Chapter 7 - The thing he never said

🌙 When Silence Finds You

Episode 7 — "The Thing He Never Said"

Some truths don't hurt because they're painful.

They hurt…

because they stayed silent too long.

That night—

Aarav didn't go to sleep immediately.

Not because his mind was restless.

Because it was finally too honest to escape.

The room was dark.

Silent.

Still.

But inside him—

something kept moving.

"…don't carry everything alone."

Meera's voice stayed with him.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

He sat on the floor beside his bed.

Phone in his hand again.

The same habit.

The same silence.

But tonight—

it felt different.

Because now he knew something dangerous:

he wanted to tell her.

Not everything.

Not yet.

But enough.

His thumb hovered over the old chat.

The unfinished one.

The person who waited.

The person he disappeared from.

He opened it fully for the first time in months.

Messages filled the screen.

Small conversations.

Half-finished jokes.

Late replies.

Then slower replies.

Then silence.

And finally—

the last message.

"I waited."

Aarav stared at it.

Longer than before.

Not avoiding it.

Not hiding from it.

Just… seeing it.

Fully.

"…I know," he whispered again.

But tonight—

the words didn't feel enough.

Morning came quietly.

Cloudier than usual.

The rooftop wind felt colder.

Sharper.

Like the day already knew something difficult was coming.

Aarav stood near the edge again.

But this time—

he wasn't thinking about silence.

He was thinking about honesty.

And honesty felt heavier.

"…if I tell her," he murmured quietly, "…everything changes."

The wind passed him.

No answer.

Just movement.

Class felt louder today.

Too loud.

Voices overlapping.

Chairs dragging.

Laughter hitting walls and returning.

But Aarav noticed only one thing.

The empty seat beside him.

And for the first time in days—

Meera was late.

He looked at the door once.

Then again.

Then stopped himself.

"You're waiting again."

The thought landed immediately.

And he hated how true it was.

A few more minutes passed.

Then—

the door slid open.

Meera walked in.

But something felt different immediately.

Not dramatic.

Subtle.

She looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Aarav noticed it instantly.

The way her eyes avoided the room.

The way her movements felt slower.

Like her thoughts were somewhere else.

She sat beside him quietly.

No greeting.

No small comment.

Just silence.

And somehow—

that silence felt heavier than any conversation they'd had.

"…you okay?" Aarav asked softly.

The question surprised even him.

Because he usually waited.

Observed.

Thought first.

But this came naturally.

Meera looked at him for a second.

Then away.

"…yeah."

Too quick.

Too light.

Not true.

Aarav noticed.

Of course he did.

"…that sounded convincing," he said quietly.

That almost made her smile.

Almost.

"…rough morning," she admitted.

A pause.

"…want to talk about it?"

Meera looked at him again.

And this time—

there was something vulnerable in her expression.

Something tired.

"…not yet," she said softly.

Aarav nodded.

No pushing.

No pressure.

Just understanding.

Because now—

he knew what it felt like to carry something silently.

Lunch was quieter than usual.

Not around them.

Between them.

Meera barely touched her food.

Aarav noticed that too.

He noticed everything now.

That was the problem.

"…you've been looking at me all day," she said softly.

Aarav looked away slightly.

"…have I?"

"…yeah."

A small pause.

"…why?"

He could've avoided it.

Given a smaller answer.

Something safe.

But today—

something inside him was tired of halfway truths.

"…because you look like you're trying not to disappear."

Silence.

Immediate.

Deep.

Meera stopped moving completely.

That sentence hit something.

He saw it.

"…that's a scary thing to notice," she whispered.

Aarav swallowed slightly.

"…I think I'm starting to notice scary things."

Their eyes held for a second longer than usual.

Not romantic.

Not soft.

Just… real.

After school—

rain started lightly.

Not heavy enough to run from.

Just enough to blur the streets slightly.

They walked slower beneath the gray sky.

Close.

Quiet.

The sound of rain filling spaces words normally would.

"…Aarav," Meera said softly.

He looked at her.

"…who were they?"

There it was.

Finally.

Not forced.

Not avoided.

Just… here.

Aarav's chest tightened.

Not panic.

Not fear.

Just memory.

The rain grew slightly stronger.

Tiny drops catching in her hair.

On his sleeves.

On the silence between them.

"…someone I thought I had more time with," he admitted quietly.

Meera listened carefully.

Not interrupting.

"…and then?"

Aarav looked ahead.

Eyes distant now.

Not because he was avoiding her.

Because he was seeing something old.

"…I kept waiting for the perfect thing to say."

A bitter breath escaped him.

"…and eventually there was nothing left to say."

The rain kept falling.

Soft.

Steady.

"…did you love them?" Meera asked quietly.

That question stopped everything inside him.

Not because he didn't know.

Because he had never said it out loud before.

"…I don't know," he admitted honestly.

A pause.

"…but losing them changed me."

Meera's expression softened slightly.

Not jealousy.

Not hurt.

Just understanding.

"…that's why you run before things become real," she said softly.

Aarav nodded faintly.

"…yeah."

Another pause.

Then—

for the first time—

Meera looked uncertain.

Not distant.

Not cold.

Just… fragile.

"…and what if this becomes real too?"

That question landed harder than anything else.

Because now—

he didn't have silence to hide behind.

Rain slid down the bus stop glass beside them.

Cars passed.

People moved.

But the moment stayed still.

Aarav looked at her fully.

No hesitation.

No escape.

"…it already is."

Meera's breath caught slightly.

Barely noticeable.

But enough.

"…and that doesn't scare you?" she asked softly.

Aarav let out a quiet laugh.

Not happy.

Not sad.

Just honest.

"…it terrifies me."

Silence.

Rain.

Heartbeats neither of them could slow down properly.

"But I think…" he said quietly, "…I'm more scared of losing this because I stayed silent again."

That was it.

The thing he never said before.

Not perfectly.

Not beautifully.

But truthfully.

Meera looked at him for a long moment.

Eyes softer now.

But emotional in a way they hadn't been before.

Then—

slowly—

she stepped closer.

Until there was almost no space left between them.

Not dramatic.

Not rushed.

Just intentional.

"…good," she whispered.

And for the first time—

Aarav didn't feel trapped by honesty.

He felt freed by it.

The rain continued around them.

Cold air.

Blurred lights.

A city still moving forward.

But inside that small bus stop—

something changed completely.

Some feelings don't become real when you touch someone.

They become real…

when you finally stop hiding from them.
