Chapter 35 - Chp 35

The morning after the war ended did not begin with celebration. It began with silence.

The sun had only just begun to rise above the rooftops of Konohagakure when shinobi from every district of the village began moving toward the same destination.

Even civilians gathered along the edges of the stone courtyard.

At the center of it all stood the memorial.

The stone monument rose tall against the morning sky, its polished surface carved with hundreds of names.

Shinobi who had died protecting the village.

And during the last few years, far too many new names had been added.

The Third Shinobi World War had touched every clan.

Today, the village gathered to remember them. At the front of the crowd stood the Hokage. Hiruzen Sarutobi looked older than he had only weeks ago.

Behind him stood the senior shinobi of the village. The courtyard had filled completely by the time Hiruzen stepped forward. He looked out across the gathered villagers.

The Third Hokage removed the ceremonial pipe from his robes and placed it aside.

This was not a moment for comforts.

Then he spoke. "The war is over."

The words carried clearly through the courtyard.

"The forces of Iwagakure have begun withdrawing following the destruction of their supply line at Kannabi Bridge."

A few shinobi exchanged quiet looks.

Many already knew the name responsible. "Thanks to the efforts of our shinobi," Hiruzen said, "the village stands victorious."

He gestured toward the stone monument behind him. "However…" "This victory was not free."

The courtyard grew quiet again.

Hiruzen turned slightly toward the memorial. "These names represent the cost of that victory."

Shinobi who had once laughed in the streets now stood immortalized in stone.

Hiruzen's voice softened. "They were comrades." "And family."

Many of the shinobi gathered in the crowd looked toward the monument now.

Hiruzen finished quietly. "We will honor them by protecting the peace they gave their lives to create."

He bowed his head. The entire courtyard followed.

For several long seconds, no one moved. Then slowly, one by one, people began approaching the monument.

Some placed flowers.

Others simply rested their hands against the carved names.

Shinji waited until most of the crowd had moved forward before he approached.

His eyes moved slowly across the carved surface.

a few names he recognized from missions long ago.

Then he found one.

Raido

Shinji stood there for a moment. The memory returned easily. Shinji placed his hand lightly against the stone.

"You fought well," he murmured quietly.

Behind him, another figure approached.

Soft footsteps stopped beside him.

Shinji didn't need to turn to recognize the presence.

Shisui Uchiha stood next to him, hands in his pockets.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Shisui studied the monument.

"Strange, isn't it?"

Shinji glanced at him.

"What is?"

Shisui gestured toward the courtyard behind them.

"The village is celebrating."

In the distance, faint sounds of cheering echoed from other streets.

Civilians had already begun marking the end of the war.

Shisui's voice softened.

"But here…"

He looked back at the names.

"It doesn't feel like victory."

Shinji didn't answer immediately.

Instead he looked across the stone again.

Then he spoke quietly.

"War never feels like victory to the people who fight it."

Shisui nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought."

The two young Uchiha stood there a moment longer.

Eventually Shisui straightened.

"Well."

He shoved his hands deeper into his pockets.

"Guess the real work starts now."

Shinji raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Peace?"

Shisui smirked faintly.

"Something like that."

He started walking away, then paused.

"Oh."

Shinji looked at him.

Shisui grinned slightly.

"You arguing with Danzo Shimura in the war council yesterday?"

Shinji sighed.

"You heard about that already?"

Shisui laughed.

"Half the jonin corps heard about it."

He shook his head.

"You've got guts."

Shinji looked back at the monument.

"Someone had to say it."

Shisui studied him for a moment.

Then his grin faded slightly.

"You're changing, Shinji."

Shinji raised an eyebrow.

"Am I?"

Shisui nodded toward the tower where the Hokage worked.

"You're not just fighting battles anymore."

"You're playing the game up there."

Shinji followed his gaze toward the Hokage Tower.

The place where wars were decided.

Where villages rose or fell.

Where politics mattered just as much as strength.

He exhaled slowly.

"Someone has to."

Shisui chuckled softly.

"Yeah."

Then he turned and started walking away.

"Just don't become boring like the old men."

Shinji watched him leave.

Then he looked back at the memorial.

The names carved into the stone would never change.

Peace did not slow the training fields of Konohagakure.

If anything, they were busier than ever.

Shinobi returning from the war had not forgotten the habits that kept them alive. Steel still clashed against steel. Kunai still struck wooden targets. The sharp crack of taijutsu echoed across the grounds from dawn until evening.

War might have ended. But shinobi never stopped preparing for the next one.

Standing at the edge of the largest training field was Shinji Uchiha.

He leaned against one of the wooden posts that surrounded the arena, quietly watching the figure sparring alone in the center.

Every strike carried too much force. Too much anger.

Even from this distance, Shinji could see it clearly.

It was Kakashi Hatake.

