Marvin was just beginning to enjoy the silence.
For the first time since arriving at the Guest House, nothing was exploding, floating, whispering, or trying to stab him with cutlery.
He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, staring at the glowing panel in front of him.
> Guest Harmony: 74%
Active Guests: 5
Stability Status: Normal
"…Normal," he repeated slowly. "I like that word."
A soft crack echoed through the hallway.
Marvin froze.
"…I don't like that sound."
Another crack followed.
This one louder.
The walls trembled slightly, dust drifting from the ceiling like falling ash.
DING!
> Warning: Structural Instability Detected.
Location: East Wing (Restricted Area).
Marvin straightened. "Restricted? Since when do I have restricted areas in my own house?"
The system did not respond.
Of course it didn't.
With a sigh, Marvin pushed himself off the wall and followed the sound.
The hallway grew darker the further he walked. The soft golden lights that usually lit the Guest House flickered, dimming into a cold, bluish glow.
The air felt… wrong.
Heavy.
Like something unseen was pressing down on everything.
"…Yeah," Marvin muttered. "This is definitely not a good sign."
At the end of the corridor stood a door.
Unlike the others, this one was different.
Black.
Cracked.
And faintly pulsing, like it had a heartbeat.
Each pulse sent a thin line of light through the cracks.
And with every pulse—
CRACK.
The door split a little more.
Marvin stopped a few steps away. "Nope. Absolutely not. I'm not opening that."
The door creaked open on its own.
"…I hate this place sometimes."
A cold wind rushed out, carrying whispers that didn't belong to any language Marvin understood.
Inside—
Reality was broken.
The room beyond wasn't a room anymore.
It was a tear.
A jagged rift hanging in midair, glowing with unstable energy. Beyond it, shadows moved—shapes twisting and stretching like they were trying to force their way through.
Marvin's breath caught. "That's… definitely not part of the guest experience."
DING!
> Emergency Quest Assigned: Stabilize the East Wing Rift.
Failure Condition: Cross-Realm Breach.
Reward: Rift Barrier Control.
Marvin stared at the quest.
"…Cross-realm breach sounds very bad."
Something moved inside the rift.
A long, thin limb pushed through—too long, too sharp, and definitely not friendly.
Marvin stumbled back. "Oh no. No no no—stay in there!"
The limb stretched further, scraping against the edges of the tear.
The air warped around it.
Behind Marvin, footsteps echoed.
The Star-Kind Traveler arrived first, its glow dim but steady.
"The boundary weakens," it said calmly.
"Yeah, I noticed!" Marvin snapped. "Any helpful advice?!"
"Stabilize the flow," the Traveler replied.
"…Why does everyone keep saying that like I know what it means?!"
The Whispering Shadow appeared next, its form flickering.
"The edge is thinning," it whispered. "Something seeks entry."
"I can SEE that!"
The limb suddenly slammed against the floor.
BOOM.
Cracks spread across the ground like spiderwebs.
Marvin's heart pounded. "Okay… okay… think…"
Garden of Time.
Dining Hall.
Stabilize the flow.
"…It's all the same thing," he muttered.
Energy.
Chaos.
Balance.
He clenched his fists and stepped forward.
"Alright… if this house listens to me…"
The air shimmered.
The rift pulsed violently, as if resisting.
Marvin pushed harder.
"Then LISTEN!"
For a moment—
Nothing happened.
Then—
A faint glow spread from his feet, moving across the floor like liquid light. The cracks slowed. The air steadied.
The limb froze mid-movement.
Marvin's eyes widened. "It's working!"
DING!
> System Notice: Host has initiated Rift Stabilization.
The glow expanded, climbing up the walls, wrapping around the edges of the tear.
The rift shrank slightly.
The creature on the other side let out a distorted, silent scream as it was pushed back.
But it resisted.
The pressure increased.
Marvin gritted his teeth. "Why is nothing ever easy?!"
The floor beneath him cracked.
The glow flickered.
The rift surged again.
"No—no no—stay back!"
Then—
A second glow appeared.
The Star-Kind Traveler raised a hand, its light merging with Marvin's.
"The house responds to will," it said. "You are not alone."
The glow strengthened.
The rift trembled.
The limb snapped backward, vanishing into the darkness beyond.
With one final pulse—
The tear sealed.
Silence fell.
Marvin collapsed to his knees, breathing heavily.
"…I hate this job."
DING!
> Quest Completed: Stabilize the East Wing Rift.
Reward Unlocked: Rift Barrier Control (Basic).
A new panel appeared.
> New Ability: Create Barriers to Prevent Cross-Realm Intrusions.
Marvin glanced at it, then laughed weakly. "Yeah… I'm definitely going to need that."
Behind him, the Whispering Shadow spoke softly.
"The edge has been touched."
Marvin looked back. "What does that mean?"
The Shadow's eyes flickered.
"It means," it whispered, "something now knows you are here."
Marvin's smile faded.
"…Great."
He turned back to the sealed wall.
For now, the Guest House was safe.
For now.
But somewhere, beyond reality—
Something was watching.
And next time…
It might not knock.
