Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Yaga Masamichi and the Assessment

Tokyo Jujutsu High — Infirmary

Wearing a white lab coat, with heavy dark circles under her eyes and a beauty mark under her right eye, Ieiri Shoko had just finished treating Kagura Shin while complaining about Gojo Satoru.

"Satoru, how could you let a novice like this deal with a Cursed Spirit alone? Someone untrained like him would probably struggle even against a Grade 3."

"You're wrong about that, Shoko. If I hadn't stepped in at the end, this kid probably would have taken down that Grade 2 Curse with him. In the future, he'll at least reach Okkotsu's level!"

Even though he had already fully recovered, Kagura Shin was still being forced to lie on the hospital bed by the two in front of him. He had long since reached for a scalpel among the nearby surgical instruments, secretly nicked his thumb, and then pulled out a giant loaf of bread, beginning to munch on it under their surprised gazes.

The bread tasted quite fragrant. His sense of fullness didn't change at all until he finished the whole thing, at which point he felt completely full instantly.

Then, the small wound he had just cut with the scalpel healed rapidly.

Ieiri Shoko rushed over and grabbed Kagura Shin's hand to examine it closely.

"It really healed! How did you do it?"

"Uh, Teacher Shoko, this is one way to use my Cursed Technique. I can create food, and as long as I'm full, my body will keep recovering. I'm just not sure if it can restore missing limbs or things like that."

Ieiri Shoko pondered for a moment and said,

"Even if you say that, I don't want to amputate myself. Although recovery is easy, it sounds really painful."

Kagura Shin nodded in agreement, and then both of them turned their heads simultaneously to look at Gojo Satoru, who was idling on the side.

Gojo Satoru: "So?"

In the end, Gojo Satoru snapped off a segment of his own pinky finger. Choosing between bread and an apple, he picked the apple. After eating four apples, he finally felt full.

To their surprise, the finger he had forcibly broken off actually began to slowly grow back. Ieiri Shoko could no longer suppress her excitement.

"This is great! I finally won't have to treat half the Jujutsu World's wounded by myself. Someone can finally share the workload with me!"

Although he didn't want to ruin Ieiri Shoko's vision of a happy life, Kagura Shin immediately threw a bucket of cold water on it.

"Teacher Shoko, the things created by my Cursed Technique disappear once they are sixty-four meters away from me, so I'm afraid your workload won't change much..."

Ieiri Shoko: Σ(ŎдŎ|||)ノノ(╥_╥)

Gojo Satoru offered some timely comfort.

"What's there to be sad about, Shoko? Your workload isn't increasing; at most, it's just staying the same! (◦˙▽˙◦)"

Bang! Bang!

Two loud thuds echoed from inside the infirmary, and then Gojo Satoru and Kagura Shin were both tossed out, each with a large bump on their head.

"I've been wronged, Teacher Shoko! I just didn't want to lie to you!"

Gojo Satoru got up as if nothing had happened, brushed off some non-existent dust, and then grabbed Kagura Shin, heading toward the training ground.

"Oh well, I was originally worried that if your training was too harsh and you got injured often, it would bother Shoko. Now it seems there's no need to worry. Let's begin the hellish training from the devil!"

"Uh, could you go a bit easy on me, Teacher Gojo...?"

...

Since it was still summer break, the first-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High hadn't arrived yet. Except for going out on missions, Gojo Satoru spent almost all his time beating up—no, educating Kagura Shin.

Three days later, Gojo Satoru was sitting on Kagura Shin, who was bruised and battered while eating bread. Suddenly, his phone rang. After finishing the call, he looked at Kagura Shin, who had mostly recovered, and said,

"Shin, the Principal is back from his business trip. He says he wants to see you. Good luck; if you can't satisfy the Principal, you'll be barred from enrolling."

As usual, Gojo Satoru used his common intimidation tactics to try and make Kagura Shin take the upcoming meeting seriously, but the effect was mediocre.

He dragged Kagura Shin to a very spacious room. Inside sat a burly man wearing sunglasses, looking like a Yakuza boss who was not to be trifled with. It would have been more intimidating if he wasn't sewing a gray long-eared rabbit in his hands.

Thud!

The door slammed shut, and the candelabras around the room lit up one by one. When the light returned, Gojo Satoru was already standing far to the side, leaving Kagura Shin alone in front of the Principal, Yaga Masamichi.

"First question: Do you really want to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer? This profession faces the risk of death at any time. You can think it over."

"Of course! I am willing to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer!"

"Good. Then, the second question: Why do you want to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer?"

Yaga Masamichi's tone suddenly became stern. He stopped his sewing work and looked up, his eyes behind the sunglasses staring intently at Kagura Shin.

"..."

Why become a Jujutsu Sorcerer? To avenge his parents by exterminating all Cursed Spirits? Don't be ridiculous. After that bout of crying, the former Kagura Shin had completely died!

Hatred and such had long since been drained away with his tears. If Kagura Shin were asked to talk about revenge now, he certainly wouldn't be able to say it.

While Kagura Shin was deep in thought, Yaga Masamichi released two Cursed Corpses that lunged at him.

"Don't think! Just say what's in your heart!"

Bam!

Kagura Shin was punched into the wall by a Cursed Corpse before he could react. He immediately prepared to defend against the second one.

These two Cursed Corpses were powerful ones carefully selected by Yaga Masamichi. Each had the strength to easily exorcise a Grade 2 Curse. This was intended to put pressure on the new student, leaving him no time to think so he could only speak his first thought.

Yaga Masamichi himself added more pressure with his words from the side.

"Answer me! Why do you want to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer!"

Kagura Shin was barely parrying the attacks of the two Cursed Corpses with his Stone Sword. Even when he swung the Stone Sword, the Cursed Corpses could block it, though they leaked quite a bit of cotton.

Although he had trained for three days, Kagura Shin had only learned some simple ways to use Cursed Energy. He could handle one, but fighting two was simply impossible.

When Kagura Shin was punched into the wall again, gasping for breath with his face covered in blood, he looked through the blood that had entered his eyes and blurred his vision. He seemed to vaguely see himself again, sitting in front of a computer playing games, living a mechanical life—that... ordinary and mediocre self!

"Ans—"

Yaga Masamichi's question, for the umpteenth time, was rudely interrupted by Kagura Shin. He gripped the Stone Sword in his hand tightly and shouted:

"Because I want a more interesting life! I want an exciting, stimulating life! I don't want to go back to that boring version of myself from the past!"

The Cursed Corpses' attacks stopped abruptly.

"Even though your reason isn't exactly... Never mind, you pass. After all, as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, there's nothing wrong with facing your own desires. Alright, Satoru, take him away."
