Chapter 104 - The Light That Found Them Together

In the early dawn hours inside Xu Chen's bedroom.

The kiss after that confession felt almost unbearably soft.

Xu Chen could feel dawn arriving around them now.

Not fully.

Just traces of it.

The mountains beyond the curtains had begun dissolving slowly from darkness into pale blue-grey silhouettes, and the bedside lamp no longer carried the entire weight of the room alone.

Morning was finding them together.

The realization settled somewhere painfully deep inside Xu Chen's chest.

Aum kissed him carefully, one hand warm against the side of his face while the other remained loosely at his waist like letting go had stopped feeling structurally correct sometime around midnight.

Xu Chen understood the feeling completely.

The night had changed them.

Not dramatically.

Permanently.

Aum pulled back slightly afterward, forehead resting lightly against Xu Chen's.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence itself had become intimate now.

Xu Chen could hear their breathing blending softly together in the quiet room while early dawn light slowly stretched across the floorboards near the window.

Aum looked at him carefully.

"You became emotional again."

Xu Chen laughed softly under his breath.

"You know, at this point I think that phrase genuinely qualifies as flirting."

A faint pause.

"I was not aware I had begun flirting consistently."

"You absolutely have."

Warmth touched Aum's expression again.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted instantly.

Hopeless.

Completely hopeless.

Xu Chen touched his wrist lightly.

"You know what's terrifying?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"I think I'm already addicted to being understood by you."

The silence afterward deepened gently.

Aum's fingers moved slowly against his waist once.

"I think I understand you because I pay attention continuously."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"That somehow makes it worse."

"Clarify."

"You notice everything." Xu Chen's voice softened. "Most people only notice the loud parts of someone."

Aum became very still after hearing that.

Xu Chen saw the realization reach him.

Then very quietly:

"I notice the quiet parts most."

God.

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly because there genuinely needed to be laws against this man speaking before sunrise.

When he opened them again, Aum was still watching him with that same impossible attentiveness.

Not consuming him.

Listening to him with his eyes somehow.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that this might be the first time in his life another person had ever made him feel emotionally visible without making him feel exposed.

The difference mattered enormously.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly beneath his jaw.

"You are overprocessing again."

Xu Chen laughed weakly.

"Yes."

"Why."

Xu Chen looked toward the window briefly.

The sky beyond the curtains had lightened further now, soft silver-blue touching the edges of the mountains beyond Dali.

"Because this feels important enough to remember forever."

The sentence entered the room quietly.

Aum's entire expression softened afterward.

Then he asked softly:

"Would that be negative."

Xu Chen looked back at him immediately.

"No." A faint smile touched his mouth. "I think it might be the opposite."

Silence settled warmly around them again.

Neither seemed willing to move very far.

Xu Chen became aware suddenly of how naturally their bodies kept arranging themselves toward each other now. Every pause ended with closeness. Every conversation ended with touch.

As though some instinct deeper than thought had already accepted this as home.

The realization hit hard.

Aum noticed the shift instantly.

"You changed breathing pattern."

Xu Chen actually laughed out loud this time.

"There it is. The sentence returns."

"It remains accurate."

"That phrase is going to follow me psychologically for the rest of my life."

Aum considered this carefully.

"I would not object to remaining present psychologically for the rest of your life."

Xu Chen froze.

Completely.

God.

The room fell silent around them.

Not awkward.

Too full.

Xu Chen stared at him helplessly.

"You absolutely cannot say things like that at five in the morning."

"The current time is 05:12."

"That somehow makes it worse."

A faint softness touched Aum's mouth again.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that he loved making Aum smile.

Not because it was rare anymore.

Because every smile still looked slightly surprising on him, like happiness remained something he was learning in real time.

Xu Chen touched his face gently.

"You look happier tonight."

Aum became quiet briefly.

Then answered honestly.

"I think I am happier than I have ever been."

The confession entered Xu Chen softly.

And stayed there.

No defenses remained after that.

Xu Chen leaned forward and kissed him slowly, warmth unfolding quietly between them while dawn continued brightening beyond the windows.

The kiss deepened naturally.

Sleepily.

Neither of them possessed the energy for restraint anymore.

Only closeness.

Aum's hand slid slowly through Xu Chen's hair again while Xu Chen moved instinctively nearer until he could feel the steady rhythm of Aum's heartbeat through the thin fabric between them.

The sensation calmed something inside him immediately.

Aum noticed.

"You relax when you hear my heartbeat."

Xu Chen buried his face briefly against his shoulder with a helpless laugh.

"You genuinely monitor me like an emotionally compromised research project."

"I monitor you because I care about you."

The answer came so quickly.

So simply.

Xu Chen's chest physically hurt.

Because that was it, wasn't it?

Not fascination.

Not dependency.

Not cosmic destiny.

Care.

Aum cared about him in a thousand small continuous ways.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that this was what made him feel safe enough to love him back completely.

Not the intensity.

The consistency.

The room had grown brighter now, dawn fully arriving over the mountains beyond Dali.

Soft natural light began slowly overtaking the bedside lamp, painting pale silver across the blankets behind them.

Aum glanced once toward the window.

Then back at Xu Chen immediately.

Xu Chen smiled faintly at that instinctive return of attention.

"What."

Aum's gaze remained steady on him.

"I think this is the first sunrise I have not wanted to spend alone."
