Chapter 4 - **The Day They Became Us**

Some days don't feel important when they begin.

They feel normal.

Ordinary.

Like just another page in your life.

Until they become the page you can never forget.

---

That morning, the sky was too bright.

Zhi Zhi didn't know why, but it bothered her.

Everything felt… off.

Like her heart was trying to warn her about something her mind didn't understand yet.

---

"Zhi Zhi!"

Cloe ran toward her, slightly out of breath—but smiling in a way Zhi Zhi had never seen before.

Not just happy.

But glowing.

Zhi Zhi's chest tightened.

"What happened?" she asked softly.

Cloe grabbed her hands, squeezing them tightly.

"I need to tell you something."

And for a second—

Zhi Zhi forgot how to breathe.

---

"We're together."

The words came out like a whisper.

But they echoed louder than anything Zhi Zhi had ever heard.

---

Time didn't stop.

The world didn't freeze.

Students still walked past.

Voices still filled the hallway.

Everything continued like normal.

Except her.

---

Zhi Zhi felt it.

That quiet, invisible break inside her chest.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just… final.

---

"Say something!" Cloe laughed nervously. "You're scaring me."

Zhi Zhi blinked.

Then smiled.

Soft.

Perfect.

Just like always.

"I'm happy for you," she said.

And she meant it.

That was the worst part.

---

Cloe pulled her into a tight hug.

"I knew you'd understand," she whispered. "You're the best."

Zhi Zhi closed her eyes.

Hugging her back.

Holding on just a little longer than usual.

Because maybe…

Somewhere deep down…

She was saying goodbye.

---

Later that day, everything felt different.

Even though nothing had changed.

---

Cloe walked beside Shan Fu now.

Not just close.

Not just talking.

But *together.*

---

Their hands brushed.

Then slowly—

They stayed that way.

Fingers intertwined like it was the most natural thing in the world.

---

Zhi Zhi walked a step behind.

Like always.

But now—

She understood her place.

---

"Zhi Zhi, you're so quiet today," Cloe said, glancing back.

"I'm just tired," she replied.

A simple lie.

An easy escape.

---

Shan Fu looked at her for a brief moment.

As if trying to read something.

But then—

He looked away.

And chose Cloe again.

---

That evening, the three of them sat together like usual.

Same seats.

Same table.

Same routine.

---

But Zhi Zhi felt like a stranger in her own story.

---

"Here, try this," Cloe said, holding out a spoon toward Shan Fu.

He leaned slightly forward, tasting it without hesitation.

"It's good," he said.

Cloe laughed, pleased.

"I knew you'd like it."

---

Zhi Zhi looked down at her untouched drink.

The ice had already melted.

Just like something inside her.

---

"Zhi Zhi, you should try too!"

Cloe turned toward her, still smiling.

Zhi Zhi shook her head lightly.

"I'm okay."

---

She wasn't.

But she didn't need to be.

---

Because this was the moment everything became clear.

---

Shan Fu didn't belong to her.

Not in the past.

Not now.

Not ever.

---

And yet—

She stayed.

---

That night, Zhi Zhi sat by her window again.

The same place.

The same silence.

---

But this time, there was no confusion.

No questions.

No hope.

---

Only acceptance.

---

She rested her head against the glass, staring at the city lights.

"They look happy," she whispered to herself.

And for the first time—

Her voice didn't shake.

---

Because love…

Was never about being chosen.

Not for her.

---

It was about watching someone else be chosen—

And still wishing them happiness.

---

A tear slipped down her cheek.

She smiled through it.

Soft.

Quiet.

Broken.

---

"The beauty inside the pain…"

She whispered.

As if finally understanding the meaning.

---

And in that moment—

Zhi Zhi didn't lose them.

She lost herself.