Shinji pushed himself off the post and stepped onto the field.

Kakashi noticed him immediately.

His single visible eye flicked toward Shinji for half a second before returning to the training post.

He didn't stop.

The next strike splintered wood from the post's surface.

Shinji stopped several feet away.

"You're going to break that thing."

No response.

Another strike landed.

Shinji sighed quietly.

Then he drew a kunai.

"Well."

"Guess we'll see if you're as good as everyone says."

The kunai spun once between his fingers.

That got Kakashi's attention.

The silver-haired jonin turned slowly.

For a moment, the two young shinobi simply stared at each other. Then Kakashi reached down and picked up a kunai from the ground.

No words were exchanged.

They moved at the same time.

Steel clashed instantly.

The first exchange was quick fast enough that a normal observer would barely follow the motion.

Both stepped back. Then they moved again. Kakashi attacked first this time. A sharp thrust aimed for Shinji's ribs.

Shinji pivoted slightly, deflecting the strike and countering with a low kick aimed at Kakashi's leg.

Kakashi jumped over it effortlessly. They separated again.

Kakashi pressed forward with another combination two rapid kunai strikes followed by a sweeping kick.

Shinji blocked the first. Dodged the second. Caught the kick and pushed Kakashi backward.

Kakashi attacked again. Shinji met him head-on.

Their movements flowed smoothly through the next exchange, both fighters reading each other. Several minutes passed like this.

Neither gaining ground.

Neither speaking.

Finally Shinji broke the silence. "You're angry."

Kakashi didn't answer.

He attacked again instead.

Shinji blocked and stepped away.

"Training posts don't help with that," Shinji continued calmly.

Kakashi's eye narrowed slightly.

Shinji sighed quietly. "Alright."

Steel clashed again.

Then Shinji spoke. "I heard what happened."

For the first time, Kakashi hesitated.

"The mission," Shinji continued. "The bridge."

Still nothing.

But Kakashi's attacks had slowed slightly.

Shinji deflected another strike.

"Obito Uchiha."

That name changed everything.

Kakashi's next attack came faster.

Shinji blocked it easily.

"I'm not here to lecture you," Shinji said.

Kakashi finally spoke. His voice was flat. "Then leave."

Their kunai locked together for a moment.

Shinji met Kakashi's eye. "No."

They separated again. Kakashi attacked with renewed intensity. Shinji matched him strike for strike.

"You think you're the only one who's lost someone?" Shinji said calmly.

Kakashi's jaw tightened.

Shinji continued. "You think the war spared the rest of us?"

Another clash.

Another separation.

Then Shinji spoke again. "In the Sand front."

Kakashi hesitated slightly.

Shinji continued. "There was a jonin named Raido Namiashi."

Kakashi blinked once. He knew the name.

Shinji's voice remained calm. "He took a blade meant for me by a Suna jonin named Kasaru. It created an opening…"

The spar slowed.

Kakashi listened now.

Shinji's expression remained neutral. "Really the he only opening I had that whole fight"

He paused briefly. "It was through Raido."

Kakashi's eye widened slightly.

Shinji finished quietly. "I stabbed through him."

The training field went completely silent.

Kakashi didn't move.

Neither did Shinji.

Finally Kakashi spoke. Why are you telling me this?"

Shinji twirled his kunai once before lowering it. "Because you're blaming yourself."

Kakashi looked away slightly.

Shinji continued.

"You think if you had been stronger… faster… smarter…"

"Obito would still be alive."

Kakashi didn't deny it.

Shinji shrugged slightly.

"Maybe."

The blunt honesty made Kakashi look back at him.

Shinji's tone didn't change.

"Or maybe the battlefield just decided differently."

Kakashi's grip on his kunai tightened. Shinji looked directly at him.

"You can carry that guilt forever if you want."

He gestured toward the ground. "Most shinobi do."

Kakashi's voice was quiet now. "You don't?"

Shinji shook his head slightly. "I remember it." His gaze drifted briefly. "But I don't let it decide who I become."

Kakashi stood silently for a moment. Then he lowered his kunai.

"He believed in me."

Shinji nodded.

"I know."

Kakashi stared at the ground.

"He said I was a better ninja than him."

His voice tightened slightly.

"And then he died saving me."

The words hung heavily between them.

Shinji spoke quietly. "Then prove him right."

Kakashi looked up.

Shinji met his gaze calmly. "Become the ninja he believed you were."

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Kakashi slowly straightened.

The anger in his posture had faded slightly.

"You're not very comforting."

Shinji smirked faintly. "I'm not trying to be."

Kakashi actually let out a small breath of something close to a laugh.

They stood there for another moment.

Then Kakashi flipped his kunai in his hand.

"One more round?"

Shinji's smirk widened slightly. "Now you're talking."

They moved again.

Steel clashed across the training field.
