Chapter 113 - The Way He Looked At Him In Daylight

Late morning inside Xu Chen's bedroom after Xu Chen admits he wants the world to see Aum beside him.

The room went quiet after that confession.

Not startled quiet.

Something softer.

Aum looked at him steadily across the sunlight-warmed sheets, dark hair still slightly disordered from sleep while the distant sounds of Sanyuejie drifted upward through the open window.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that he had said the sentence without fear.

"I think I'm realizing I actually want the world to see you beside me now."

No hesitation.

No instinctive retreat afterward.

Just truth.

Aum's gaze softened immediately.

"You were afraid of that earlier."

Xu Chen exhaled quietly.

"Yeah."

"Why."

Xu Chen looked down briefly at the phone still resting loosely in his hand.

Then back at Aum.

"Because wanting someone privately feels safer than wanting them publicly."

The silence afterward deepened gently.

Aum listened carefully.

Xu Chen's voice lowered slightly.

"If something only exists inside a room…" A faint helpless smile touched his mouth. "You can pretend losing it won't destroy your entire life structure."

Aum became very still after hearing that.

Xu Chen immediately recognized the expression now:

emotion arriving too deeply for immediate response.

Then Aum asked softly:

"And now."

Xu Chen looked at him steadily.

"Now I think hiding you would feel worse."

God.

The honesty between them had become frighteningly effortless overnight.

Aum's fingers moved slowly once against the blanket between them.

Xu Chen noticed immediately.

Apparently observation truly had become mutual.

Then, very quietly:

"I would not want to be hidden from your life."

Xu Chen's chest physically hurt.

Because there it was again.

Not demand.

Not possessiveness.

Just quiet truth.

Xu Chen leaned forward instinctively and kissed him softly before another thought could interrupt.

Morning sunlight filled the room around them while Aum responded immediately, warmth unfolding gently between them once more.

Not urgent now.

Just close.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that kissing Aum in daylight felt different too.

More dangerous somehow.

Because now he could see every reaction clearly:

the slight shift in Aum's breathing,

the unconscious way he leaned closer afterward,

the tiny softness that entered his expression whenever Xu Chen touched him first.

Xu Chen pulled back only slightly.

"You know what's unfair?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"You somehow got more attractive after emotional honesty."

A faint pause.

"That outcome appears statistically irrelevant."

"It absolutely is not irrelevant."

Warmth touched Aum's face again.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted instantly.

Hopeless.

Absolutely hopeless.

The phone buzzed again between them.

Both looked downward automatically.

Meera:

I KNOW YOU READ MY MESSAGES.

Second message:

Xu Chen if you ignore me longer I WILL come to the villa.

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

Aum read over his shoulder this time.

"She appears determined."

"She's emotionally invasive."

"That description continues sounding affectionate."

"Unfortunately, yes."

Warm laughter escaped Aum quietly again.

Xu Chen stared at him helplessly.

"You really laugh more now."

Aum considered that carefully.

"I believe emotional safety increased involuntary positive responses."

Xu Chen pointed weakly toward him.

"See? That should not be romantic."

"But it affects you romantically."

"That is absolutely the issue."

The room softened around them again.

Outside, the sounds of Sanyuejie had grown louder now:

festival music,

voices,

movement from the old town awakening fully into celebration.

Reality was returning steadily.

Xu Chen realized they could not stay hidden in this room forever.

The thought should have saddened him.

Instead he found himself unexpectedly curious.

Curious what Aum would look like walking beside him through crowded streets now.

Curious how impossible it would become not touching him in public.

Curious whether other people would notice the way Xu Chen already oriented instinctively toward him.

Dangerous thoughts.

Aum studied him quietly.

"You are anticipating something."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"The festival."

Aum glanced toward the window briefly.

"The city sounds significantly more active."

"It gets worse later."

A faint pause.

"I would like to experience it with you."

The sentence entered Xu Chen softly.

Not because of the festival itself.

Because of with you.

Xu Chen's chest tightened warmly.

"You know," he murmured quietly, "humans usually ease into couple behavior more slowly."

Aum tilted his head slightly.

"We are behaving as a couple."

Xu Chen stopped breathing properly for one suspended second.

God.

The calm certainty in his voice nearly killed him instantly.

Xu Chen laughed weakly against the pillow.

"You absolutely cannot say things like that this casually."

"But it appears factually accurate."

Xu Chen covered his eyes briefly with one hand.

"I think my entire emotional system is permanently compromised now."

Aum gently pulled Xu Chen's hand away from his face.

Then looked at him with impossible steadiness in the warm morning light.

"I think mine is too."

The silence afterward felt enormous.

Not heavy.

Certain.

Then—

another message arrived.

Meera:

Also if neither of you answers in five minutes I'm assuming you confessed dramatically and forgot civilization exists.

Xu Chen stared at the screen.

Then very slowly looked at Aum.

Aum looked back at him.

A faint pause.

Then, with complete seriousness:

"She appears disturbingly accurate."
