The emerald gate stood open.
Beyond it...
The familiar silhouette of the World Tree stretched across the heavens.
Its countless branches embraced the sky exactly as Kael remembered.
Yet...
It looked different now.
Not because the tree had changed.
Because he had.
Kael stood quietly at the threshold between the First Garden and his own world.
Behind him rested the place where the first dream had bloomed.
Ahead of him waited the world still struggling to survive.
The tiny heartbeat floated lazily around his shoulder, glowing with soft silver-gold light.
"...Home."
It whispered the unfamiliar word with excitement.
"I've never had one before."
Kael smiled.
"Then let's find out what one feels like."
The tiny heart spun happily through the air.
"I think..."
"...it feels warm."
The Child of Dreams suddenly ran toward Kael one last time.
"Wait!"
Kael turned.
The child stopped in front of him, breathing heavily.
"I forgot something."
"What?"
The child reached into the pocket of its white robe.
After searching dramatically for several moments, it finally pulled out...
A tiny wooden whistle.
It looked old.
Hand-carved.
One side had been painted with a little flower.
The other carried a tiny crescent moon.
The Child proudly placed it into Kael's hand.
"This belonged to me."
Kael blinked.
"You want me to keep it?"
The child nodded enthusiastically.
"If you ever feel lonely..."
"...blow it."
Kael laughed softly.
"Will you hear it?"
The child shrugged.
"I don't know."
"But I'll definitely try."
The Forgotten Dream quietly walked beside its twin.
For several moments, it simply looked at Kael.
Then...
It held out a single black feather.
Unlike before...
The feather no longer absorbed light.
Tiny strands of gold shimmered along its edges.
"What is this?"
"...A memory."
Kael frowned.
"A memory?"
The Forgotten Dream nodded.
"When you think..."
"...that hope has disappeared..."
"...look at it."
"It will remind you..."
"...that even nightmares can change."
Kael accepted it carefully.
"Thank you."
The Forgotten Dream gave the smallest smile.
"...No."
"...Thank you."
Cassian approached next.
The once-crystal Gardener carried no perfect flowers anymore.
Instead...
A small leather pouch hung from his belt.
He untied it and poured several tiny seeds into Kael's palm.
They were all different.
Some blue.
Some crimson.
Some almost transparent.
"These..."
Cassian said quietly.
"...are flowers that have never existed."
Kael looked at him.
"They haven't?"
Cassian smiled.
"They will..."
"...if someone plants them."
Kael carefully stored the seeds.
"I'll make sure they bloom."
"I know you will."
One by one...
The twelve Gardeners stepped forward.
None offered legendary weapons.
None granted impossible powers.
Instead...
An old woman handed him a pair of gardening gloves.
"They'll tear."
"But that's alright."
A cheerful old man gave him a simple iron trowel.
"It isn't magical."
"It just digs well."
The child with the lantern removed one tiny star from inside it.
"If someone loses their way..."
"...this one knows how to listen."
Another Gardener handed him a weathered notebook.
Every page was blank.
"History isn't finished."
"You'll need somewhere to write it."
Kael accepted every gift with quiet gratitude.
Each was ordinary.
Yet somehow...
Each felt more valuable than the treasures of kings.
Finally...
Elara stepped before him.
The Mother of Spring held nothing in her hands.
Instead...
She reached upward.
A single emerald blossom floated down from the endless sky.
It landed gently in Kael's hair before dissolving into countless tiny lights.
A pleasant warmth spread through him.
"You've given me another gift."
Kael said.
Elara shook her head.
"No."
"I only returned something."
"What do you mean?"
She smiled.
"You've always carried spring."
"I merely helped you remember."
Kael didn't fully understand.
But somehow...
The words felt true.
The Last Observer approached last.
The immense ancient being looked strangely uncertain.
"...Friends..."
"...give gifts."
Kael nodded.
"Sometimes."
The Observer looked at its empty hands.
"I possess nothing appropriate."
The Child of Dreams groaned dramatically.
"Oh no..."
"You still don't get it."
The Observer tilted its head.
"...Clarify."
The child smiled brightly.
"You don't give friends things."
"You give them yourself."
Silence.
The Last Observer considered those words for a long time.
Then...
One of its countless silver eyes slowly detached from its body.
It drifted into the air before shrinking until it became no larger than a marble.
The silver gradually faded.
It became emerald.
The Observer gently offered it to Kael.
"...Then..."
"...I offer my perspective."
"If you ever cannot see a path..."
"...borrow my eyes."
Kael carefully accepted the tiny emerald eye.
"I'll treasure it."
The ancient being nodded once.
"...Good."
For reasons no one could explain...
It seemed unusually pleased.
Orion laughed loudly.
"I never thought I'd live to see this."
The Keeper smiled.
"Neither did I."
"Good thing you're both dead."
The Child of Dreams burst into uncontrollable laughter.
Even Orion couldn't argue.
"I suppose that's fair."
The peaceful moment lingered.
No one wanted it to end.
Yet...
Journeys could not continue without farewells.
Kael slowly turned toward the emerald gate.
The World Tree waited.
The heartbeat floated onto his shoulder.
The little voice whispered,
"...Are you scared?"
Kael thought honestly before answering.
"A little."
"...Me too."
He smiled.
"Then we'll be scared together."
The tiny heart glowed happily.
"...Together."
Kael took one step.
Then another.
The emerald gate welcomed him home.
As he crossed its threshold...
The First Garden slowly faded behind him.
Not disappearing.
Simply becoming more distant.
Like childhood.
Never gone.
Always remembered.
The World Tree's roots stretched beneath his feet.
Warm wind brushed against his face.
The familiar scent of moss, rain, and ancient bark greeted him.
Birds sang among the branches.
Leaves danced overhead.
It felt...
Comfortingly ordinary.
Then—
A familiar voice shouted from somewhere ahead.
"KAEL!"
Another followed immediately.
"You idiot!"
Then a third.
"I told you he'd come back!"
Kael looked up.
Running toward him beneath the World Tree were three figures.
Aren.
Still carrying his sword across one shoulder.
Lyra.
Her silver-blue robes fluttering wildly as she ignored every ounce of dignity she normally possessed.
Selene.
Book clutched tightly against her chest, tears already streaming down her face.
None of them slowed down.
None of them cared about explanations.
The three crashed into Kael at the same time.
The impact nearly knocked him over.
For several long moments...
No one spoke.
No one asked where he had been.
No one demanded answers.
They simply held onto him.
As if making certain he was truly there.
Kael laughed.
Then...
Without realizing it...
He began to cry.
Far above them...
The World Tree rustled gently.
One ancient leaf drifted from its highest branch.
As it landed upon the earth...
A tiny green sprout emerged beside it.
The first flower of a new season...
Had finally found its home.
