Chapter 272 - The Weight of Seeing

The visions came without warning.

One moment Kaelen was walking through the palace corridors, his companions around him. The next, he was watching Alistair fall.

It was quick.

A blade from the shadows.

A spray of blood.

The light fading from sea-colored eyes.

Kaelen's lungs locked.

He stopped breathing.

For one terrible second, his body forgot how.

Then air tore into his chest.

He gasped so sharply that his ribs hurt.

His vision narrowed.

The corridor disappeared around him, replaced by the image of Alistair collapsing onto the marble.

"No."

The word barely escaped his mouth.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

Blood rushed violently through his ears, drowning out every other sound. His hands went cold, then hot. A tremor started in his fingers and quickly spread through his arms.

He tried to move.

His legs refused.

The image continued.

Alistair's body hit the floor.

Blood spread beneath him.

Those sea-colored eyes stared upward, empty.
