Chapter 4 - Fish and Ash

CHAPTER 4

Fish and Ash

The System, he discovered on the fourth day, had opinions.

Not in the way that people had opinions — not with the particular self-righteousness of someone who has decided their preferences are principles. More the way a very good navigator has opinions about routes: grounded, informed, quietly insistent, always open to the argument that local conditions required adjustment but starting from a position of having already done the calculation.

He was at the docks by five-thirty. The water was flat and grey. A fishing vessel had come in overnight and the morning crew was unloading the haul — silver-bodied fish in long cascading slides into the ice-boxes, the smell of it clean and cold and somehow honest. Kai was on the crane today, not the floor. He liked the crane. The crane gave you height and height gave you perspective.

He had, in the four days since the awakening, begun to establish a routine with the System — which was, in itself, a somewhat remarkable sentence to construct in one's own mind, but then remarkable sentences had been accumulating at a rate he found professionally interesting.

Morning: check notifications. Note the day's gift countdown. Run a quick review of the interface's available information.

Work: keep the interface at the edge of his attention, available but not intrusive. The System, he had noticed, was respectful of focus. It did not interrupt. It waited.

Evening: review the day's TP and SP accumulation, read whatever new information the System had made available.

It was, he reflected, not entirely unlike managing a financial portfolio. Except the assets were adversity and the returns were power and the currency was something a centillion times larger than money and the stakes were — something the System had not yet fully disclosed, which was a detail he was tracking carefully.

He had three Tribulation Points. He had a thousand Skill Points. He had, as of this morning, zero cash balance in the System's terms (the conversion threshold was still incomprehensibly far away) and eleven dollars and forty cents in the physical world (he had paid Foss back, per his word).

He had a plan.

The plan was simple and it was the same plan he had been running, in various forms, since he was old enough to make plans: work hard, keep records, find the leverage point, wait for it to become accessible, apply force exactly there and nowhere else.

The difference now was that he had better instruments.

✦ ✦ ✦

The morning passed. The fish went into the boxes. The crane moved and settled and moved again. The dock was its usual self — noisy, purposeful, indifferent to everything that was not cargo weight and manifest numbers.

At eleven-fifteen, something changed.

He was in the middle of a lift — a standard pallet of sealed crates, nothing unusual about the weight or the manifest — when he felt it. Not the cold of the first night and not the warmth of the gift claiming, but something sharper. Attention. The specific sensation of being watched by something that was not human.

He did not look up. He had learned, a long time ago, that the immediate response to feeling watched was almost never the right one.

He completed the lift. He set the pallet down. He checked the manifest mark. He stepped back from the crane controls.

And then he looked.

There was nothing unusual in his field of view. The dock floor, the vessels at berth, the other crane operators, Briggs with his clipboard, two harbour authority officials who had been arguing about dock fees since mid-morning.

But the System interface had changed.

⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧

ALERT — CLASSIFICATION: INFORMATIONAL

EXTERNAL SCAN DETECTED.

An unknown intelligence has briefly

assessed Host's location and vital signature.

Duration: 3.2 seconds.

Origin: UNCLASSIFIED (non-local).

Threat level: INDETERMINATE.

The System notes: this is not the first scan.

It is the first one Host was equipped to detect.

No action required at this time.

However: the System recommends Host begin

Body Path cultivation at earliest convenience.

A target that can be hurt is a vulnerability.

A target that cannot be hurt is a deterrent.

Kai read the notification carefully. He read it a second time. He paid particular attention to the phrase not the first scan.

Something had been watching him before the System gave him the tools to see it.

He did not find this alarming, precisely. He found it informative. It told him that he was not a random recipient of the System's attention — that there was, to use the System's own word, a bloodline, a history, a design in which he was already a component. It also told him that whatever had been watching him had apparently decided, at some point before last Tuesday night, that he was not yet worth an active response.

Good. He preferred to remain unremarkable for as long as it remained strategically useful.

He focused on the System's recommendation.

Body Path. Iron Body Cultivation. He had read about this in the tutorial — the first stage of physical development, a cultivation technique that had been waiting in the System's catalogue since the activation. He had not yet begun it because he had been waiting to understand the costs. Everything had costs. He was a person who read the fine print.

He opened the Body Path entry.

⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧

BODY PATH — STAGE 1: IRON BODY TEMPERING

DESCRIPTION: A foundational cultivation technique

that restructures the body at the cellular level.

Progressive strengthening of bones, tendons, and

muscle tissue. Begins with discomfort. Proceeds

through considerable pain. Ends in transformation.

COST TO UNLOCK: 500 SP

[Current balance: 1,000 SP — sufficient]

DURATION: Active practice required daily.

First results: 7-14 days.

Stage 1 completion: approximately 30 days

at consistent practice.

WARNING: The process is uncomfortable.

The System does not apologize for this.

Strength requires the honest application

of pressure. This is not punishment.

It is physics.

READY TO UNLOCK? [FOCUS TO CONFIRM]

He thought about the scan. He thought about the phrase a target that cannot be hurt is a deterrent.

He focused.

⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧

IRON BODY TEMPERING — UNLOCKED.

SP BALANCE: 500

FIRST SESSION: TONIGHT.

Duration: 30 minutes.

Location: Anywhere with space to breathe.

Method: The System will guide you.

Note: You have lived twenty-one years

in a body you were never permitted to trust.

That changes now.

He read that last line twice.

He had not expected the System to notice things like that. He had expected an interface — a mechanism, a ledger in the most literal sense. He had not expected whatever quality it was that had just observed, accurately and without drama, one of the most precise truths anyone had ever stated about his life.

He returned to work. He operated the crane through the rest of the morning shift with his customary steadiness, and the fish kept coming in their silver cascades, and the ice-boxes filled, and the harbour smelled of the sea and the smoke from the city behind it.

And underneath all of it, for the first time in twenty-one years, something in his body was leaning forward.
