Chapter 13 - The Edge of Becoming

Silence felt different when you chose it.

Max had never understood that before.

Now he did.

He didn't know how much time had passed.

Hours.

Maybe a day.

Maybe more.

The city was still there.

But he wasn't part of it anymore.

Where he was didn't matter.

An abandoned building.

Just another one.

Cold.

Empty.

Like everything inside him.

Max sat on the floor, back against the wall, staring at his hands.

And for the first time…

he didn't trust them.

"What are you…" he murmured.

Silence.

But not empty.

Because now…

silence answered.

The visions didn't come as dreams anymore.

They came while he was awake.

Without warning.

Without control.

He blinked—

And he was there.

The city.

Destroyed.

Clearer than ever.

Closer.

Bodies.

Shadows.

And something…

walking among them.

Not running.

Not hunting.

Just… existing.

And everything around it died.

"This isn't real…" Max said.

But his voice lacked conviction.

"Not yet…"

The answer came.

Low.

Direct.

Max turned.

But no one was there.

"Stop…"

"You asked for answers."

The air grew heavier.

"I didn't ask for this."

"Yes, you did."

A pause.

"The moment you survived."

His heart pounded.

"Survived what?"

Silence.

Then—

"The beginning."

Max shot to his feet.

Body tense.

"I'm not part of this."

"That's exactly what you are."

He shut his eyes tight.

"I'm not…"

But the memory came.

Uninvited.

That night.

The house.

The blood.

The symbols.

And something else.

Something he had never seen before.

Or… never remembered.

A detail.

A moment.

A second.

Where everything seemed to…

wait.

For him.

Max's eyes snapped open.

Breathing hard.

"No…"

But now he knew.

Or at least…

he was starting to.

On the other side of the city…

the others weren't doing any better.

"He's not coming back."

Rick said it while staring out the window.

His voice lower than usual.

More… hollow.

Elena sat nearby.

Silent.

Still dealing with what she'd done.

"He will," she said.

"How are you so sure?"

She didn't answer right away.

But when she did—

"Because he can't run from this."

Silence.

Heavy.

"Neither can we," she added.

Celine watched them.

But this time…

something was different.

Less control.

More concern.

"If he stays alone…" she began.

"He won't," Rick cut in.

"You don't know that."

"I know him."

"You know who he was."

That hung in the air.

Dangerous.

"And who is he now?" Rick asked.

Celine hesitated.

And that was rare.

"Someone who might not come back."

Later…

Max stood high above the city.

Looking down.

The lights.

The people.

All so… fragile.

"This is all going to end, isn't it?"

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

The answer came calm.

Certain.

"And you can stop it."

Max closed his eyes.

"Or cause it."

The air grew heavy.

"I won't let that happen."

"You already did."

His heart stopped for a beat.

"When?"

"When you stayed alive."

Max took a step back.

His mind spiraling.

"So there's no choice?"

Silence.

Then—

"There's always a choice."

A pause.

"You just won't like it."

The wind picked up.

But he didn't move.

Because now…

he understood something.

This wasn't about fighting something out there.

It was about…

fighting himself.

Elsewhere…

Celine closed her eyes.

Breathing slowly.

"I need to find him."

Rick turned.

"I'm coming with you."

"No."

"You're not going alone."

"This isn't about strength."

Silence.

"Then what is it about?"

Celine looked at him.

And said:

"What he's becoming."

Max opened his eyes again.

And this time…

there was no fear.

Only… acceptance.

"If I'm part of this…"

A pause.

"Then I need to understand how far it goes."

Silence.

Then—

"Much further than you imagine."

And in that moment…

Max Donavan was no longer running.

He was…

moving closer.

To whatever had been waiting for him all along.
