It was Friday morning when I decided I was done being patient. The city looked too clean for what I was about to do.
The sky was a piercing blue that felt almost mocking against the heat building in my chest. But I wasn't here for peace. I wasn't here to admire anything. I was here for her.
Carter Group headquarters rose in front of me like a statement tall, cold, untouchable. Steel and glass stacked into something that felt less like a building and more like a warning.
People moved in and out of the revolving doors as they belonged to it. Some nodded as I passed. Some looked away too quickly. Others just stared, like they already knew something was about to break.
I stepped inside. The air hit me first clean, fresh, scented with glass, steel, and corporate polish. The air conditioning was freezing, set too high, but it didn't touch the fire under my skin.
And then I felt it. The change in the environment. The room reacted to me before anyone even spoke.
