Chapter 17 - CHP17

We arrived at the camp and it was more organized than I thought, we were in the middle of a jungle it seemed, trees way taller than anything i've seen inside Konoha were all around the camp, perfect to hide it.

On the outskirts of the camp you had the sleeping tents, 4 shinobi to a tent, a little deeper into the camp there were several small campfires to cook, and in the middle were two tall tents, one for the higher ups to plan, and one for the commander to sleep in.

I was just walking into my tent, I was going to meet the people I'd be living with for the coming months, so let's start on a good first impression.

I pushed aside the flap of the tent and stepped inside.

Four bedrolls were laid out evenly, packs stowed against the poles, weapons kept close. Whoever had set this up knew what they were doing.

One of the shinobi inside looked up immediately.

He had the telltale red markings on his cheeks

"Inuzuka," I said, more observation than greeting.

He grinned, teeth sharp. "Took you long enough. I could smell you coming from halfway across camp."

A large ninken lifted its head beside him

"I'll take that as a compliment," I replied. "Shinji Uchiha. Chunin."

"Roku," he said, thumping his chest with a fist. "Chunin. And this is Kiba

Kiba the ninken snorted.

From the far side of the tent, someone groaned.

"Great," a lazy voice drawled. "An Uchiha and an Inuzuka. This tent is going to be loud."

I turned to see a dark-haired shinobi lying flat on his back, hands folded over his chest, like he'd rather be anywhere else including the middle of a battlefield.

"Nara," I guessed.

"Unfortunately," he replied. "Nara Tetsu. Chunin. I specialize in strategy, shadow techniques, and avoiding unnecessary effort."

"War zone seems like an odd place for that last one."

He shrugged without sitting up. "Life's full of disappointments."

Before I could respond, the final shinobi inside the tent cleared his throat.

He was older than the rest of us late twenties, maybe early thirties

"Sarutobi clan," he said, nodding once. "Daichi. Special Jonin."

That got my attention.

Special Jonin meant hyper-specialized someone the village trusted with very specific, very dangerous responsibilities.

"Shinji Uchiha," I said again, tilting my head respectfully. "Looks like we're bunkmates."

Daichi studied me for a brief moment, then nodded. "I've read your file."

Roku laughed. "That never sounds reassuring."

"It rarely is," Daichi replied evenly. "But I'm glad you're here."

That surprised me.

Tetsu finally sat up, stretching his arms above his head. "Well, looks like we've got tracking, tactics, firepower, and… whatever Sarutobi-san does that makes people nervous."

Daichi smiled faintly. "I burn things."

Roku blinked. "Huh. Guess we're all set then."

I set my pack down beside the last open bedroll, the reality of it settling in.

These were the shinobi I'd be fighting with. Depending on. Trusting with my life.

Could've been worse.

I glanced around the tent, then allowed myself a small smile.

"Alright," I said. "Let's try not to die."

Tetsu groaned again. "Already asking too much."

Roku laughed, Kiba barking along with him.

And for the first time since we'd arrived at the camp, the jungle outside felt just a little less oppressive.

It wasn't long that I started to get responsibilities, Daicchi had left the tent and came back shortly after.

He entered the tent and spoke "Alright rest up we have Patrol tonight, we gotta show newbie here the camp"

Tetsu groaned and said sarcastically "love having you already"

That got a laugh out of Roku and his ninken.

I said "ok i don't know about you guys but its a bit too early to sleep, is there anywhere I can train?"

Daichi looked up "Yes just go north of this tent you can't miss it its by a river, though we have watch tonight are you sure you want to train, you can't be gassed out on Patrol"

I nodded "Yea I got it, im only doing Chakra control stuff keeping it light"

Daichi nodded. "Very well"

I left the tent and followed the sounds of water until the jungle opened slightly, revealing a slow-moving river.

Perfect.

I stepped onto the water and let my chakra settle

I exhaled and moved.

