Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 – Recovery

The rain hadn't stopped.

It fell in thin, uneven lines, too precise to be natural, too inconsistent to be real.

The forest still held its breath.

Four figures stood where the fight had ended.

No one spoke.

Not after that.

Not after the thing that had split in two without a sound.

Vinh's chest rose slowly.

Controlled.

Forced.

His left arm hung at his side.

Still there.

Still attached.

But not right.

"…We're not staying here."

Hongco's voice was low.

Not loud.

But final.

No one answered.

They didn't need to.

Because before any of them could move, the air shifted again.

No light this time.

No visible force.

Just a pull.

A decision made somewhere else.

The ground disappeared.

White.

Cold.

Still.

They were back.

Vinh didn't resist.

He didn't try.

Because he already knew it wouldn't matter.

His body locked in place.

Not restrained.

Not held.

Just… overridden.

Something moved across his skin.

Light.

Scanning.

No pain.

That was worse.

His left arm twitched.

Then stopped.

Then reset.

The tension vanished.

The damage was gone.

Completely.

Vinh flexed his fingers.

Slow.

Too slow.

The movement felt delayed, like something had to approve it first.

"…Tch."

He clenched his hand.

Stronger.

Faster.

Still not right.

"Recovered."

The voice came from nowhere.

And everywhere.

No warmth.

No tone.

Just a statement.

The white space flickered.

Then shifted.

The chamber opened.

They stepped out.

A new room.

Empty.

Clean.

Controlled.

Four beds.

Nothing else.

Vinh stopped at the entrance.

He didn't move in immediately.

Neither did the others.

They stood.

Measured the space.

Measured each other.

The four-armed one didn't approach the beds.

It moved to the side, closer to the wall.

Watching.

Still hunting.

The half-machine didn't react at all.

It stood where it was placed.

No fatigue.

No hesitation.

Hongco walked in first.

Sat down on one of the beds.

But didn't lie down.

Didn't relax.

Vinh stepped in last.

Slow.

Every movement deliberate.

His eyes moved.

Four arms.

Positioning.

Angles.

Predator.

Then the other one.

Two cores.

Out of sync.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

"This isn't a team."

The thought came quietly.

But stayed.

No one spoke.

Not yet.

Then a sound.

Small.

Subtle.

From the four-armed one.

It didn't look at them.

Its throat moved.

Rough.

Unstable.

"…A…po…lo…zi…ro."

Silence.

Vinh didn't respond immediately.

Because that wasn't speech.

That was learning.

The half-machine moved next.

Its chest pulsed once.

"…Vinh."

Perfect.

Too perfect.

No hesitation.

No emotion.

"…You—"

Vinh stopped.

It tilted its head slightly.

"Language… acquired."

Flat.

Direct.

Not human.

Vinh exhaled slowly.

"…Vinh."

He said it again.

This time as confirmation.

Hongco didn't look at them.

"…Hongco."

That was it.

No more introductions.

No trust.

No alliance.

Just names.

Then silence returned.

Vinh sat down slowly.

His left arm rested on his knee.

He watched it.

Waited.

Then the system appeared.

Only for him.

Faint.

Sharp.

[Status: Unregistered]

Below it, an arrow.

Pointing.

Somewhere far beyond the room.

Vinh stared.

"…Still there."

He didn't speak it out loud.

But he knew.

Whatever this was, it hadn't ended.

A quiet shift beside him.

"…You see it too."

Hongco.

Not a question.

Vinh didn't look at her.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Nothing more.

Because they both understood no one else did.

The room dimmed.

Not darkness.

Just less.

As if something was preparing.

Or watching.

Far away.

Not in the forest.

Not on the ship.

Levi stood still.

Around him, tall figures moved.

Not human.

"You will come with us."

No threat.

No choice.

They didn't wait.

The ground shifted.

The world changed.

A vast flat surface stretched outward.

Others were already there.

Same species.

Smaller.

Watching.

The larger ones moved forward.

Dragging something.

Round.

Silent.

Levi's eyes narrowed.

Because whatever it was, it was breathing.
