Chapter 2 - The new secretary

Sofia Mirano's alarm went off before sunrise, but somehow she felt awake and restless all the same. Today wasn't just any day-it was her first day as the personal secretary to Leo Rivera, CEO of Rivera Group, one of the most prestigious companies in the city. She had prepared meticulously for this day: her outfit carefully chosen to appear professional yet approachable, her notepad ready, pens lined up perfectly. Every file she would bring, every document she might be asked to organize-she had rehearsed it all in her mind.

And yet, as she stared at her reflection one last time before leaving her apartment, her nerves fluttered unpredictably.

"Just breathe, Sofia. You've got this," she whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Her phone buzzed suddenly, breaking the quiet. It was Lucy, as always, checking in.

Lucy: "First day! Are you ready to slay the CEO world yet? 😎"

Sofia: "Trying... feeling nervous. He's supposed to be really intimidating."

Lucy: "Good. A little fear keeps him interesting. Just don't faint. Coffee helps."

Sofia smiled at the message. Lucy had a way of making even the most nerve-wracking moments feel lighter. With one last deep breath, she grabbed her bag and stepped out into the brisk morning air.

By 8:30 a.m., Sofia found herself standing in front of the towering glass doors of Rivera Group. The lobby gleamed with modern elegance: marble floors, minimalist décor, and a vast reception desk where two secretaries moved with effortless professionalism. She swallowed hard and approached the desk.

"Good morning," she said, her voice steady, if a little soft. "I'm Sofia Mirano. I have an appointment with Mr. Rivera."

The receptionist smiled warmly. "Ah, yes. Mr. Rivera's expecting you. Go straight to the elevator-twelfth floor. Good luck."

Sofia nodded, trying not to let her nerves show. As the elevator doors closed, she glanced at herself again in the reflective metal, straightened her blazer, and reminded herself: professional first, emotions later.

The elevator opened to the top floor, a panoramic view of the city stretching endlessly through floor-to-ceiling windows. The hum of computers and soft conversations filled the open office space. She spotted a few employees moving quietly, focused on their tasks. And then, at the end of the hall, sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, was him.

Leo Rivera.

He was everything the rumors suggested-and more. Tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored navy suit, his dark hair perfectly combed, sharp features set in a calm, almost imperious expression. His eyes-deep, calculating, and almost unreadable-glanced up from the papers in front of him as Sofia approached.

She stopped a few steps from his desk, trying to remember the polite introduction she had rehearsed.

"Good morning, Mr. Rivera. I'm Sofia Mirano, your new secretary," she said, keeping her voice steady.

Leo looked at her for a long moment. Not a smile, not a word-just observation. His dark eyes swept over her, noting the crispness of her blouse, the neatness of her hair, the professional poise she carried. Finally, he spoke.

"Miss Mirano. Take a seat." His voice was low, even, and commanding-not rude, but absolutely controlled.

Sofia slid into the chair across from him, careful not to fidget.

"You've read the employee handbook?" he asked.

"Yes, sir. Several times."

"Good. Attention to detail is essential here. I expect efficiency. Accuracy. And discretion."

"Yes, sir."

"Coffee." He waved a hand toward the small tray at the side of his desk. "Black. No sugar. No cream."

"Yes, sir." Sofia noted it silently. Black. Got it.

Leo returned to his paperwork without another word. The silence stretched, not uncomfortable, but heavy, and Sofia felt every second of it. She tried to focus on the files she had prepared, lining them neatly on the desk between them.

Her hands brushed one of his documents as she adjusted the stack, and she felt a subtle charge, almost electric, at the contact. She quickly pulled back, cheeks warming. Leo, however, didn't react. He was already scanning the next report, pen in hand, completely composed.

Her phone buzzed discreetly in her bag. A message from Lucy.

Lucy: "So... how is the CEO stare-down going? Don't tell me you're blushing already 😏"

Sofia smirked and typed a quick reply.

Sofia: "He's... intimidating. Very precise. I think I need a survival guide."

Lucy: "Step 1: Breathe. Step 2: Smile secretly. Step 3: Coffee breaks with him are mandatory."

Sofia laughed quietly. Her phone went back into her bag. She focused on the files again, trying not to let herself be distracted. But she couldn't help noticing the faint way the light from the window caught the sharp line of his jaw, the way his fingers moved confidently over the papers.

He's... different from anyone I've ever met, she thought. Not just the CEO type-they say everyone fears-but... he's... interesting.

The morning passed in a blur of introductions, schedules, and document signings. Leo gave instructions crisply, precise in his requests, rarely looking up, rarely smiling. Sofia followed each direction carefully, making mental notes and adjusting her methods. Every so often, he would glance up, catching her eyes for a fraction of a second before returning to the papers in front of him. Those moments made her pulse quicken slightly, though she didn't allow herself to dwell on them.

During lunch, she ate at her desk quietly, finishing the small salad she had packed. Her phone buzzed again-Lucy checking in.

Lucy: "Lunch alone already? Don't tell me the boss is scary enough to keep you trapped at your desk 😜"

Sofia typed back with a small grin.

Sofia: "He's... demanding, but professional. Nothing scary... yet."

Lucy: "Keep your guard up. And watch out for accidental flirtations. You know him-CEO types are dangerous 😏"

Sofia rolled her eyes but smiled. Flirtations? With him? Not likely... right?

The afternoon brought more files, more instructions, more silent observation. Leo asked her to organize a stack of contracts for review. As she handed him the first file, their hands brushed again. This time, Leo's eyes lingered-not in anger, not even surprise-but with a faint, unreadable intensity. Sofia's pulse spiked, and she looked down at the file, pretending to focus, her heart thudding loudly in her chest.

"Careful with the signature page," he said softly, almost conversationally, though his eyes never left hers.

"Yes, sir," she murmured, feeling a strange warmth spread across her cheeks.

By the end of the day, Sofia felt drained but oddly exhilarated. She had survived her first day with Leo Rivera. He had been strict, intimidating, precise-but not cruel. And, in small, fleeting moments, she had glimpsed a side of him that was... different. Softer, perhaps. More human than the legend she had heard whispered through the office corridors.

As she packed her bag, her phone buzzed again. Lucy.

Lucy: "Day one done. Tell me you didn't faint or accidentally declare your feelings yet 😏"

Sofia: "No fainting. Maybe... one tiny heart attack when he... well, you wouldn't understand."

Lucy: "Oh, I understand perfectly. Can't wait for dinner recap. Survive the CEO, and then I'll reward you with sushi."

Sofia smiled to herself, feeling a little lighter. She tucked her phone into her bag, straightened her blazer, and stepped out of the towering building into the evening air.

Today had been just the beginning.

And somehow, she knew-without fully understanding why-that this was only the first page of a story that could change everything.