Uchiha taijutsu wasn't flashy. It was built on balance, efficiency, and punishment for mistakes. Every movement flowed into the next

My feet skimmed the water as I advanced, turned, and retreated.

Too much chakra and the surface rejected me. Too little and I'd sink. The constant correction demanded precision.

I struck at empty space, imagining an opponent in front of me

Again.

Faster this time.

A spinning backfist, a low kick

I slowed, This wasn't about exhaustion. It was about control under pressure.

Satisfied, I came to a stop and allowed myself to sink ankle-deep before stepping back onto the riverbank.

Jiraiya stood with his arms crossed, as he observed the lone shinobi by the river.

Water-walking taijutsu drills.

Clean chakra control. No wasted movement.

That's not Academy teaching, he thought. And it's definitely not panic training.

The boy moved like someone who expected to survive.

Jiraiya turned away without a word, vanishing back into the jungle.

Hiruzen, he mused, you sent me something interesting.

With training done I went back to the tent to rest, a few hours into my sleep Daichi woke me up

"Wake up we have Patrol"

I slept in my battle gear so I was good to go.

We moved out

The jungle changed in the dark. Sounds felt louder, shadows felt darker, and every rustle gave you an adrenaline rush. Roku moved ahead with his ninken, while Tetsu and I took the center. Daichi watched the rear.

As we walked, Daichi spoke quietly.

"The camp is layered," he said. "Outer perimeter is early warning traps, sensors, patrol routes like this one. Inner ring is rapid response. If something hits the camp, it shouldn't be a surprise."

"So we're bait," Tetsu muttered.

Daichi nodded. "If necessary."

That sat wrong in my stomach, but I didn't argue.

"In the event of enemy contact," Daichi continued, "protocol is clear. One shinobi disengages immediately and runs to camp for reinforcements. No heroics. No hesitation."

Roku glanced back. "And who gets to run?"

"You," Daichi said without missing a step. "Fastest nose, best odds of making it back."

Roku grinned. "Figures."

We reached a slight rise overlooking a narrow clearing

Roku froze.

Kiba's ears flattened.

"Four," Roku whispered. "Wind country scent."

They stepped out of the trees almost at the same time we did. Four shinobi. Just like us.

No one spoke.

Daichi exhaled slowly. "Protocol."

Roku didn't hesitate. He turned and vanished into the jungle, Kiba right beside him.

One of the Suna moved to pursue

"Now," Tetsu snapped.

Shadows stretched across the ground, snapping around two of the Suna shinobi mid-step.

"Shadow Possession partial!" Tetsu grit his teeth. "I can't hold them long!"

Daichi was already moving.

A burst of fire lit the clearing, forcing the remaining two Suna back. I stepped in beside him, Sharingan spinning to life as kunai flashed toward us.

Steel rang against steel.

I blocked, countered, pivoted Uchiha taijutsu flowing instinctively now. One Suna nin came in low, blade aimed for my ribs. I twisted, elbow crashing into his shoulder.

They fought with desperation

They're buying time, I realized.

Daichi slammed a palm into the ground, fire roaring up between us and the trapped shinobi. "Hold the line!"

Tetsu's breathing turned ragged. "Shinji left!"

I turned just in time to deflect a poisoned senbon, my heart hammering. The jungle felt too tight,

Then signals.

Konoha chakra signatures surged from behind us.

The Suna nin reacted instantly.

They disengaged with practiced precision, leaving one of their own wounded. Animals I thought

Daichi moved faster than I thought possible

The Suna nin shinobi looked up at him.

Then smiled.

He bit down hard.

There was a sharp crack, then nothing.

The body went limp.

Daichi released him slowly.

I stared at the body.

No interrogation. No answers.

Just… gone.

"He killed himself."

I felt cold spread through my chest.

This wasn't a battle. There was no victory here.

Just a life ended on purpose so others could keep fighting.

Daichi rested a hand on my shoulder.

"This is war. Not the stories they tell back home."

I nodded.
