Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Friends and Freedom

The deeper they walked into Eldergloom Forest, the more the world seemed to quiet.

Not completely.

But enough.

The distant sounds of the village had long faded, replaced by the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional snap of twigs beneath their steps.

Sunlight filtered through the canopy above, scattered and uneven, painting shifting patterns across the forest floor.

Rynel stretched his arms as he walked.

"This place never changes," he said. "Same trees, same path, same everything."

"That's because you never look closely," Tovin replied, crouching near a patch of plants. "There are at least three types of herbs here that don't grow near the village."

"…You're the only one who cares about that."

"It could be useful!"

Liora walked ahead quietly, her gaze drifting between the trees.

Kael followed slightly behind.

His steps were steady—but his mind wasn't.

"…Kael."

Liora slowed her pace just enough to walk beside him.

"You've been thinking a lot lately."

Kael didn't deny it.

"…Do you really want to go to the academy that badly?"

The question lingered.

Not casual.

Not light.

Kael's eyes lifted slightly, following a beam of sunlight breaking through the leaves above.

"…When I was younger," he began, his voice quieter than usual, "I thought this village was the whole world."

Rynel glanced back, curious.

"But it's not," Kael continued. "It's just a small part of it."

His gaze lowered, settling somewhere ahead.

"There are people out there… stronger than anything we've seen. Places bigger than anything we can imagine."

"And you want to be part of that?" Tovin asked.

Kael shook his head slightly.

"…Not just part of it."

His grip tightened around the wooden sword resting on his shoulder.

"I don't want to stand at the edge of the world… watching."

There was a pause.

Then—

"I want to stand at the center of it."

The words were calm.

But absolute.

Rynel let out a low whistle. "That's… actually pretty cool."

Liora didn't smile.

She studied him.

"…That's not the only reason."

Kael didn't respond.

Which was already an answer.

"…Your father," she said carefully. "He's not just a normal villager, is he?"

Rynel blinked. "Wait—what?"

Tovin looked between them. "I thought that too, actually…"

Kael exhaled quietly.

"He was a soldier."

The air shifted slightly.

"Not just any soldier," Kael continued. "He fought in places far from here."

Rynel's expression changed. "Then why is he here?"

Kael's gaze darkened slightly.

"…Because he had to leave."

No one spoke for a moment.

"There are things he doesn't talk about," Kael said. "But you can see it."

"In how he moves."

"In how he fights."

"In how he watches everything."

Liora nodded faintly.

"He's strong."

"He is," Kael said.

His voice was steady—but something deeper sat beneath it.

"And even he… stopped."

That was the part that mattered.

Rynel frowned slightly. "So… you don't want to end up like that?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

His eyes sharpened.

"I want to go further."

Further than this village.

Further than his father.

Further than what anyone expected.

"And the academy…" Tovin said slowly, "that's your way out?"

"It's not just a way out," Kael replied.

"It's the only place where strength actually matters."

His voice grew firmer.

"No matter where you're from."

No matter if you're a commoner.

Or a noble.

"…If I stay here," Kael continued, "I'll never know how far I can go."

The forest seemed quieter now.

As if even the wind had paused to listen.

Liora's gaze softened slightly.

"…Then you should go."

Rynel nodded immediately. "Yeah. No point holding back."

Tovin hesitated—but nodded too. "Just… don't die doing something stupid."

Kael let out a faint breath.

"I won't."

For a moment, everything felt… simple again.

Friends.

Laughter.

The forest.

But that feeling—

That faint, unexplainable sensation—

It returned.

Stronger this time.

Kael's steps slowed.

"…Do you feel that?" he asked.

Rynel blinked. "Feel what?"

The air felt heavier.

The light dimmer.

Liora's expression shifted slightly.

"…Something's off."

Tovin stood up quickly. "We should head back."

Kael's eyes moved slowly across the trees.

The shadows between them.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

But even as he agreed—

He knew.

It was already too late.

Somewhere deeper within Eldergloom Forest…

Something had begun to move.

And this time—

It wasn't going to ignore them.
