Chapter 101 - The Sound Of Him Laughing

Aum looked down at Xu Chen lying dramatically across the mattress.

Then, unexpectedly—

he laughed.

Not loudly.

Not even fully.

Just a quiet, startled sound that escaped him before he could suppress it.

Xu Chen froze immediately.

Because he had never heard that sound before.

Aum seemed to realize it a second later too.

His expression shifted almost imperceptibly.

Xu Chen pushed himself upright slowly on his elbows, staring at him.

"You laugh."

Aum blinked once.

"Yes."

"No, I mean—" Xu Chen sat up further, visibly stunned now. "You actually laugh."

A faint pause.

"I was unaware that outcome required confirmation."

Xu Chen stared at him helplessly.

"That might genuinely be the first real laugh I've heard from you."

The room changed around them immediately afterward.

Something softened.

Not the intimacy.

Something deeper than that.

Aum looked faintly uncertain now beneath Xu Chen's attention, which somehow made the moment infinitely more dangerous emotionally.

Xu Chen's chest tightened hard.

"Do that again."

Aum tilted his head slightly.

"Laughter does not usually occur on command."

"You absolutely sounded offended while saying that."

"I was clarifying."

Xu Chen laughed softly himself this time, sitting fully upright on the bed now while Aum remained standing in front of him beneath the warm bedside light.

God.

Looking at him from this angle felt unfair somehow.

The loose dark fabric of Aum's shirt.

The slightly disordered hair from hours of Xu Chen's hands in it.

The softness around his expression that existed only tonight.

Xu Chen suddenly realized he would recognize this version of Aum anywhere now.

Not the alien.

Not the impossible astrophysicist.

This one.

The one who looked relieved whenever Xu Chen chose him back.

Aum stepped closer again instinctively.

Xu Chen's body relaxed immediately at the movement.

Aum noticed.

"You continue doing that."

Xu Chen sighed dramatically.

"Yes, my nervous system has joined your side. We've established this."

A faint softness touched Aum's mouth again.

Xu Chen pointed immediately.

"There. That too."

"That expression."

"You keep smiling now."

Aum became still briefly.

Then, quietly:

"You are causing that."

The honesty nearly killed Xu Chen instantly.

He reached for Aum without thinking.

Aum moved between his knees automatically the moment Xu Chen's hands settled at his waist, like proximity itself had already become the most natural thing in the world to him.

Xu Chen looked up at him from the edge of the bed.

Dangerous mistake.

Because Aum immediately touched his hair again.

Slow fingers sliding through the strands near his temple with impossible gentleness.

Xu Chen closed his eyes on instinct.

"There it is," Aum murmured softly.

Xu Chen opened one eye weakly.

"What."

"The relaxation response."

Xu Chen laughed helplessly under his breath.

"You are absolutely impossible to survive."

"That statement no longer appears entirely negative."

"It's not negative at all." Xu Chen's voice softened. "That's what's terrifying."

The room fell quiet again.

Warm quiet.

The kind that no longer needed filling constantly.

Aum's fingers continued moving slowly through his hair while Xu Chen sat between his arms at the edge of the bed feeling more emotionally compromised than any human being had a right to feel.

And somehow—

safe.

That word kept returning tonight.

Safe in his room.

Safe in Aum's hands.

Safe wanting him this much.

Xu Chen realized suddenly how rare that combination actually was.

Aum watched him carefully.

"You became thoughtful."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"I was thinking about how dangerous it is that you figured out this hair thing."

Aum processed that instantly.

"You enjoy when I touch your hair."

"Yes."

A pause.

"Very much."

Warmth moved visibly through Aum's expression afterward.

Not smugness.

Satisfaction.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted immediately.

Hopeless.

Absolutely hopeless.

Aum's hand slid slowly from his hair down along the side of his face instead, fingertips brushing lightly beneath his jaw.

Xu Chen leaned into the touch unconsciously again.

Aum noticed immediately.

"You trust touch very quickly now."

Xu Chen looked up at him quietly.

"I trust your touch specifically."

The sentence entered the room softly.

Aum became still again afterward.

Xu Chen saw the exact moment it affected him deeply.

God.

Everything affected him deeply tonight.

Aum's voice lowered.

"That distinction matters."

Xu Chen touched his wrist lightly.

"Yeah," he whispered. "It really does."

Silence settled warmly around them once more.

Outside the windows, the mountain night remained dark and still. The festival below the city had faded almost completely now, leaving only occasional distant sounds drifting faintly upward through the trees.

Inside the room, exhaustion had begun softening both of them further.

Xu Chen could feel it in the slower movements.

The quieter voices.

The way neither of them seemed interested in moving anywhere except closer.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly against Xu Chen's cheek.

"You are falling asleep gradually."

Xu Chen laughed softly.

"I think you emotionally exhausted me."

"That outcome appears mutual."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"You know what's strange?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"I used to hate the idea of someone seeing me like this."

Aum listened silently.

Xu Chen's gaze drifted downward briefly.

"Tired. Unfiltered. Wanting someone this openly." He looked back up slowly. "But somehow you make it feel…" He paused once. "Easy."

The silence afterward hurt gently.

Aum stepped closer until Xu Chen's forehead rested lightly against his chest.

Then very softly:

"You make existing feel easier for me too."

Xu Chen closed his eyes immediately.

God.

There were genuinely no defenses left anymore.

Aum's hand moved slowly through his hair again while Xu Chen sat there between his knees listening to the steady rhythm of his breathing.

And suddenly Xu Chen realized something terrifyingly simple:

he already knew what waking up beside Aum tomorrow was going to feel like.

Warm.
