneath his ribs.

"If your heart rhythm becomes unstable or the repairs begin to fail, I am stopping you."

"How?"

"I will remove enough blood from your legs that standing becomes optional."

Zaraki looked at him.

Law did not blink.

After a moment, Zaraki gave a rough laugh.

"Fine. Watch closely."

He did not announce the Eight Gates aloud. Dorry, Brogy, and Law knew only that he was testing an unfamiliar method of forcing his body beyond its normal output.

The name, structure, and system-granted knowledge remained his alone.

Zaraki closed his eyes for a heartbeat.

The first gate was located in the brain, where the body restrained the muscles from using their full available strength.

Opening it would not create power from nothing. It would remove part of the protection that prevented the body from damaging itself through excessive output.

The knowledge told him where to reach.

It did not make the process safe.

'First Gate: Gate of Opening.'

The limiter gave way.

No beam of green energy erupted around him. No foreign power filled the island.

The change began inside his body: nerves fired more sharply, muscles contracted beyond their usual restraint, and his pulse struck hard enough for Law to feel it through ROOM.

The sand beneath Zaraki's feet sank.

His shoulders tightened, and the old injuries across his torso pulled at once. It was not yet serious damage, but the warning was immediate and unmistakable.

Law's eyes narrowed.

"Your muscular output just jumped, but the tissue has not adapted to it. One careless movement will reopen the repairs."

Zaraki rolled his neck.

"So I shouldn't be careless."

"That is not the conclusion I wanted you to reach."

The Island Eater's mouth descended toward Little Garden.

Zaraki drew Nozarashi.

"Drink, Nozarashi."

The rough sword widened into its enormous chipped cleaver.

Dark-gold arcs crawled along the pressure gathering around the blade, visible to everyone but understood by no one except Zaraki.

Dorry and Brogy raised their temporary weapons beside him.

"What is the plan?" Dorry asked.

"You two force its head away from the island. Don't try to kill it with those toys."

Brogy looked offended.

"We made these ourselves."

"That is why I called them toys."

Law stepped between the giants and the sea, ROOM expanding until the edge reached the Island Eater's lower jaw.

"I can move the vessels and anyone caught by the current. I cannot exchange that entire creature. Its mass is beyond what I can shift safely at this range."

Zaraki adjusted his grip on Nozarashi.

"You don't need to. When it turns, move me to the left side of its mouth."

Law looked at the towering teeth, then at Zaraki.

"You intend to let it close around you."

"I intend to be gone before it does."

"That sentence would be more reassuring from someone else."

Dorry and Brogy began drawing their weapons back.

The ironwood frames groaned beneath their strength.

Metal reinforcement bands bent, and cracks appeared around the old fragments of sword and axe embedded near the edges.

The two giants inhaled together.

Their will aligned as naturally as it had during a century of duels.

"HAKOKU SOVEREIGNTY!"

The combined shockwave tore across the shallows.

It struck the Island Eater beneath the right side of its jaw, blasting away coral and hardened growth while forcing the enormous head several degrees off course.

The creature roared, its mouth turning away from the center of Little Garden.

Both temporary weapons shattered.

Dorry and Brogy were thrown backward, but their attack had created the opening Zaraki needed.

Law snapped his fingers.

"Shambles!"

Zaraki vanished from the beach and reappeared on a slab of coral near the creature's left jaw.

His body moved the instant his feet found support.

The First Gate drove more force through his legs than they were conditioned to handle.

The coral exploded beneath him as he launched himself upward, not into sustained flight but in one violent leap along the side of the Island Eater's head.

Future Sight flashed.

For a fraction of a second, he saw the creature twist, its upper teeth coming down, the path of his own slash continuing too far and cutting toward the Polar Tang behind the reef.

He changed the line before he swung.

Nozarashi came down through the exposed section behind the Island Eater's eye.

The dark-gold slash did not cross the entire island or split the sea beyond it. Zaraki compressed the force into the creature's head, cutting through the thick outer layer, bone, and the vital structure beneath.

The Island Eater's roar stopped.

Its mouth remained open for one final moment before the enormous body lost strength and fell sideways into the sea.

The impact raised a wall of water high enough to cover the eastern reef.

Law's ROOM flashed again.

The Polar Tang, the half-repaired longship, and everyone on the beach exchanged positions with marked debris farther inland.

The wave crashed over empty ground where they had been standing and swept harmlessly through the jungle channels beyond.

Zaraki landed near the edge of the fallen creature's head.

His knees bent sharply.

The First Gate closed the moment he released his hold on it, but the strain remained. Pain ran through both thighs, and the repaired muscle beneath his ribs gave a warning throb that made his breathing hitch.

Law appeared beside him in an exchange with a broken coral slab.

"Do not move."

"I'm standing."

"That counts as moving when I told you not to."

ROOM narrowed around Zaraki's body. Law examined the damage and found small tears through the leg muscles, overstressed nerves, and fresh strain around the repaired wounds.

Nothing was beyond treatment, but that was only because Zaraki had opened the first gate for less than a minute and had controlled the final attack.

Law's expression became colder with every detail he found.

"You opened the lowest level, used it once, and still damaged yourself."

Zaraki looked toward the dead Island Eater.

"It worked."

"That is the argument of a man who tests poison by drinking it."

Dorry and Brogy approached through the ruined jungle, both staring at the enormous creature with open excitement.

Brogy laughed.

"Gababababa! Your movement changed completely! You crossed its head before it could close its mouth!"

Dorry nodded, though his gaze shifted toward the blood beginning to seep beneath Zaraki's bandages.

"And it injured you."

Zaraki rested Nozarashi against his shoulder.

"That is why neither of you is learning it yet."

The giants' enthusiasm dimmed.

Brogy opened his mouth to protest, but Zaraki cut him off.

"I don't know whether a giant's body has the same limits, whether opening them would work the same way, or whether your hearts would survive the strain. I'm not wasting two useful candidates because you heard the word 'stronger' and stopped thinking."

Law gave him a sidelong look.

"That may be the most responsible statement I have heard from you."

"Don't get used to it."

The Island Eater's body rolled in the shallows, its vast hide and bones rising above the surface like a new reef.

Dorry examined it.

"You said we needed stronger material for the ship."

Brogy's grin returned.

"And new weapons."

Law followed their gazes toward the carcass and understood what they were thinking.

"No one is attaching untreated sea-monster bones to a hull until my crew has checked whether they will rot."

Zaraki looked at him.

"You wanted materials."

"I wanted timber and metal, not an island-sized corpse."

Bepo's voice came through the loudspeaker from behind the eastern reef.

"Captain, the sonar says it's definitely dead!"

Law closed his eyes.

"Thank you, Bepo."

"You're welcome!"

The giants' laughter rolled across Little Garden as they began discussing how much of the Island Eater could be used for the ship, the sails, and their replacement weapons.

Zaraki listened with half an ear while Nozarashi returned to its sealed form.

The test had answered one question.

The Eight Gates worked in his body.

It had also proved the system's warning was not exaggerated.

Knowledge alone did not grant adaptation, and even the First Gate could become dangerous if he treated it like another free source of strength.

Somewhere beyond the western horizon, the distant presence continued drawing closer.
