Chapter 3 - First Blood

The alley had gone silent, save for the soft drip of rain from the rooftops. Zara's pulse thudded in her ears, every nerve on fire. Her hands still pulsed with the strange energy she didn't yet understand, shadows curling like living snakes around her fingers.

Kai stepped closer, eyes never leaving her. "Focus," he said, voice low but firm. "Your power is alive. But you have to control it. Or it will control you."

Zara swallowed hard. Her body shook. "Control it? I can barely keep from… exploding!"

Kai sighed, as if he'd expected this. "Then let's begin."

Before she could ask what he meant, he raised his hand—and shadows leapt from the walls, twisting into jagged forms that moved toward her like weapons.

"Now!" Kai barked.

Panic surged, but instinct kicked in. Zara raised her hands. The shadows obeyed. They surged forward, striking at the incoming forms with violent precision.

She gasped. "I—did I just—?"

"Yes," Kai said, stepping around her. "And that's why they fear you. You're stronger than you realize."

The shadows hissed, curling around her like protective serpents. Zara's heart raced. She had felt the rush, the thrill, the fear—but something deeper, something ancient pulsed in the back of her mind.

Suddenly, one shadow broke formation—a jagged, claw-like figure lunging straight at her. Zara reacted instinctively, snapping her hand forward. The air split with a crack, and the shadow exploded into black mist.

Her knees buckled. "This… this is insane!" she gasped.

Kai watched her, his expression unreadable. "Insane is what happens when power awakens. But that is just the beginning."

Then came a sound—a soft, chilling whisper that wasn't Kai's. It slithered through the alley like smoke:

"Heir… you belong to us…"

Zara froze. Her shadows twitched violently, responding, striking at nothing visible. Her pulse spiked. "No… get out! Get out of me!"

Kai's eyes narrowed. "Listen to me. That voice… it's not real in the way you think. But it's powerful. It's testing you. Do not give it control."

Zara's breath came in ragged bursts. She clenched her fists, feeling the raw, surging energy threatening to spill out. And then—

A scream echoed from the end of the alley.

Zara's shadow shot forward like a bolt of black lightning, forming into a jagged, protective wall between her and the source of the scream.

Her heart slammed. She couldn't see who—or what—it was—but instinct screamed danger. The shadows surged, writhing around her like living armor.

Kai stepped beside her. "You feel it now," he said. "The power isn't just in your hands. It's in you. And it will fight for you… if you fight for it first."

Zara's chest heaved. The shadows coiled around her like a living cloak. Her eyes flared green, reflecting their movement. She knew, deep down, that nothing in her life had prepared her for this.

And yet… a spark of exhilaration shot through her.

She was alive. She was dangerous. And she was not going to run anymore.
