Chapter 94 - The Night Slowed Around Them

Inside Xu Chen's bedroom, the kiss softened before it deepened.

Xu Chen felt the exact transition happen.

Aum's hand remained warm against the side of his neck while their foreheads brushed lightly between breaths, and somewhere during those quiet seconds the urgency between them shifted into something slower.

Something heavier.

Not less intense.

More intimate.

Xu Chen had kissed people before in his life.

But never like this.

Never while feeling as though another person was learning him emotionally and physically at the same time.

Aum kissed him with complete attention.

No distraction.

No performance.

No impatience.

Just him.

Xu Chen felt warmth spread through his chest so steadily it almost hurt.

His fingers remained tangled loosely in Aum's hair while the soft bedside lamp cast amber light across the room around them. Shadows moved gently against the walls whenever mountain wind brushed the curtains near the window.

Everything felt strangely suspended.

Aum pulled back only slightly afterward, their mouths still close enough that Xu Chen could feel warmth every time he breathed.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence itself had become intimate now.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly once against the side of Xu Chen's neck.

Xu Chen inhaled softly.

Aum noticed.

"You continue responding strongly to touch."

Xu Chen laughed quietly against his mouth.

"You are genuinely committed to this scientific commentary thing, huh."

"I enjoy observing your reactions."

"That should not sound as attractive as it does."

Aum became still briefly.

Then, softly:

"I am glad you react to me at all."

The sentence hit Xu Chen straight through the chest.

God.

It was impossible surviving someone this honest.

Xu Chen touched his face gently again.

"You know what the problem is?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"You say things like that," Xu Chen murmured softly, "and suddenly I want to kiss you again instead of functioning like a normal adult."

A faint pause.

"Is that undesirable."

Xu Chen smiled helplessly.

"No."

Aum visibly relaxed again.

That tiny reaction nearly emotionally destroyed Xu Chen on the spot.

Because Aum still looked relieved every single time Xu Chen chose him back.

As though some part of him still could not fully believe this was real.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that despite all of Aum's intelligence, despite the impossible astrophysics and advanced civilization and emotional composure—

he was vulnerable here too.

Especially here.

Especially with Xu Chen.

The understanding softened something deep inside him.

Xu Chen kissed him again before thinking further.

Slow.

Warm.

Aum responded instantly now, one hand sliding carefully around Xu Chen's waist while Xu Chen leaned closer automatically, their bodies fitting together with frightening naturalness.

The bedroom felt quieter with every passing minute.

Safer.

The air itself seemed warmer around them now.

Xu Chen became aware suddenly of how long it had been since anyone else occupied this room beside him at night.

Years.

Actual years.

Work had consumed most of his life gradually without him noticing. Research, environmental projects, field studies, conferences, reports. The villa became somewhere he returned to rather than lived inside emotionally.

Then Aum arrived.

And somehow silence itself changed shape around him.

Xu Chen pulled back slightly after the kiss, breathing uneven now.

Aum watched him carefully.

"You are thinking deeply again."

Xu Chen laughed softly.

"Yeah."

"Should I be concerned."

"No." His fingers brushed lightly along Aum's jaw. "Honestly, I think I'm just realizing how much you changed my life already."

Aum became very still.

The words affected him instantly.

Xu Chen saw it clearly now every time emotion reached him too deeply—his entire body seemed to quiet first, like internal systems pausing to reorganize themselves around the feeling.

Xu Chen's chest tightened warmly.

Aum looked at him with impossible openness.

"You changed mine first."

The answer came so quickly.

So honestly.

Xu Chen stopped breathing properly again.

"Aum…"

"When I arrived on Earth," Aum continued softly, "survival was statistical." His hand tightened faintly against Xu Chen's waist. "Then adaptation became necessary." A pause. "Now my entire understanding of existence has reorganized itself around one person."

Xu Chen's eyes closed briefly.

"Oh, that is genuinely unfair."

Aum blinked once slowly. "Clarify."

"You cannot say things that romantic accidentally."

"I am not speaking accidentally."

God.

Xu Chen laughed weakly and leaned forward until his forehead rested against Aum's shoulder.

Warmth flooded through him everywhere.

Not just desire now.

Something frighteningly close to belonging.

Aum's hand moved slowly up and down his back once.

The gesture was simple.

It nearly broke Xu Chen emotionally anyway.

No one had ever held him like this before.

Not carefully enough to listen to his breathing while doing it.

Xu Chen realized suddenly how touch-starved he had actually been all these years without recognizing it consciously.

Aum seemed to understand instinctively.

His fingers continued moving slowly through Xu Chen's hair now while silence wrapped around them softly.

Xu Chen closed his eyes.

The room no longer felt like a place built for solitude.

Aum's voice came quietly near his ear.

"You relax most when physical contact remains continuous."

Xu Chen laughed softly against his shoulder.

"You are impossible."

"That statement no longer appears negative."

"No," Xu Chen admitted quietly. "Not even slightly."

They stayed like that for several minutes.

No urgency.

No pressure.

Just warmth shared quietly in the middle of the night while Dali slept below the mountain.

Eventually Xu Chen lifted his head again slowly.

Aum looked at him immediately.

Always immediately.

Xu Chen's chest tightened.

"You really pay attention to me constantly, huh."

"Yes."

"No embarrassment admitting that anymore?"

Aum thought seriously before answering.

"I believe embarrassment becomes less structurally relevant once emotional certainty stabilizes."

Xu Chen stared at him.

Then laughed helplessly.

"That sounded like an alien astrophysicist trying to explain devotion mathematically."

Aum's gaze softened faintly.

"It was the closest approximation available."

The tenderness in the answer made Xu Chen kiss him again instinctively.

Aum responded immediately, warmth deepening between them once more while the bedside lamp continued glowing softly against the darkened room.

Somewhere beyond the curtains, mountain wind moved gently through the trees.

Inside the room, Xu Chen realized with terrifying clarity that he no longer wanted a future that did not contain this.
