Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: The Silence After the Storm

The penthouse was too quiet.

Guàn Jǐngchén stood in the middle of the living room, staring at the empty space where Lin Yuè's suitcase had once sat. The walk-in closet still held the soft pastel sweaters and hoodies he had bought for him. The kitchen still had the mug Lin Yuè preferred — the one with the faint chip on the handle that he always turned away from his lips out of habit.

Everything was exactly as it had been yesterday.

And yet nothing was the same.

He hadn't gone after him.

After the boardroom, after the confession, after the world had shattered around him, Guàn Jǐngchén had simply sat in his office for hours, staring at the wall. Security had reported that Lin Yuè had left the building on foot. No destination. No tracking requested.

He had let him go.

Now, hours later, the rage had cooled into something colder, sharper — a hollow ache that refused to be ignored.

Guàn Jǐngchén walked to the bedroom and stopped at the foot of the bed. The sheets were still rumpled from that morning, from the desperate, emotional way they had made love before the audit began. He could still smell Lin Yuè on the pillows — that soft, clean scent that had become home.

He sat down heavily on the edge of the mattress, elbows on his knees, head in his hands.

Eclipse.

The name echoed in his mind like a gunshot.

The same ghost he had hunted for five years — the one who had slipped through his defenses, left a mocking yet strangely protective message, and vanished — had been sleeping in his bed. Kissing him. Whispering "I love you" while Guàn Jǐngchén buried himself inside him.

Every memory replayed in cruel clarity.

The shy smiles.

The trembling when he was touched.

The way Lin Yuè had looked at him with those big doe eyes, soft and vulnerable, while hiding a deadly genius behind them.

Guàn Jǐngchén's hands clenched into fists.

He had been played.

And the worst part — the part that made his chest feel like it was being ripped open — was that he had loved every second of it.

He had fallen for the mask.

He had fallen for the boy.

And now he didn't know which one was real.

Meanwhile, across the city in a cheap motel room Lin Yuè had paid for with the last of his emergency cash, the boy who had once been Eclipse sat on the edge of a hard bed, staring at the blank wall.

He hadn't cried since leaving the tower. The tears had dried up somewhere between the park bench and this anonymous room.

His phone was off. No messages. No calls.

He knew Guàn Jǐngchén hadn't sent anyone after him. That silence hurt worse than any pursuit would have.

Lin Yuè pulled his knees to his chest, resting his forehead on them.

He could still feel the ghost of Guàn Jǐngchén's hands on his skin.

The way he had whispered "I love you" while moving deep inside him.

The protective way he had held him after the scan results came back clean.

Every "I love you" had been real.

Every touch had been real.

And now it was all poisoned by the truth.

He had never meant to fall in love.

He had never meant to stay.

But he had.

And losing Guàn Jǐngchén felt like losing the only real thing he had ever had.

Back in the penthouse, Guàn Jǐngchén stood up and walked to the study. He opened the drawer where he kept the signed documents — the ones that made Lin Yuè part of his life legally, financially, officially.

He stared at Lin Yuè's elegant signature on every page.

Then he slowly tore them in half.

The sound was quiet, but it felt like ripping his own heart out.

He dropped the pieces on the desk and walked back to the bedroom.

The bed still smelled like him.

Guàn Jǐngchén lay down on Lin Yuè's side of the bed, pulling the pillow close to his chest.

He closed his eyes.

The hunter had caught the ghost.

But the man who had fallen in love with the boy didn't know how to let him go.

And the boy who had fallen in love with the hunter didn't know how to come back.

The silence between them stretched like a chasm.

Neither knew how — or if — it could ever be crossed again.
