Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: Assignment Begins

The academy did not return to normal after the announcement, even though movement resumed and students dispersed across the grounds, because what had changed was not visible in structure or routine, but in awareness, and as Kael walked away from the central field with the others beside him, the usual rhythm of training, conversation, and routine felt sharper, more deliberate, as if every action now carried weight that hadn't existed before.

"…Assignments," Aren muttered, exhaling slowly as he stretched his shoulders. "I don't like how that sounded."

Lyra glanced at him briefly. "Because it wasn't optional."

Aren grimaced slightly. "…Yeah. That part."

Draven walked ahead of them by half a step, his posture steady, his attention already shifting forward rather than lingering on the announcement. "…We won't be the only ones."

Kael nodded.

"No."

Because the Headmaster had been clear.

Selected students.

Not everyone.

Which meant—

Choice.

And consequence.

As they moved across the courtyard, the academy staff had already begun adjusting formation, instructors speaking to specific groups, directing them toward different sections, some toward the lower halls, others toward the outer gates, and the difference in movement patterns made it clear that something structured was already being set in motion.

"…Look," Lyra said quietly.

Ahead of them, a smaller group of students had been separated from the rest, their positions fixed near one of the side platforms, an instructor standing before them with a tablet of structured mana floating beside him, names appearing and disappearing in sequence.

Aren frowned. "…That's fast."

Kael's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…It was prepared."

They approached.

Not directly into the group.

But close enough to observe.

"…Kael."

The instructor's voice cut through immediately.

Not loud.

But precise.

Kael stepped forward.

"Yes."

The instructor's gaze remained steady as he looked at him, then at the others beside him.

"Aren Valen. Lyra Sylven. Draven Korr."

All four.

Already listed.

Aren let out a low breath. "…Yeah, okay. That's not a coincidence."

Lyra didn't react outwardly.

But her focus tightened.

The instructor continued.

"You've been assigned to the same unit."

Kael didn't ask why.

Because he already understood.

Balance.

Capability.

Adaptation.

Draven spoke.

"…Objective?"

The instructor raised his hand slightly, and the mana display shifted, forming a clear projection of the outer region beyond the academy, sections marked in varying levels of instability.

"Outer forest sector three," he said. "Recent activity confirmed. Unstable entities appearing in clusters."

Aren frowned.

"…Clusters?"

Lyra's voice remained calm. "…So more than what we saw."

The instructor nodded.

"Yes."

Kael's gaze remained on the projection.

"…What's the priority?"

The answer came immediately.

"Observation first. Engagement only if necessary."

Aren raised an eyebrow.

"…That sounds like a lie."

The instructor didn't react.

"It's a directive."

Draven nodded once.

"…Understood."

The instructor lowered his hand slightly.

"You'll be accompanied to the outer boundary by a senior."

A pause.

"Beyond that—"

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"You operate independently."

Silence followed.

Not heavy.

But clear.

Aren exhaled.

"…Yeah, that's definitely not good."

Lyra didn't comment.

Because she understood what that meant.

No controlled environment.

No safety net.

Kael looked at the projection one last time.

Then nodded.

"…When do we leave?"

The instructor didn't hesitate.

"Immediately."

The word settled quickly.

Aren blinked.

"…Of course it is."

Draven turned without another word.

Already moving.

Lyra followed.

Kael didn't pause.

Because waiting—

Wouldn't change anything.

They moved toward the outer section of the academy, the transition from structured interior to boundary zones faster than expected, the usual restrictions lifted for those selected, gates opening without delay, the difference between training and deployment becoming clearer with every step.

At the boundary, a single figure stood waiting.

Older.

Calm.

Presence controlled.

A senior student.

"…You're the unit," he said simply, his gaze moving across them once before settling.

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

The senior turned.

"…Follow."

No introduction.

No explanation.

They moved.

The outer gates opened.

And for the first time—

The academy was behind them.

Not symbolically.

Literally.

The forest stretched ahead, quieter than before, but not empty, the air carrying that same instability Kael had felt earlier, faint, but present, a reminder that what they had faced—

Was only the beginning.

Aren let out a slow breath.

"…Feels different when you're actually leaving."

Lyra's voice remained steady.

"…Because now it's real."

Draven didn't speak.

His focus already ahead.

Kael stepped forward.

Crossing the boundary.

The moment his foot touched the forest ground—

The difference was immediate.

No structure.

No system.

No control beyond what they carried themselves.

He adjusted.

Not consciously.

Naturally.

"…Stay close," Kael said.

Not as an order.

As fact.

The senior glanced back briefly.

"…Good."

Then continued.

Deeper.

Into the forest.

And this time—

There was no preparation left.

Only—

Execution.
