Chapter 66 - The Recognition

Chapter 21: The Recognition

The old woman found her in the garden.

Not the reception garden—the real one. Behind the guest hall. Where the roots twisted into shapes that almost looked like thrones.

Lira had needed air.

She had needed to not be looked at.

"You have his walk."

Lira turned.

The old Wood Elf was small. Smaller than the others. Her hair was white moss. Her eyes were the color of the tree's sap. She wore simple gray robes and no jewelry.

No shoes, either.

"Who?"

The old woman smiled. It was not a happy smile.

"Your father."

Lira's chest tightened.

"I don't have a father."

"You do. You did." The old woman sat on a root-throne. Patting the one beside her. "Sit. My knees are old, and I hate looking up."

Lira didn't move.

The old woman sighed.

"I am Vesper. I was your father's nurse. His confidant. His... co-conspirator." She paused. "He was a fool. A wonderful, stubborn, doomed fool."

"What happened to him?"

Vesper looked at the canopy. The silver leaves filtered the moonlight into something soft and cold.

"He fell in love."

A pause.

"With a red elf. A slave."

Lira's hands curled into fists.

"The court did not approve. They never do. But your father was a prince. He thought his blood protected him."

She laughed.

"It did not."

"What happened to him?" Lira asked again. Harder this time.

Vesper looked at her.

"He exiled himself."

Silence.

Crack.

A branch somewhere. Or a footstep.

"He could have fought," Vesper continued. "He could have rallied allies. He could have burned the court to ash and salted the earth."

She shook her head.

"Instead, he left. He said he would rather lose you than raise you in a place that would try to destroy you."

Lira's voice was barely a whisper.

"Did it work?"

Vesper didn't answer.

Drip.

Sap. From somewhere.

"No," the old woman finally said. "They found you anyway. Kuiji and the others made sure of it."

Lira's blood went cold.

"He was the one who took you from your mother's arms. He was the one who sold you to the mines. And he is the one who has been watching you ever since."

"Watching me?"

Vesper nodded.

"Your name appears in his ledgers every year. Not because you were still his property. Because he wanted to know where you were. In case you ever became... useful."

Lira felt sick.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Vesper stood. Her old knees cracked.

"Because your father asked me to. Before he left. He said: 'If she ever returns to Vertia, tell her the truth. All of it. And then help her run.'"

She reached into her robe.

Not a letter.

A key.

Worn smooth by years of touch.

"This was his. To a vault beneath the old palace. He said it contains everything you need to know. His research. His evidence. His confession."

Lira stared at the key.

"Why didn't you destroy it?"

Vesper smiled. Sad now.

"Because he asked me not to. He said: 'If she returns, she deserves to choose. To run. Or to stay and fight.'"

She pressed the key into Lira's palm.

"He knew you wouldn't run."

Then she turned.

Walked back toward the shadows.

"Vesper."

The old woman stopped.

"Was he... did he..."

"Love you?" Vesper didn't turn. "More than anything. More than his crown. More than his life."

She walked into the dark.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

Then silence.

Lira stood alone in the garden.

The key was warm in her hand.

She looked at it.

Then she looked at the reception hall. Where Kuiji was still smiling. Still charming. Still watching.

She closed her fist around the key.

And walked back inside.
