Chapter 107 - The First Time Morning Felt Gentle

In the early morning hours inside Xu Chen's bedroom.

The room had become fully morning now.

Soft gold sunlight stretched across the floorboards near the window, dissolving the last traces of night from the walls and blankets while Dali slowly awakened beyond the mountain roads below.

Xu Chen still stood close enough to feel Aum's warmth without effort.

And somehow—

neither of them had moved away yet.

Not truly.

Aum's hand remained lightly against his jaw after speaking.

"I already decided to remember you permanently."

The sentence lingered quietly inside Xu Chen's chest like something alive.

God.

No one should have been allowed to sound that sincere at sunrise.

Xu Chen laughed softly under his breath, though the sound carried too much warmth to qualify as actual exasperation anymore.

"You really don't believe in emotional moderation, huh."

Aum considered this carefully.

"I do not think my feelings for you developed moderately."

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

"There it is again."

"What."

"The terrifying honesty."

A faint softness touched Aum's expression immediately afterward.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted on instinct.

Hopeless.

Completely hopeless.

The room fell quiet once more, but now the silence carried the softness of exhaustion settling over both of them properly for the first time all night.

Xu Chen could see it in Aum too now:

the slower blinking,

the calmer posture,

the way his touch lingered longer and gentler between movements.

They were both running on emotional collapse and almost no sleep.

And somehow Xu Chen still did not want the night to end.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly once beneath his jaw.

"You are becoming sleepy again."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"You say that like you're monitoring a weakening lifeform."

"You would prefer different phrasing."

"I would prefer you stop sounding unintentionally intimate every five minutes."

"That outcome appears unlikely."

Xu Chen laughed quietly.

The sound echoed warmly through the room.

And suddenly he realized again how different this felt from every other morning of his adult life.

Usually mornings meant:

coffee,

emails,

reports,

environmental models,

meetings,

silence.

Today meant:

Aum barefoot in his bedroom,

sunlight touching his face,

warm hands,

soft laughter,

love spoken aloud without fear.

The contrast felt almost unreal.

Xu Chen looked toward the bed finally.

Then back at Aum.

The atmosphere shifted gently.

Not heavily now.

Just aware.

Aum noticed immediately.

"You are considering sleep logistics."

Xu Chen stared at him.

"You genuinely cannot stop narrating reality."

"I am helping."

"You are absolutely not helping."

Warmth touched Aum's face again.

Xu Chen realized suddenly he wanted to spend years learning every variation of that expression.

The thought hit too deeply.

Xu Chen stepped closer automatically.

Aum responded the same way.

Like they were already synchronized now.

Xu Chen rested his forehead lightly against Aum's shoulder with a soft exhale.

"I think we emotionally overloaded ourselves tonight."

Aum's hand moved slowly through his hair again.

"That appears accurate."

"And somehow I still don't regret any of it."

"I do not regret it either."

The answer came immediately.

Certain.

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

God.

Everything about Aum felt certain once he understood his own feelings.

No games.

No emotional withholding.

No strategic distance.

Just truth.

Xu Chen realized suddenly how exhausting human relationships had always felt before this because so much of them depended on guessing.

With Aum, nothing hid.

The honesty terrified him sometimes.

It also made him feel safer than anyone else ever had.

Aum spoke softly near his ear after a quiet moment.

"You are relaxing again."

Xu Chen smiled against his shoulder.

"That's because your heartbeat is unfairly calming."

Silence.

Then Aum asked carefully:

"You enjoy hearing it."

Xu Chen lifted his head slightly.

"Yes."

Aum became still for one brief second.

Then very quietly:

"I experienced the same reaction earlier while listening to yours."

Xu Chen's chest physically hurt again.

No one had ever spoken to him like this before.

Not with this level of simple emotional clarity.

Xu Chen touched his face gently.

"You know what I think the real problem is?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"I think we got attached way too fast."

The silence afterward softened instead of tightening.

Aum thought about it seriously.

Then answered:

"I do not think emotional timing invalidates emotional truth."

Xu Chen stared at him helplessly.

"That sounded like something people spend years learning in therapy."

"I do not know what therapy is structurally."

Xu Chen laughed hard enough to bend forward briefly against him.

Warm sunlight filled the room around them while Aum held him carefully, one hand steady against his back like keeping Xu Chen close had already become instinctive.

The laughter faded slowly.

But the warmth stayed.

Always the warmth now.

Xu Chen realized suddenly he was genuinely exhausted.

Emotionally full.

Physically heavy.

Completely undone.

Aum noticed immediately.

"You should sleep."

Xu Chen sighed quietly.

"You're probably right."

A pause.

Then softer:

"But I don't want you far away."

The honesty entered the room naturally now.

No embarrassment remained between them.

Aum's expression softened immediately.

"I was not planning distance."

God.

Xu Chen leaned forward and kissed him one final slow time in the soft morning light, warmth unfolding gently between them while the city below continued waking gradually beyond the mountains.

No desperation remained anymore.

Only closeness.

When they separated slightly afterward, Aum rested his forehead against Xu Chen's and whispered softly:

"I think this was the best night of my life."

And terrifyingly—

Xu Chen realized it had probably become his too.
