Later that same morning inside Xu Chen's bedroom.
Xu Chen woke slowly.
Not abruptly.
Not disoriented.
Warmly.
That realization reached him before consciousness fully did.
Warm sunlight filtered softly through the curtains now, brighter than before, spreading pale gold across the blankets and pillows while faint sounds from Dali drifted upward through the mountain air outside.
Somewhere below the villa, scooters passed intermittently along the road.
Festival-day voices echoed faintly in the distance.
A dog barked once.
Morning had fully arrived.
And for the first time in years, Xu Chen did not wake to emptiness.
The awareness settled into him gradually.
Then all at once.
Warmth beside him.
Steady breathing.
Fingers loosely intertwined with his beneath the blankets.
Xu Chen's eyes opened properly.
Aum was asleep beside him.
The sight hit Xu Chen directly in the chest.
God.
Morning light softened everything about him. Without the constant alertness in his expression, Aum looked younger somehow. Peaceful in a way Xu Chen had never seen before Earth forced him into survival.
One arm remained stretched loosely toward Xu Chen even in sleep, their hands still connected exactly as they had been hours earlier.
Xu Chen stared quietly.
Then realized something that nearly destroyed him emotionally:
Aum had fallen asleep still holding onto him.
Not tightly.
Not fearfully.
Instinctively.
Xu Chen felt warmth spread slowly through his chest.
Careful not to wake him, he shifted slightly on the pillow to study him more closely.
The loose dark shirt.
The soft rise and fall of breathing.
The faint crease near his brow that only disappeared completely whenever Xu Chen touched him.
Xu Chen suddenly understood with terrifying certainty that he could spend years memorizing mornings like this.
The thought felt dangerous.
It also felt true.
Aum moved slightly in sleep.
Xu Chen froze automatically.
But instead of waking fully, Aum's fingers tightened faintly around his hand before relaxing again, body shifting subtly closer beneath the blankets like proximity itself had already become unconscious behavior.
Xu Chen's entire nervous system collapsed instantly.
"Oh, that's unfair," he whispered softly to himself.
Aum made a quiet sound in response.
Still asleep.
Xu Chen stared at him helplessly.
The room itself felt transformed now in daylight. Yesterday this had simply been his bedroom—clean, functional, emotionally neutral.
Today it looked lived in.
Occupied.
There was another person's warmth inside the sheets.
Another person's breathing inside the silence.
Another person unconsciously reaching for him in sleep.
Xu Chen realized suddenly that loneliness left physical traces when it disappeared.
Aum shifted again slightly, dark hair falling partly across his forehead now.
Without thinking, Xu Chen lifted his free hand carefully and brushed the strands back gently.
The movement was automatic.
Tender enough to scare him a little.
Aum's expression softened immediately afterward even in sleep.
Xu Chen's chest hurt.
No one should have looked this trusting near him.
Especially not someone who crossed galaxies carrying enough fear and isolation to make Earth itself feel hostile at first.
And now—
now Aum slept beside him like staying had become natural.
Xu Chen lay there quietly for several long moments just watching him while sunlight continued moving slowly across the room.
He realized eventually that he was smiling.
Hopeless.
Absolutely hopeless.
Then Aum spoke softly without opening his eyes.
"You are staring again."
Xu Chen startled hard enough that the mattress shifted beneath them.
"What the—"
A faint softness touched Aum's mouth before he even opened his eyes fully.
"You changed breathing pattern."
Xu Chen stared at him in disbelief.
"You cannot possibly be conscious enough for that sentence already."
Aum blinked slowly awake.
"I woke approximately forty-three seconds ago."
"That is deeply horrifying information."
Warmth entered Aum's expression immediately.
Sleep softened his voice now, lower and quieter than usual.
Xu Chen was genuinely not strong enough for this version of him.
Aum's gaze settled fully onto Xu Chen's face.
And stopped there.
Not awkwardly.
Contentedly.
Xu Chen suddenly became acutely aware that they were lying very close together beneath tangled blankets in full morning sunlight after spending the entire night emotionally dismantling each other.
The realization hit late.
And hard.
Aum noticed immediately.
"You became nervous."
Xu Chen covered his eyes briefly with one hand.
"This situation keeps reoccurring."
"You appear consistently affected by proximity."
"You appear consistently responsible for it."
A faint pause.
"That appears accurate."
Xu Chen laughed softly despite himself.
God.
He was impossible even half asleep.
Aum's thumb brushed slowly once against Xu Chen's hand beneath the blanket.
The tiny movement sent warmth directly through Xu Chen's chest.
Then Aum spoke again quietly.
"You remained here."
The sentence was simple.
But Xu Chen heard the deeper meaning immediately anyway.
You didn't disappear.
His chest tightened painfully.
Xu Chen lowered his hand from his eyes and looked at him steadily.
"I said I would."
Silence.
Warm morning silence.
Aum's gaze softened further afterward in a way that made Xu Chen feel simultaneously wanted and trusted in terrifying proportions.
Then, very softly:
"I think waking beside you may become biologically addictive."
Xu Chen actually laughed out loud.
"There is absolutely no way that was accidental anymore."
"I am making an observational statement."
"You are flirting scientifically."
Aum thought seriously about that.
Then answered:
"That may be occurring."
