Chapter 9 - Chapter 8 — Where Love Met the Blade

The River That Witnessed Too Much

The night was clear.

A full moon hung above the horizon, its light spilling across the land in a soft, silver glow. The wind moved gently through the trees, carrying the faint rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of a sleeping kingdom.

But within the palace—

Not everyone slept.

A Departure in Silence

Princess Ye-jin moved through the dim corridor without attendants.

Her steps were quiet. Intentional.

She had changed into modest traveling clothes—simple, unadorned, designed not to draw attention. Her hair was tied back in a practical manner, not the elaborate styling reserved for court appearances.

She did not look like a princess.

And that was precisely the point.

At the stables, a guard bowed deeply without question. A horse had already been prepared—dark-coated, calm, responsive.

Ye-jin mounted without hesitation.

She glanced once toward the palace walls.

Then turned away.

An Unseen Awareness

In the northern wing of the palace, Grand Prince Seok-jin stood by a window, watching the faint movement beyond the gates.

A servant approached carefully.

"Your Highness… the Princess has left."

Seok-jin did not react immediately.

He had already known.

"Alone?" he asked.

"Yes, Your Highness. No escort."

A slow exhale passed through his lips.

"She has chosen her path… then."

A pause.

Then his tone shifted—quieter, colder.

"Ensure she does not return easily."

The servant hesitated. "Your Highness?"

Seok-jin's gaze remained fixed outward.

"There are those who believe the future should remain… predictable."

A subtle signal.

Unspoken.

Understood.

The River Beneath the Moon

The forest path was quiet.

Ye-jin rode with steady control, her eyes fixed ahead. The sound of hooves against the earth echoed softly in the stillness.

The further she went, the more the palace felt distant.

Not physically.

But in weight.

As though she had stepped out of a structure that had always defined her—and into something undefined.

Eventually, the trees began to thin.

The river came into view.

It flowed gently under the moonlight, its surface reflecting the sky like a mirror.

And there—

Standing near the bank—

Was Dae-hyun.

He had arrived before her.

As always.

A Meeting Without Ceremony

Ye-jin slowed her horse and dismounted.

No attendants. No formalities. No titles spoken aloud.

Just two people.

"You came," Dae-hyun said.

His tone was even.

Not surprised.

Not questioning.

Just acknowledging.

"Yes," Ye-jin replied.

She approached him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The river continued its quiet flow beside them.

The moonlight rested on both of them equally.

"Tonight," she said softly, "I did something I was not supposed to do."

"Which part?" he asked.

A faint pause.

"All of it."

Unspoken Truths

Dae-hyun studied her.

Not as a guard.

Not as someone fulfilling duty.

But as someone trying to understand something that had no clear rules.

"You understand the risk," he said.

"Yes."

"You chose it anyway."

"I did."

Silence followed.

Not heavy.

But significant.

Ye-jin stepped closer.

"This place… feels different from the palace."

"It is not bound by it," he replied.

She nodded.

"That is why I came."

A pause.

Then her voice lowered.

"There are things I have not said."

Dae-hyun did not interrupt.

He waited.

A Confession Beneath the Moon

Ye-jin's gaze remained steady.

Not trembling.

Not uncertain.

Just honest.

"I avoided you," she said.

"I noticed."

"I did not want to interfere with the life that is forming around us."

A brief pause.

"But that did not remove what I felt."

The wind moved gently past them.

"I tried to ignore it," she continued.

"But it remained."

She looked at him directly.

"I believe… it always will."

Dae-hyun's expression shifted—slightly.

Not outwardly emotional.

But attentive.

"You should not say things that cannot be undone," he said quietly.

"I know."

"And yet you speak them."

"Yes."

Another pause.

Ye-jin took a small step closer.

"I am not asking for permission," she said.

"I am stating a truth I can no longer deny."

Dae-hyun held her gaze.

For the first time—

He did not respond immediately.

Because something in him recognized the weight of her words.

Not as duty.

But as something personal.

Something he had not allowed himself to name.

A Moment That Should Not Exist

Ye-jin's voice softened.

"If I remain silent… I will regret it."

A quiet breath.

"And if I speak… I risk everything."

A pause.

"Then choose," Dae-hyun said.

It was not encouragement.

Not instruction.

Just reality.

Ye-jin stepped closer again.

And in that fragile space between them—

She acted.

She reached out.

And gently—

She kissed him.

It was brief.

Unassuming.

But undeniable.

The Sound That Breaks Stillness

For a moment—

The world held its breath.

Then—

A faint sound.

From the trees.

A shift in the brush.

Dae-hyun's eyes sharpened instantly.

"Step back," he said.

But it was already too late.

Figures emerged from the shadows.

Dressed in black.

Faces obscured.

Weapons drawn.

Not ordinary attackers.

Assassins.

The Fight Begins

Dae-hyun moved immediately.

His posture changed—controlled, precise, instinctive.

Steel met steel as he intercepted the first strike.

"Stay behind me," he said.

Ye-jin did not retreat far.

But she positioned herself carefully, aware.

The attackers advanced in coordinated movement.

Not chaotic.

Intentional.

Dae-hyun engaged them with efficiency—blocking, redirecting, striking only when necessary.

Each motion was measured.

Each step calculated.

But they were many.

And they were persistent.

A Critical Moment

One attacker broke through Dae-hyun's line.

Moving toward Ye-jin.

Dae-hyun reacted instantly, intercepting—but in doing so, he left a brief opening.

Another attacker seized it.

A blade slipped past his defense.

And struck Ye-jin.

The Impact

The strike landed at her side.

Not deep enough to be instantly fatal—

But enough to bring her to her knees.

"Ye-jin—!" Dae-hyun's voice cut through for the first time with urgency.

He pushed back the attackers with force, creating distance.

The assailants, realizing the situation had escalated, withdrew quickly into the darkness of the forest.

Within moments—

They were gone.

Aftermath in Silence

The river returned to stillness.

But the night had changed.

Dae-hyun rushed to Ye-jin, kneeling beside her.

"Stay with me," he said.

His voice remained controlled—

But not entirely.

Ye-jin's breathing was shallow.

Her hand reached weakly toward his sleeve.

"You… fought well," she said faintly.

"Do not speak."

For once—

The command carried urgency.

He tore part of his garment to apply pressure, his movements precise despite the situation.

"I told you…" she continued softly, "I would regret silence."

"Not now," he replied.

A pause.

Her gaze remained on him.

Even now.

"Was it… a mistake?" she asked.

Dae-hyun hesitated.

Not because he did not know.

But because the answer carried weight he had never allowed himself to carry.

"No," he said quietly.

It was the first time.

Not as a guard.

Not as duty.

But as truth.

A Moment That Cannot Last

Ye-jin exhaled slowly.

"Then… that is enough."

Her eyes remained open.

But her strength was fading.

Dae-hyun stayed beside her, his presence steady, his composure strained beneath control.

"Do not lose consciousness," he said.

But his voice—despite himself—

Had softened.

End of Chapter 8...

The confession had been made.

The moment had existed.

And in the same breath—

It was torn apart by violence.

The river had witnessed both love—

And the cost of it.
