Chapter 1 - Between silence And You

Chapter 1: The Boy Who Wouldn't Talk

Rain scratched at the classroom windows in a steady rhythm.

Everyone else filled the room with noise, laughing, complaining, tossing words around like they were weightless.

Except him.

Ren Aoyama sat tucked into the back corner, gaze drifting over empty space. Silent. Always silent. People whispered that he was cold, distant, not worth approaching. The rumor sounded sharp.

The reality was smaller.

He just had no idea how to exist beside other people.

Until.

"Hey. You're in my seat."

Ren lifted his head, slow, like it hurt.

Kaito Mori stood there with messy black hair, a lazy smile, and an energy that acted like every place already belonged to him. The kind of person who walked into your life without knocking.

Ren stared. "…Sorry."

He shifted, ready to get up, but Kaito let his bag drop and slid into the chair next to him instead.

"Actually," Kaito said, grinning as he leaned back, "I think I like it here."

Ren's brows pulled together. "Why?"

Kaito rolled one shoulder. "You look interesting.

Chapter 2: Noise and Quiet

Days rolled on.

Kaito talked. About classes, about games, about nothing at all.

Ren listened.

At first, it grated on his nerves.

Then it just felt weird.

After that, something else crept in. Warm. Steady.

Comfort.

"Do you ever smile?" Kaito asked one afternoon as they walked home, shoes kicking at the same cracks in the pavement.

Ren shoved his hands deeper into his pockets. "Not really."

"Then I'll make you."

Ren shot him a sideways look. "Why do you even care?"

Kaito didn't reply right away.

Instead, he drifted closer. Close enough that their sleeves brushed.

"Because when you look at me," he murmured, "it feels like I'm the only one who exists for you."

Ren's heart stumbled.

He didn't have a name for that feeling.

He just knew it made his chest tight.

So he put space between them.

"Don't say stuff like that."

Chapter 3: The Distance

The next morning, Ren treated him like empty air.

No glance. No pause by the lockers.

Nothing.

Kaito caught it right away.

Of course he did.

When the final bell rang, he moved faster, catching Ren's wrist before he could slip out the door.

"Are you avoiding me?"

Ren's answer came soft. "I don't do… this kind of thing."

Kaito's fingers tightened, just a bit.

"This kind of thing?" he echoed. "You mean actually giving a damn about someone?"

Ren shook his head. "It doesn't matter. It never lasts."

"Then why do you look like it hurts?" Kaito asked, voice low.

That landed.

Ren's eyes shook for a heartbeat, then he turned away.

"…Because I don't know how to make people stay."

The room went quiet.

Then, without warning,

Kaito tugged him forward and wrapped his arms around him.

Quick. Solid. Warm.

"Then don't worry about that," he murmured against Ren's shoulder.

"Just be here. That's enough for me."

Chapter 4: The First Crack

This time, Ren didn't shove him off.

His hands hovered in the air, lost.

Then, slowly,

His fingers caught on Kaito's shirt.

Barely holding.

"I've never done anything like this," Ren said, almost embarrassed.

Kaito smiled against his ear. "Perfect."

"…How is that perfect?"

"Means I get to be your first."

Ren went rigid.

"…You know how that sounds, right."

Kaito snorted. "Yeah, yeah, I heard it too. Still true though."

Something eased.

For the first time,

Ren smiled.

Tiny. Lopsided. Honest.

Kaito saw it.

And he sank a little further, with no intention of climbing back out.
