Chapter 27 - Chapter 26:The Ride Home

The anniversary celebration slowly began to wind down.

The lively music that had filled the ballroom earlier in the night softened into gentle background melodies. Groups of employees were beginning to say their goodbyes, laughter echoing softly as coats were gathered and phones were checked for late-night messages.

Sofia Mirano stood near the exit with Lucy Hemming, who was dramatically slipping off her heels.

"I swear," Lucy groaned, holding the shoes in one hand, "fashion should never involve this much suffering."

Sofia laughed quietly.

"You're the one who designed those."

Lucy pointed a finger at her.

"Yes, but designing them and wearing them are two completely different experiences."

Sofia shook her head with amusement.

Lucy studied her friend for a moment before lowering her voice.

"So… are you going home alone?"

Sofia blinked.

"What kind of question is that?"

Lucy tilted her head toward the lobby entrance where Leo Rivera was speaking with a group of executives.

"That kind."

Sofia sighed softly.

"Lucy."

Lucy crossed her arms.

"You spent half the night with him."

"He's my boss."

Lucy gave her a look.

"Yes. A boss who danced with you, followed you to the balcony, and stared at you like you were the only person in the room."

Sofia felt heat rise to her cheeks.

"You're exaggerating."

Lucy grinned.

"I rarely exaggerate."

"Lucy."

"Fine," Lucy sighed dramatically. "But if he offers to drive you home, say yes."

Sofia raised an eyebrow.

"And why would he do that?"

Lucy smiled slowly.

"Because he wants to."

Before Sofia could respond, a calm voice spoke behind them.

"Sofia."

Both women turned.

Leo stood there, his suit jacket draped neatly over one arm. Even after a long evening, he looked perfectly composed, his dark hair slightly tousled but his expression as steady as ever.

Lucy's eyes sparkled.

"Speak of the CEO."

Leo nodded politely toward her.

"Miss Hemming."

Lucy waved casually.

"Leo."

Sofia coughed lightly.

"Lucy."

Lucy pretended innocence.

"What?"

Leo turned his attention to Sofia.

"Are you heading home now?"

"Yes."

Leo glanced toward the hotel entrance.

"I can drive you."

Lucy's grin widened instantly.

Sofia shot her a warning look before turning back to Leo.

"You don't have to do that."

Leo replied calmly.

"It's late."

Sofia hesitated.

Lucy suddenly spoke.

"I think that's a wonderful idea."

Sofia stared at her.

Lucy shrugged.

"What? Safety first."

Leo looked between them, slightly amused.

Sofia sighed.

"Lucy, you're impossible."

Lucy smiled sweetly.

"I know."

She slipped her heels back on and grabbed her purse.

"Well, I'm leaving before I become the third wheel in this scene."

Sofia shook her head.

"Goodnight, Lucy."

Lucy hugged her quickly.

"Text me when you get home."

Then she leaned close and whispered,

"Enjoy the ride."

Sofia groaned softly.

Lucy waved dramatically at Leo.

"Goodnight, CEO."

Then she disappeared toward the elevators.

Outside the hotel, the night air felt cool and refreshing.

The city streets glowed with streetlights and the occasional passing car. A quiet calm had settled over the area now that the party had ended.

Leo led Sofia toward the sleek black car waiting near the entrance.

The driver opened the back door.

Leo shook his head.

"I'll drive."

The driver nodded and stepped aside.

Sofia blinked slightly.

"You're driving?"

Leo opened the passenger door for her.

"Yes."

Sofia hesitated for a second before sliding into the seat.

The car smelled faintly of leather and something subtle—clean, calm, almost like cedarwood.

Leo walked around the car and got into the driver's seat.

For a moment, neither of them spoke as he started the engine and pulled onto the quiet road.

The city lights passed outside the windows in soft golden streaks.

Sofia looked out at them, trying to steady the strange flutter in her chest.

The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable.

But it was… noticeable.

After a few minutes, Leo spoke.

"You handled tonight well."

Sofia glanced at him.

"The party?"

"The rumors."

Sofia smiled faintly.

"I didn't do anything special."

Leo kept his eyes on the road.

"You stayed calm."

Sofia shrugged lightly.

"People like stories."

Leo's voice lowered slightly.

"I don't want those stories to affect you."

Sofia looked at him.

"They won't."

Leo was quiet for a moment.

Then he asked,

"Are you sure?"

Sofia nodded.

"Yes."

The car stopped at a red light.

Leo glanced toward her.

The soft glow of the streetlights illuminated her face.

"You're very composed," he said.

Sofia smiled.

"I have practice."

The light turned green and the car moved again.

After another moment of silence, Sofia spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

Leo nodded.

"Of course."

"Why did you really drive me home?"

Leo didn't answer immediately.

The question lingered in the quiet car.

Finally, he spoke.

"Because I wanted to."

Sofia turned toward him slightly.

"That's not a very detailed explanation."

Leo's lips curved faintly.

"I prefer simple answers."

Sofia laughed softly.

"That's very CEO of you."

Leo glanced at her briefly.

"And you?"

"What about me?"

"Why did you accept?"

Sofia hesitated.

Because she wasn't completely sure herself.

Finally she said,

"Because I trusted you."

Leo's hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel.

The simple statement carried more meaning than she realized.

Trust was not something he received easily from people.

But hearing it from her felt different.

Important.

They drove the rest of the way in a quiet that felt deeper now.

Not empty.

Just thoughtful.

When the car finally stopped in front of Sofia's apartment building, the street was calm and quiet.

Leo turned off the engine.

"We're here."

Sofia looked out the window at the familiar building entrance.

Then she turned back to him.

"Thank you for the ride."

Leo nodded.

"You're welcome."

For a moment neither of them moved to leave.

The soft glow from a nearby streetlamp filtered through the windshield, filling the car with a warm golden light.

Sofia felt her heart beating faster again.

Tonight had been… different.

The dance.

The balcony.

The quiet drive.

Something had shifted between them.

Leo seemed to feel it too.

He looked at her with a quiet intensity that made her breath catch slightly.

"Sofia."

"Yes?"

He paused.

For a brief second it looked like he was about to say something more.

Something important.

But instead he simply said,

"Get some rest."

Sofia nodded slowly.

"I will."

She opened the door and stepped out onto the sidewalk.

The cool air brushed gently against her skin.

Before closing the door, she leaned slightly toward the car.

"Goodnight, Leo."

Leo met her eyes.

"Goodnight, Sofia."

She closed the door and walked toward her building entrance.

Halfway there, she glanced back.

The car was still there.

Leo watched as she reached the door and disappeared inside.

Only then did he start the engine again.

As the car drove away into the quiet city night, one thought lingered in Leo's mind.

Tonight had started as a simple company celebration.

But it had ended with something far more complicated.

Because the longer he spent time with Sofia Mirano…

The harder it was becoming to pretend she was only his secretary.

And Leo Rivera was beginning to realize something dangerous.

He didn't want that distance anymore.
