Shinji was already awake. He stood inside the mission office before the village fully stirred, the board in front of him cluttered with the usual D-rank slips. Simple work.
His eyes scanned them once. He reached out. A few slips came down. Lost pets clustered too close together. Easy delivery routes. Low-effort errands that chained cleanly.
He folded them. Set them aside. A quiet adjustment.
Because yesterday had gone too smoothly and that wasn't reality. Shinji placed new slips forward. Ones that took longer. Ones that required more effort.
He stepped back and studied the board. Then turned and left.
The team gathered at the training ground. Kenta yawned, dragging his feet slightly. "Yeah, I feel it today." Raik looked the same.
Aiko arrived next, composed, but her movements weren't as sharp.
Daiki came last. Still straight. Still focused. But even he looked slightly worn.
Shinji took that in every detail. Then spoke. "Report."
Daiki stepped forward. "Four missions completed yesterday. Energy levels are manageable. No injuries." Aiko added quietly, "Efficiency was maintained throughout." Kenta stretched. "And we didn't die of boredom."
Shinji smirked. "Good." "Today won't be the same."
That got their attention. Daiki's eyes narrowed slightly. "Meaning?"
"You'll adapt." That was all he said.
Back at the mission board Kenta walked up confidently. "Alright, same plan. Stack and attack."
Aiko stepped beside him. "These are different."
Daiki stepped in. Eyes scanning quickly. "Less overlap," he muttered.
Kenta frowned. "What?"
"The missions aren't clustered," Aiko said. "They're spread out."
Daiki nodded. "Travel time increases."
Kenta groaned immediately. "You've gotta be kidding me."
Aiko looked at the slips more closely. "And these require more effort."
Daiki exhaled slowly.
Shinji stood behind them.
"We can't force yesterday's pace," Daiki said finally.
Kenta threw his hands up. "So we slow down?"
"We adjust," Aiko corrected.
Daiki nodded. "We pick fewer missions."
Kenta blinked. "Wait what?"
"If we overextend, we won't recover for tomorrow," Daiki said.
Aiko added, "And sensei wants us ready for a C-rank."
Kenta scratched his head. "So we do less?"
Daiki shook his head slightly. "We do what we can sustain."
Kenta smirked faintly. "Man. I liked it better when we just ran around grabbing cats."
Aiko didn't look at him. "This is better."
Daiki pulled down two slips. "We start here."
The first mission field clearing. Simple on paper. Not in practice.
Kenta stared at the tools. "Yeah… I hate this."
Aiko stepped forward, already assessing. "We don't need to clear everything."
Daiki nodded. "Just the designated area."
Kenta picked up a tool reluctantly. "It still sucks."
They started slow at first. Their bodies still adjusting.
They worked together, rotating tasks, managing effort. Aiko called breaks before they needed them. Daiki adjusted pacing. Kenta complained
And slowly they found rhythm.
By the time they finished the sun had climbed higher.
Kenta dropped the tool immediately. "Yeah, that's enough for today."
Aiko wiped her hands lightly. "We're not done."
Daiki checked the time. Then nodded. "One more."
Kenta groaned. "You're killing me."
The second mission transport crates. Heavy ones.
Kenta stared at them. "Nope."
Aiko crossed her arms. "Yes."
Daiki stepped forward. "We split the load."
Kenta shook his head. "I'm gonna feel this tomorrow."
Shinji's voice came from behind them. "Yes you will."
Kenta glanced back. "You're enjoying this."
Shinji didn't deny it. "You need to know your limits." "And push them."
They lifted, carried. Except this time there was no efficiency trick. No shortcut. Just effort.
And it showed. By the time they finished they were tired.
Kenta dropped to the ground immediately. "Yeah. I'm done." Raik flopped beside him. Aiko sat down more carefully, controlling her breathing.
Daiki stayed standing a moment longer. Then exhaled. "Two missions."
Kenta groaned. "We did four yesterday."
Aiko shook her head slightly. "Yesterday was different."
Daiki nodded.
They regrouped.
Shinji stepped forward. "What changed?"
Kenta answered first. "Everything sucked more."
Aiko almost smiled. "The missions were harder."
Daiki added, "And less efficient to chain."
Shinji nodded. "And?"
"We didn't panic."
Daiki followed. "We adjusted."
Kenta sighed. "We didn't try to be heroes."
