Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Bonds of Blood and Steel

The twin suns of Crimson Nebula cast a warm golden hue over the floating islands as another day of prosperity unfolded. Cities below bustled with merchants trading star crystals and Tianhen Void Anchors, their stalls overflowing with goods that had tripled in value since Tianhen's arrival. Farmers sang praises in the fields, their harvests so abundant that even the poorest families ate spirit fruits daily. Children in the streets waved wooden swords, pretending to be the Sovereign who had turned a gifted planet into a paradise.

Tianhen walked the outer training grounds of the Tianhen Star Hall with Lin Hao and Lin Mei at his sides. The siblings had grown bolder in the past week. Lin Hao's spatial steps were now crisp and controlled — he could blink fifteen paces without stumbling. Lin Mei's time-slowing had reached seven seconds on moving targets, her small hands steady as she froze a training orb mid-air.

"Again," Tianhen instructed gently, demonstrating a fused move: a spatial blink followed by a time-slowed sword thrust. "Feel the space fold, then let time bend around your blade. Harmony, not force."

Lin Hao tried first. His body flickered, reappearing behind a training dummy. His wooden sword swung — slow for half a second, then snapping forward with sudden speed. The dummy's "head" cracked cleanly.

"Yes!" Lin Hao pumped his fist, then quickly composed himself, glancing at Tianhen with shy pride.

Lin Mei clapped, her eyes shining. "Brother is so fast now!"

Tianhen ruffled Lin Hao's hair, the gesture natural and warm. "You're improving explosively. Both of you. At this rate, you'll surpass most academy students in months."

Lin Mei tugged timidly at Tianhen's sleeve. "Can… can we try together? Like you and Lady Li Qing fight in stories?"

Tianhen smiled — the soft, fatherly smile that was becoming more frequent around them. "Of course. Watch closely."

He demonstrated a simple coordination: Lin Hao creating a spatial distraction while Lin Mei slowed the opponent's reaction. The siblings tried it immediately. Their movements were clumsy at first, but by the third attempt they synced perfectly. Lin Hao blinked in, drawing attention; Lin Mei slowed the dummy's counter; Lin Hao finished with a clean strike.

They beamed at each other, then looked up at Tianhen with something deeper than gratitude — a budding trust that felt like family.

That evening, after dinner in the family pavilion, Lin Hao approached Tianhen alone while Mei played with Qinglan and Xingchen under Li Qing's watchful eye. Mingyue cooed softly in her cradle.

"Teacher," Lin Hao said quietly, fiddling with his robe hem. "Mei and I talked last night. We… we want to call you Father. If that's okay. You've given us more than food and training. You've given us a home. A future. We don't want to be 'street kids' anymore. We want to be… your children."

Tianhen's chest tightened with unexpected emotion. He knelt so they were eye-level and placed a hand on each of their shoulders.

"It would be my honor," he said, voice thick. "From today, you are Lin Hao and Lin Mei — my son and daughter. You train as family. You eat as family. And when the time comes, you will stand beside my blood children as equals."

Lin Mei threw her arms around his neck in a sudden hug, tears wetting his shoulder. "Father…"

Lin Hao hesitated only a second before joining, his lean frame trembling slightly. "Father… thank you."

Tianhen held them both, the God Rock pulsing warmly as if approving the new bond. In that moment, the ruthless sovereign who had decapitated Nascent Soul experts felt something pure and grounding — the weight of fatherhood expanding beyond blood.

Li Qing watched from the doorway, eyes misty with joy. Later that night, after the children (all five now) were asleep, she pulled Tianhen into their chambers.

"Our family grows stronger every day," she whispered, pressing her body against his. "You make me so proud."

Their lovemaking was deep and passionate, bodies moving in perfect rhythm — slow rolls of pleasure building to intense climaxes that left them both gasping and entwined. Li Qing's moans filled the room as she rode him, her hands braced on his chest, whispering "My sovereign… my husband… my everything" until they shattered together in shared release.

But the empire's peace was fragile.

The next morning, border reports turned serious.

Shadowveil Kingdom had escalated. Three Crimson Nebula supply convoys had been "raided by bandits" wearing Shadowveil insignia. Cargo was stolen, guards beaten but left alive with mocking messages: "The Bracelet God's prosperity ends here. Pay tribute or watch your people starve."

Tianhen's eyes darkened as he read the scrolls in the war room. The people's worship had only intensified — shrines now featured statues of him holding the God Rock, parents naming newborns after him — but this jealousy threatened the prosperity he had built.

He summoned his elite squad again, this time with a stronger warning.

"Rebuild the convoys. Double the guards. Deliver this to King Luo Zhan."

He handed over a specially crafted Tianhen Void Anchor — black-veined silver, infused with a powerful void strand that would deliver a personal message if triggered. Embedded was a recording of his voice:

"King Luo, your envy is noted. Continue these games, and I will bring the void itself to your gates. Crimson Nebula offers peace. But we deliver war without mercy."

As the squad departed, Tianhen turned to the training yard where Lin Hao and Lin Mei practiced with renewed vigor, now calling him Father openly. Xingchen and Qinglan cheered them on, Mingyue gurgling happily in Li Qing's arms.

The family was settled. The land prospered. The people saw him as a god.

But shadows from Shadowveil Kingdom loomed larger.

Tianhen gripped his sword, the God Rock humming with anticipation.

The real test of his empire was coming.
