Chapter 20 - The Ones Who Should Not Be Seen

The shadows did not move like shadows.

They waited.

Kael stood still, his gaze fixed ahead—not searching, not reacting, simply… aware.

Beside him, Riven stretched his shoulders slightly, as if preparing for something casual rather than dangerous.

"You're sure they're watching?" Riven asked, his tone light—but his eyes sharp.

Kael didn't look at him.

"They've been watching since we left the valley."

Riven tilted his head.

"Wow. And you didn't tell me?"

A pause.

"You didn't need to know."

Riven smiled.

"Right. Because that always works out well."

The air shifted again.

This time—

Closer.

From the darkness ahead, a shape formed.

Then another.

Then more.

They didn't step forward.

They didn't reveal themselves fully.

They simply… existed.

Figures without clear form.

Like silhouettes—but heavier, more real.

Riven exhaled slowly.

"Okay… not gonna lie, that's new."

Kael's voice remained steady.

"They're not attacking."

Riven raised an eyebrow.

"…Yet."

One of the figures moved.

Not forward.

Not backward.

Around them.

Encircling.

Riven shifted slightly, now standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Kael.

"You want me to handle this," he said casually, "or are we doing your usual 'stand still and terrify them' strategy?"

Kael stepped forward.

The moment he moved—

The shadows reacted.

They flickered.

Distorted.

As if his presence alone disrupted them.

"You shouldn't be here," one of the figures spoke.

Its voice was broken.

Layered.

Not one voice—

Many.

Riven blinked.

"Wow. That's unsettling."

Kael didn't stop walking.

"Neither should you."

The figure shifted.

"We were not erased."

Silence.

Riven's expression changed.

Not joking anymore.

Kael stopped.

"And yet," he said quietly,

"you hide like something that was."

The shadows trembled.

For a moment—

Their forms became clearer.

Not fully human.

Not fully anything.

Riven let out a low whistle.

"…Yeah, I'm starting to see why they sealed you."

One of the figures snapped toward him.

"You speak too freely."

Riven grinned.

"I've been told that."

The tension rose instantly.

The shadows moved closer.

The air grew heavier.

Then—

Kael stepped forward again.

And everything stopped.

The shadows froze.

Not by force.

By recognition.

"You know what I am," Kael said.

Silence.

The figures did not deny it.

"You shouldn't exist," one of them whispered.

Riven glanced at Kael.

"…You get that a lot?"

Kael ignored him.

The shadows shifted uneasily.

"He should not walk free," another voice said.

"Then stop me," Kael replied.

A long pause followed.

The shadows trembled.

But they did not move.

Riven leaned slightly toward Kael.

"…They're scared of you."

Kael's voice remained calm.

"They remember."

The shadows stepped back.

Slowly.

Unwillingly.

"This world is breaking," one of them said.

"And you are part of it."

Kael didn't deny it.

"We are not your enemy," the voice continued.

"But we are not your allies."

Riven raised a hand slightly.

"Cool. Neutral evil or just complicated?"

Silence.

Kael turned away.

"Then stay out of my way."

The shadows parted.

Not in submission.

In understanding.

As Kael and Riven walked past them, the air slowly returned to normal.

But just before they left—

One of the figures spoke again.

"She remembers you."

Kael stopped.

Only for a moment.

"That will change everything."

Silence.

Riven looked at Kael.

"…That sounded important."

Kael continued walking.

"Yes."

Riven smirked.

"So… we going back to her?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Riven grinned.

"Nice. I was hoping you'd say that."

Far away—

In the frozen valley—

She stood alone.

But not still.

The ice around her cracked in uneven patterns.

Her control slipping.

Her thoughts… unstable.

Fragments of memory.

Flashes of something lost.

And a face—

His face.

"…Who are you…" she whispered again.

And this time—

The question felt closer to being answered.

Because something was coming back.

And when it did—

Nothing would remain the same.