Shinji's gaze moved between them. "Good." "Because things won't always go your way."
He looked at Daiki. "Plans fail."
Then Aiko. "Conditions change."
Then Kenta. "And sometimes you just have to push through." Shinji stepped back slightly. "Tomorrow is your last day."
"Finish strong."
Kenta groaned. "Man". But there was no real complaint behind it this time. Just exhaustion.
The third day started quieter than the others.
The team gathered in front of the mission board. No jokes this time. No complaints. Just focus.
Daiki stepped forward, scanning quickly. "Four left," he said.
Aiko nodded. "We're behind pace."
Kenta crossed his arms. "Yeah, no kidding."
Daiki pulled the slips down. His eyes moved between them.
"We take all four."
Kenta blinked. "All four? Today?"
"We don't have a choice," Daiki replied.
Aiko added, "We just have to manage it better."
Kenta exhaled. "Alright. Let's run it."
The first mission went smoothly. They were sharper now. More efficient.
Kenta stretched. "Alright, that felt like day one again."
Aiko checked the list. "Three left."
Daiki nodded. "Keep moving."
The second mission was not as clean. Still good, but slower. The fatigue crept back in. But they pushed through.
Kenta dropped to one knee. "Yeah this is where it starts to suck."
Aiko's breathing was controlled, but deeper now. "We're slowing down."
Daiki checked the time. His expression shifted slightly. "We're behind."
Kenta looked up. "How behind?"
Daiki didn't answer immediately. "We won't finish."
Kenta exhaled slowly. "So what, we just fail?"
Daiki shook his head. "We keep going."
Aiko nodded. "We don't stop."
The third mission started, but the pace wasn't there anymore. They tried, they really did. But the rhythm from before was gone.
Kenta slammed a crate down a little harder than needed. "Damn it."
Aiko stepped back slightly. "We're forcing it again."
Daiki clenched his jaw. "We don't have a choice."
"Yeah," Kenta muttered. "we do. We fail or we don't."
Shinji stepped forward for the first time that day. He stopped beside them.
Looked at the workload. Then at them.
"You're behind," he said simply.
Kenta let out a short laugh. "Yeah, we noticed."
Daiki nodded once. "We miscalculated."
Shinji tilted his head slightly. "Did you?" "Or did the situation change?"
Kenta blinked. "What?"
Shinji stepped forward. "You planned based on yesterday." "But today isn't yesterday."
Shinji exhaled softly. "So adapt."
Before they could respond smoke burst around him. Three shadow clones formed instantly.
Each one taking part of the workload.
Kenta's eyes widened. "Oh come on."
Shinji himself stepped forward and started working too.
Kenta pointed. "WAIT YOU COULD'VE BEEN DOING THAT THIS WHOLE TIME."
Shinji didn't even look at him. "Yes."
Aiko's voice was quieter. "Then why didn't you?"
Shinji lifted a crate like it weighed nothing. "Because my cute little genin"
That already made Kenta roll his eyes.
"If your own power isn't enough" He set it down cleanly. "You rely on your teammates."
Another clone passed by, finishing another section.
"And together"
Another task completed.
"you achieve more."
Kenta scratched his head. "We were doing that though."
Aiko shook her head slightly. "Only within ourselves."
Daiki's eyes narrowed. "We didn't consider outside help."
Shinji nodded once. "Exactly."
Kenta looked at him again. "So why didn't you help earlier?"
Shinji finally glanced at him. "You didn't ask."
Kenta blinked. "That's—"
He stopped because he realized that was true.
Aiko exhaled softly. "We assumed we had to do it alone."
Daiki nodded. "We limited ourselves."
With the clones the workload collapsed quickly. What would've taken hours took minutes.
And when the third mission finished they didn't waste time. They moved straight into the fourth.
And when it ended the sun was just beginning to dip. They stood there.
Kenta dropped to the ground again. "Okay that was worth it."
Aiko sat down more calmly. "We couldn't have done that alone."
Daiki nodded. "Not in time."
Shinji dispelled the clones. Smoke fading into the air. "That's the point." "Strength isn't just what you can do alone."
His gaze moved between them. "It's what you can accomplish together."
Kenta smirked slightly. "Still think you could've helped earlier though."
Aiko smiled. Daiki shook his head faintly. Shinji turned, already walking away. "Next time… ask."
They followed.
