Chapter 2 - Chapter 1 Total Contempt

Chapter 1 Total Contempt

Amidst the bustling crowds of Suvarnabhumi Airport's arrivals terminal, a tall, imposing figure in a dark, high quality suit stepped out. This was Arthit, a thirty five year old man standing 180 cm tall. His sharp, rugged face, which often carried a stubborn and fierce edge, swept across the surroundings with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

It had been over a decade since he was exiled abroad following a massive fallout with his father. His return to Thailand wasn't driven by homesickness, but rather a forced command from his father, Sia Son. He was ordered back to take over the family's aromatic coconut empire and a massive export warehouse in Bang Pa a multi million baht business so lucrative it was the envy of many.

"Over here, you little brat!"

A familiar, resonant voice cut through the clamor. Arthit paused slightly before turning toward the source. A dignified older man, his face etched with the lines of age, stood prominently not far away. Although they rarely spoke and whenever they did, it usually ended in a verbal brawl a certain bond made Arthit's chest tighten with an unavoidable heaviness.

Arthit walked straight to his father and raised his hands in a respectful Wai.

"Hello," he said curtly.

However, as soon as he lowered his hands, his sharp eyes flicked toward a middle-aged woman standing slightly behind Sia Son. Arthit's expression instantly turned ice-cold.

"What are you doing here?"

The question was blunt, devoid of any warmth or affection. It was directed at Na Ying, a middle-aged woman who had always maintained a quiet and humble presence.

"Arthit! Na Ying insisted on coming to pick you up herself," Sia Son quickly intervened, trying to bridge the smoldering tension radiating from his son.

"Unnecessary... A stranger shouldn't be so bold as to show her face here."

"Arthit! Speak to Na Ying with some respect! She's been taking care of your father for years!" The father's voice rose in frustration, seeing that his son hadn't lowered the guard he had held against his new wife for all these years.

A contemptuous smirk played on the corner of Arthit's mouth. His dark eyes flashed with a cold fire.

"And why should I speak nicely to a parasite? Someone who's just waiting to suck my father dry and trying to take my mother's place? Just looking at her face makes my eyes itch with disgust."

"You..." Sia Son gritted his teeth, struggling to suppress an explosion of rage in the middle of the airport.

"Go! I don't want to argue with you here. We'll talk at home. And don't say I didn't warn you, Arthit."

Arthit didn't offer a rebuttal. He simply snatched his suitcase and strode away, leaving a stifling atmosphere in his wake.

The black, high-lift 4-door pickup truck pulled out of the terminal loop, heading south toward Ratchaburi. Inside the cabin, a suffocating silence reigned, broken only by the hum of the air conditioner. Sia Son drove with a grim face, while Na Ying sat in the passenger seat with a faint, uneasy smile.

Arthit chose to stare out the back window, lost in his own thoughts, refusing to start a conversation. Eventually, the heavy silence was broken by his father's raspy voice.

"How was it... living over there?" Sia Son asked through the rearview mirror, attempting to dismantle the thick wall his son had built.

Arthit slowly shifted his gaze from the scenery which had begun to transition from skyscrapers to lush greenery and met his father's eyes in the mirror for a brief second before replying in a flat, sarcastic tone.

"Are you actually interested in how I was?"

"Look, Arthit... I'm asking you nicely," Sia Son's grip on the steering wheel tightened, the veins on his temples throbbing with rising heat.

"It was good... much better than Thailand," Arthit finished the sentence by intentionally glancing at the woman in the front seat. By better, he didn't mean the living conditions; he meant the peace of mind he had when he didn't have to witness someone else trying to replace his mother.

"Fine... good then," Sia Son forced out the response before slamming the accelerator, surging the truck forward as if desperate to reach their destination and end this psychological warfare.

After nearly two hours, the paved road led the large vehicle into Ratchaburi province. The scent of earth and the mist from the garden canals hit his nose as the window was cracked open. The truck passed rows of towering coconut trees, planted in perfect order as far as the eye could see. The fronds swaying in the wind seemed to welcome the young master's return.

But for Arthit... it felt like a replica of the prison he had once escaped, only to be dragged back and locked up once more.

Finally, the elegant truck braked to a halt in front of a large, modern Thai style house half wood, half cement. It was the house where he had run around as a child. The house where he shared warm memories with his mother... and the same house he had been sent away from like someone of no value.

Arthit hopped out as soon as the engine died. He let out a frustrated huff, scanning the grounds. The house still looked as grand as ever, but it no longer felt like home to him.

"Arthit... want me to help you bring your things up?" Sia Son called after him while opening the tailgate.

He didn't bother looking back at his father's irritated gesture or the lingering, guilt-ridden gaze Na Ying cast his way. Arthit simply marched into the large wooden house. The familiarity embedded in his memory guided him automatically; despite being gone for over a decade, his body remembered every turn and every corner of the teak pillars as if he had only left yesterday.

He ignored the voices calling him and everything around him, heading straight for the second floor. He climbed the wooden stairs, which creaked loudly under his heavy footsteps, and stopped in front of the bedroom at the very end of the hallway his only private sanctuary.

Thud!

His large hand pushed open the old wooden door. A familiar scent hit his nose. Arthit tossed his suitcase and belongings onto the floor without a care before throwing himself onto the wide bed with such force that it groaned under his weight.

He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, where traces of the glow-in-the-dark star stickers he had pasted as a child still remained. A profound silence enveloped the room until he could hear the sound of his own uneven breathing.

Everything was the same... as if time had been frozen the day he left. Arthit moved his fingertips, tracing the faded bedsheets. He was surprised to find that every item was still in its place, perfectly organized. Nothing had been moved, and most importantly, there was no dust as if someone had been meticulously cleaning, sweeping, and cherishing this room.

He took a deep breath. The faint scent of detergent clinging to the pillowcase wasn't the brand he used to use, but it was a clean, delicate fragrance that felt strangely soothing.

'Who? Who is the one who has been messing with my private space for the last ten years?'

Curiosity began to bloom amidst his travel fatigue. Arthit closed his eyes, trying to shake the image of his father's scowling face from his mind.
