Chapter 36 - Chapter 35: The first kiss

Sofia stared at her phone for a moment after sending Lucy her reply.

Her message had been simple.

Still at work.

Nothing more.

Nothing that revealed the truth about what had just happened.

Because even Sofia herself was still trying to process it.

Leo Rivera had just confessed that she mattered to him.

Not as an employee.

Not as a secretary.

But as something more.

And she had said yes to exploring where it could lead.

She slowly set her phone back down on the desk.

Leo was still standing only a few steps away, watching her quietly.

The expression on his face had changed slightly since the confession.

He looked lighter.

Less guarded.

Almost… relieved.

Sofia let out a small breath.

"Well," she said softly.

"Well," Leo repeated.

Neither of them moved at first.

The office was quiet, most of the building already empty for the night. The hallway lights had dimmed slightly, leaving only the soft glow from desk lamps and office lights.

The moment felt strangely private.

Almost fragile.

Sofia finally looked up at him again.

"You realize Lucy is going to interrogate me tomorrow."

Leo raised an eyebrow.

"I look forward to meeting the woman who has apparently been predicting this entire situation."

Sofia laughed softly.

"Oh, she absolutely has."

She leaned lightly against the edge of her desk.

"She's been convinced for weeks that you were secretly in love with me."

Leo crossed his arms thoughtfully.

"That's impressive."

Sofia tilted her head.

"Why?"

"Because I was still trying to convince myself that I wasn't."

The honesty in his voice made her heart skip.

She looked down for a second before meeting his eyes again.

"This is still a little crazy."

Leo nodded.

"I know."

"You're my boss."

"Yes."

"And we work together every single day."

Leo stepped slightly closer.

"That part I'm not worried about."

Sofia raised an eyebrow.

"You're not?"

"No."

"Why?"

Leo's voice lowered.

"Because I trust you."

Her heart warmed slightly.

"That's a dangerous level of confidence."

Leo shook his head.

"No."

He paused.

"It's just the truth."

Sofia didn't know what to say to that.

Instead, she simply studied him for a moment.

For months she had seen him only as the powerful CEO of Rivera Group. The man who commanded boardrooms, signed major deals, and intimidated half the executives in the building.

But tonight, standing here after hours, he felt different.

More human.

More open.

She smiled softly.

"You're not as cold as everyone thinks."

Leo almost laughed.

"I've heard that reputation."

Sofia folded her arms lightly.

"To be fair, you do walk around the office looking like you're about to fire someone."

Leo shook his head.

"That's just my thinking face."

Sofia laughed.

"Your thinking face is terrifying."

Leo's lips curved slightly.

"I'll try to work on that."

Another quiet pause followed.

But this time, the silence felt different.

Comfortable.

Warm.

Leo glanced briefly around the nearly empty office floor.

"Everyone's gone."

Sofia nodded.

"Almost."

Then she added quietly,

"Except us."

Leo looked back at her.

Something in the air shifted.

The playful conversation slowly faded into something deeper.

More intense.

He took another small step closer.

Sofia felt her pulse quicken.

They were standing much closer now than they usually would during work hours.

Close enough that she could notice small details she had never paid attention to before.

The faint scent of his cologne.

The way his dark eyes softened when he looked at her.

The tension in his shoulders that seemed to relax slightly when she smiled.

Leo spoke quietly.

"You're nervous again."

Sofia gave a small laugh.

"A little."

"Why?"

"Because this is new."

Leo nodded slowly.

"For me too."

That surprised her.

"For you?"

"Yes."

"You've never… dated someone from work before?"

Leo shook his head.

"Never."

Sofia studied him carefully.

"So this is a first for both of us."

"Yes."

She smiled faintly.

"That's oddly comforting."

Leo chuckled softly.

"I'm glad."

The moment stretched between them.

Neither of them seemed in a hurry to move away.

Sofia's voice softened.

"Leo?"

"Yes?"

"When you said earlier that I make work feel different…"

"Yes."

"Did you mean that?"

Leo didn't hesitate.

"Completely."

Her heart fluttered.

"And when you said you look forward to coming to work because of me?"

"Yes."

"That too?"

"Yes."

Sofia felt warmth rise to her cheeks.

"You're very direct tonight."

Leo's gaze remained steady.

"I'm trying something new."

"What's that?"

"Honesty."

Sofia smiled softly.

"I like it."

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Then Leo asked quietly,

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Why did you say yes earlier?"

Sofia blinked.

"To what?"

"To seeing where this goes."

She thought about the question carefully.

Then answered honestly.

"Because every time you walk into the room… I notice."

Leo's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"You notice?"

"Yes."

She laughed softly.

"You have this presence that's hard to ignore."

Leo tilted his head slightly.

"Is that a compliment?"

Sofia smiled.

"It is."

Then she added quietly,

"And because when you talk to me, you're different than you are with everyone else."

Leo looked curious.

"How?"

"You listen."

Her answer surprised him.

"You think I don't listen to other people?"

Sofia smiled knowingly.

"You listen to their reports."

Leo almost laughed.

"But with me," she continued softly, "you actually care about the conversation."

Leo's expression softened.

"That's because the conversation matters."

The words lingered between them.

Sofia felt her heart beating faster again.

They were standing very close now.

Closer than either of them had realized.

Leo looked down slightly at her.

"Sofia."

"Yes?"

"Can I do something?"

Her breath caught.

"What?"

Leo hesitated for the briefest moment.

Then said quietly,

"I've been wanting to do it for a while."

Her pulse jumped.

"And what is that?"

Leo didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly lifted one hand and gently brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.

The touch was light.

Careful.

But it sent a small shiver through her.

Sofia looked up at him.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

And then, slowly, Leo leaned closer.

Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath.

He paused.

Giving her time to pull away.

But she didn't.

Her eyes softened slightly.

That was all the answer he needed.

Leo leaned in the rest of the way.

And their lips finally met.

The kiss was soft.

Slow.

Careful.

Not rushed.

Not overwhelming.

Just a quiet moment that had been building between them for weeks.

Sofia's hand lightly gripped the edge of the desk as her heart raced.

Leo's hand rested gently at her waist.

The world outside the office seemed to disappear completely.

After a moment, they slowly pulled apart.

Sofia blinked slightly, still processing what had just happened.

Leo looked at her carefully.

"Was that okay?"

Sofia let out a soft laugh.

"Yes."

She shook her head slightly.

"That was definitely okay."

Leo smiled faintly.

"Good."

Sofia looked up at him again, her cheeks still warm.

"Well…"

"Yes?"

Lucy's going to lose her mind tomorrow."

Leo laughed quietly.

And for the first time since they met, neither of them tried to pretend that what was happening between them was just work anymore.
