Chapter 4 - Understanding My New World

Ash stared at the ceiling for a few long minutes. The voice inside his head finally grew quiet, leaving only the gentle creak of the wooden cradle and the distant song of birds outside the manor window. A blurry blue rectangle floated in his vision, its text hazy and difficult to parse. He strained his immature eyes and mind, catching fragments — "Status," "Level 1," "All Stats: 1." After several frustrating minutes of focused concentration, the window finally became readable.

**Status Window**

**Name:** Ash Nightlock

**Level:** 1

**Class:** None

**HP:** 12/12

**MP:** 8/8

**Strength:** 1

**Agility:** 1

**Vitality:** 1

**Intelligence:** 1

**Wisdom:** 1

**Luck:** 1

The realization drained what little energy his tiny body still held. *Level one… everything at the absolute bottom.* With a mental sigh, Ash let the exhaustion win and drifted back into sleep.

---

He woke up several hours later, nestled warmly beside his mother. Lady Nightlock noticed his stirring immediately. Her silver hair spilled like moonlight over her shoulders as she smiled down at him, those crimson-orange eyes glowing with pure affection.

"My sweet boy," she murmured.

She picked him up with practiced gentleness, cradling him against her chest. With a graceful motion, she lowered the neckline of her gown and began to breastfeed him. Ash accepted it quietly — his adult mind still found the situation surreal, but the comfort and nourishment were undeniable. After a few minutes, he released with a small burp. His mother chuckled softly, patting his back before pulling her dress back into place.

"Come, little one. There's someone special waiting for you."

She carried him through the sunlit corridor to the adjoining nursery where David and Marie waited. In Marie's arms, wrapped in a soft violet-trimmed blanket, was their daughter.

"Velvet," David said proudly, his cat ears perking up. "We named her Velvet."

The little girl turned her head at the sound of her name. Shiny violet eyes locked onto Ash with surprising clarity. There was something deeper in that gaze — a spark of recognition that sent a faint warmth through their shared bond.

Lady Nightlock gently laid Ash beside Velvet on the wide, cushioned play mat. The two infants faced each other, tiny limbs twitching. Velvet immediately reached out, her small fingers brushing Ash's cheek. A soft pulse traveled between them.

**Proximity Bonus Active: +30% shared experience gain**

**Mana Sense Fragment Progress: 12%**

Ash's mind buzzed. *She feels it too.*

Over the following months, the manor fell into a peaceful routine. Lord Nightlock spent his days managing the surrounding territories, while Lady Nightlock divided her time between caring for Ash and overseeing the household. David, ever loyal, balanced his duties as head servant with fatherhood.

Ash and Velvet became inseparable. Their mothers often placed them together, smiling at how the two babies seemed to communicate in their own silent way. While other infants cooed randomly, Ash and Velvet would stare at each other for long stretches, exchanging faint sparks of colored light when no one was watching — blue from him, violet from her.

One bright morning, as they lay on a blanket in the garden, Ash focused hard on his status window.

**[Skill Unlocked: Crawl (Passive – Lv.1)]**

**Effect:** Slightly improved limb coordination.

He tested it immediately, managing to shuffle forward a few inches. Velvet watched with wide eyes, then mimicked him, her movements surprisingly coordinated. The two babies ended up side by side under the shade of a flowering tree, giggling in their own baby language.

*This body is weak,* Ash thought, *but I'm progressing. Slowly.*

By the time they approached eight months old, small changes began appearing. Ash's silver hair had grown into soft tufts, and his crimson-orange eyes often glowed faintly when he concentrated. Velvet's violet gaze seemed to shimmer with latent magic. David once joked that the two children were "stealing each other's light," but Lady Nightlock only smiled knowingly.

One quiet afternoon, while the adults were occupied, Ash felt a stronger pull from the system.

**[Quest Update: Path of the Nightlock Heir]**

**Current Progress:** Infancy survival – Complete (Milestone)

**New Objective:** Awaken basic mana control before age 2.

**Reward:** First Stat Point Allocation + Hidden Skill

Velvet crawled closer and pressed her forehead against his, as she often did. A shared memory fragment flowed across their bond — a blurry image of silver-haired figures and warm safety. Ash sent back a feeling of determination. For the first time, a tiny blue sigil appeared on the back of his hand for a split second before vanishing.

The bond was deepening.

As evening fell and his mother lifted him for bedtime, Ash glanced back at Velvet being carried by Marie. The little girl waved her tiny hand, violet eyes sparkling.

*We're in this together,* Ash thought as sleep claimed him once more. *Whatever this world throws at us… we'll face it as Nightlock and Velvet.*

The manor slept peacefully, unaware that two souls — far older than their bodies — had already begun rewriting their destinies under its roof.
