Chapter 2 - 2

The night didn't feel the same anymore.

It hadn't changed.

The same quiet winds brushed against the window. The same distant sounds echoed through Elden Hollow. The same calm stillness wrapped around the village like a blanket.

But inside Aarav—

Everything was different.

He hadn't slept.

Not even for a moment.

The map lay on the table in front of him, its faint golden glow pulsing slowly, like a heartbeat that refused to fade.

Real.

That single word just kept echoing in his mind.

Not a dream.

Not imagination.

Not hope.

Real.

Aarav leaned forward, putting his elbows on his knees, and stared at the map.

"…What are you?" he whispered.

The map didn't respond.

But the glow shifted slightly.

Almost like it had heard him.

He reached out again.

This time, without hesitation.

His fingers brushed the surface.

The light reacted instantly.

The lines across the map brightened, stretching and shifting like living veins of gold. A path began to form—clearer than before—moving outward from a single point.

From here.

From his home.

Aarav's breath caught.

"It's… showing a route."

The line extended beyond the village.

Beyond the hills.

Toward the forest.

Aarav's chest tightened.

"The forest…"

Everyone in Elden Hollow knew about it.

And everyone avoided it.

Not because of stories.

Not because of rumors.

Because people who went too far in—

Didn't always come back.

Aarav leaned back slightly.

His mind racing.

"This is insane," he muttered.

But even as doubt crept in—

Something stronger pushed back.

Curiosity.

The same feeling that had always been there.

The same one Dev had warned him about.

Aarav stood abruptly.

Pacing the room.

"Okay… think," he said to himself.

"This could be dangerous."

He paused.

"…It is dangerous."

He ran a hand through his hair.

Frustrated.

"But what if it's real?" he said quietly.

The question lingered.

Heavy.

What if this wasn't just a map?

What if it was a chance?

Aarav stopped pacing.

Looked back at the table.

At the map.

Still glowing.

Still waiting.

"…You chose me," he said softly.

Silence answered.

But somehow—

It didn't feel empty.

Morning came slowly.

Golden light filled the room as the sun rose over the hills. The village began to stir, life returning to its usual rhythm.

But Aarav hadn't moved.

He stood by the window now, looking out at the familiar view.

The same houses.

The same paths.

The same life.

And for the first time—

It felt smaller than ever.

"Aarav!"

The voice came from outside.

He turned.

Dev.

Of course.

Aarav hesitated for a moment.

He hastily grabbed the map, folded it up, and slipped it into his bag.

He stepped outside.

Trying to act normal.

"You look terrible," Dev said immediately.

Aarav blinked. " Good morning to you too."

Dev crossed his arms. " You didn't sleep."

"Observant," Aarav replied.

Dev studied him more closely.

"…Something's wrong."

Aarav forced a small smile.

"Nothing's wrong."

Dev didn't buy it.

He never did.

Dev said, "You're thinking about leaving again, aren't you?"

Aarav froze for a split second.

Just enough.

Dev sighed. " I knew it."

"It's not like that," Aarav said quickly.

"Then what is it like?" Dev asked.

Aarav hesitated.

His mind racing.

He couldn't tell him.

Not yet.

Aarav said he needed some time to think, to clear his head and get his thoughts together.

Dev frowned.

You always say that right before you do something stupid.

Aarav smirked slightly. " That's not fair."

"It's accurate," Dev replied.

A brief silence passed between them.

Then Dev said quietly—

"…Just don't disappear."

The words hit harder than Aarav expected.

"I won't," Aarav said.

But even as he said it—

He wasn't sure it was true.

The forest stood at the edge of the world.

Or at least—

That's what it felt like.

Aarav stood before it now.

His bag slung over his shoulder.

The map tucked safely inside.

Up close, the forest felt different.

Larger.

Darker.

More… alive.

The trees towered above him, their branches twisting together to block out the sky. Shadows stretched between them, deep and unwelcoming.

Aarav took a slow breath.

"This is it," he whispered.

For a moment—

Doubt returned.

He could still turn back.

Still go home.

Still forget about all of this.

But then—

He felt it.

The map.

A faint warmth from inside his bag.

A pull.

Calling him forward.

Aarav closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

"…Okay."

And with that—

He stepped into the forest.

The light behind him faded instantly.

And just like that—

There was no going back.

The forest swallowed sound.

Every step Aarav took felt louder than it should have been. Leaves crunched beneath his feet, branches shifted slightly, and somewhere far off, something moved.

He tightened his grip on his bag.

"Stay calm," he muttered.

But calm wasn't easy here.

The deeper he walked—

The quieter everything became.

Until—

Even his own breathing sounded too loud.

Aarav stopped suddenly.

"…Hello?"

No answer.

Of course not.

He shook his head slightly.

"Great start," he muttered.

Then—

The map reacted.

A bright flash of light suddenly came out of his bag.

Aarav quickly pulled it out.

The glowing path had changed.

It wasn't just pointing forward anymore.

It was guiding him.

Step by step.

Aarav stared at it.

"…You're serious."

The path shifted again.

Waiting.

Aarav looked ahead.

Into the unknown.

Then—

He smiled slightly.

Not out of confidence.

But because—

For the first time—

He felt like he was exactly where he was meant to be.

And somewhere deep within the forest—

Unseen.

Unknown.

Something was already watching him.
