Martha Grey realizes her mistake sometime around midnight.
I know this because Lucas receives a series of text messages at increasingly frantic intervals while he sits in his study pretending not to be traumatized by the events of the day. I find him the next morning with dark circles under his eyes and his phone face down on the desk, like he cannot bear to look at it anymore.
"She has been texting all night," he says, his voice flat and exhausted. "Apologies. Explanations. More apologies. She wants to make things right."
"That's good, isn't it? She understands now."
"She wants to apologize to everyone. Not just me. Not just you. Everyone who witnessed her assumption. Sophie. Kevin. Marlene. She has made a list."
I stare at him. "She made a list of people to apologize to."
