Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 — Echoes Through the Rift

Marvin's boots whispered against the stone floor as he stepped into the West Wing. The air was colder here, heavier, and the darkness seemed almost solid. The rift ahead tore the corridor into shadow and flickering light, a jagged wound in reality. Its edges pulsed like a heartbeat, alive and aware.

He gripped the Stabilization Crystal tighter. "Okay… let's see what you want," he muttered under his breath.

A tendril of darkness shot toward him, writhing and twisting like a living thing. He slammed the crystal forward. Light bloomed, forming a dome of protection. The tendril recoiled with a hiss, sparks curling and vanishing into the air.

Marvin stumbled back, catching his balance on the polished stone. "Yeah… that's not exactly welcoming."

From behind him, the soft glow of the Star-Kind Traveler appeared, and Ironjaw's massive shadow filled the hallway. Even the Whispering Shadow drifted forward, silent but watching the rift with unblinking attention.

Marvin forced a shaky breath. "Good. At least I'm not alone."

The first shadow tendril lunged again. Marvin braced, the crystal flaring as he pushed the darkness back. His focus tightened. He wasn't just blocking—it was more than that. He could feel the energy around the rift, chaotic yet searching, probing for weakness.

A figure emerged from the void within the rift—a shape that flickered constantly, never fully solid. Eyes glimmered everywhere along its shifting form, each one fixated on him.

Marvin's stomach tightened. "…Of course. A nightmare."

The figure advanced. Marvin raised the crystal, channeling a steady pulse of energy, not attacking but holding. The shadows shrieked, twisting in protest, yet stopped at the barrier's edge.

He could feel the rhythm of the Guest House beneath his feet, steady and alive. The house's pulse anchored him. For the first time, he wasn't just reacting; he was directing the energy around him, shaping it with intention.

The shadow figure tilted its head, uncertain. Marvin's confidence grew. He stepped closer, letting the crystal's glow extend further into the rift. The figure recoiled, wavering, unsure.

Marvin took a deep breath, his pulse syncing with the house's. "…Alright… stay calm… steady." He pushed forward a little more, and the rift trembled, the edges flickering and shrinking.

The humanoid form twisted again, hissing in frustration, before dissolving entirely into the shadows, retreating into the void.

Marvin's knees almost buckled. He dropped the crystal into his palm and exhaled. "…Okay. That… actually worked."

The corridor was quiet now, but the tension remained. The Star-Kind Traveler floated to his side. "You stabilized the first rift," it said softly. "But there are more. Each will test you in ways you can't yet anticipate."

Marvin nodded, swallowing hard. "…Then I'll just have to keep learning… fast."

He glanced back at Ironjaw and the Whispering Shadow. Both gave him quiet acknowledgment. He looked ahead—the corridor stretching into darkness, edges trembling, secrets waiting.

Marvin squared his shoulders. "Time to see what's really beyond this one."

The rift pulsed once more, as if acknowledging him. Marvin's hand tightened on the crystal, his heart steadying. The Guest House hummed beneath him, patient, alive, and waiting.

And somewhere deep in the void beyond, something was watching. Calculating. Waiting.

Marvin stepped forward.
