Chapter 20 - 20---Rumor

The rain started just as the study group ended.

Not heavily.

Just enough to turn the campus sidewalks silver beneath the streetlights.

Emma stood beneath the entrance awning, watching the rain fall.

Ethan stood beside her.

Neither had said much since they left the study room.

Not because they were uncomfortable.

Because they weren't sure what to say.

Something had changed between them tonight.

They both knew it.

"You didn't bring an umbrella," Ethan said.

Emma glanced at him.

"Neither did you."

"I wasn't planning on getting caught in the rain."

"Neither was I."

He smiled.

"Brilliant planning."

"Thank you."

"That wasn't a compliment."

"I accepted it as one."

He laughed softly.

Emma smiled.

For a few seconds, everything felt easy again.

Then Ethan looked at the rain.

"I can walk you back."

Emma hesitated.

"You'll get wet."

"So will you."

"That's not very convincing."

"It's not supposed to be."

She laughed.

"Fine."

They stepped into the rain.

Within seconds, droplets collected in Emma's hair.

She tried to shield herself with her books.

Ethan noticed.

"Give me those."

"What?"

"Your books."

"I'm fine."

"Emma."

She sighed and handed them over.

Ethan held them against his chest, leaving one hand free.

"You know," Emma said, "you don't have to act like my bodyguard."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm carrying books."

"Exactly."

He looked at her.

"Would you rather I let them get soaked?"

"No."

"Then you're welcome."

She smiled.

They continued walking.

Their footsteps echoed softly against the wet pavement.

Emma glanced at him.

His hair was soaked now, tiny droplets running down his forehead.

She laughed.

"What?"

"You look ridiculous."

He raised an eyebrow.

"So do you."

She touched her hair.

"How bad?"

"Pretty bad."

"Great."

"You still look nice."

Emma stopped walking.

Ethan took another step before realizing she wasn't beside him.

He turned.

"What?"

She stared at him.

"What did you say?"

His expression changed.

"Nothing."

"No. You said something."

"I said your hair looks ridiculous."

"Before that."

He looked away.

"I don't remember."

"You do."

A small smile tugged at his mouth.

"Maybe."

Emma walked closer.

"You think I look nice?"

Ethan met her eyes.

"In general."

"In general?"

"Don't make this difficult."

"You started it."

"I know."

She smiled.

Then they continued walking.

Neither noticed how close they were now.

---

They reached Emma's dorm.

She stood beneath the covered entrance and turned toward him.

"Thanks."

"For walking you?"

"For the books."

He handed them back.

Their fingers touched.

Neither moved immediately.

Emma looked at his hand.

Then his eyes.

"Ethan."

"Yeah?"

"About earlier..."

He knew exactly what she meant.

The study group.

Lucas.

The jealousy.

He nodded.

"What about it?"

"You said you didn't like seeing me with him."

"Yeah."

"Why?"

His jaw tightened.

He knew this moment would come.

He just hadn't expected it to come so soon.

"Because..."

He stopped.

Emma waited.

"Because I care about you."

"I know."

"No."

His voice was quieter.

"You don't."

Emma's heart began to race.

He stepped closer.

"I care about you more than I know how to explain."

She swallowed.

"Then try."

He looked at her.

The rain continued behind them.

The entire campus seemed impossibly quiet.

"I think about you when you're not around."

Emma's breath caught.

"I look for you when I walk into a room."

She didn't move.

"I notice when you're upset even when you pretend you're not."

"Ethan..."

"And when you're happy..."

He smiled faintly.

"I want to be the reason."

Emma's eyes softened.

"Why?"

His expression became vulnerable.

"Because somewhere along the way, you became..."

He stopped.

Emma waited.

"Became what?"

He looked at her lips for the briefest second.

Then back into her eyes.

"Important."

She smiled.

"You've already said that."

"I know."

"Then say something else."

He laughed softly.

"You're really making this difficult."

"You said you wanted to explain."

"I do."

"Then explain."

He stepped closer.

Close enough that Emma could feel the warmth of him despite the cold rain.

"I think..."

He stopped again.

Emma whispered—

"Think what?"

"I think I'm scared."

Her smile faded.

"Of me?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Of what happens if I stop pretending this is just friendship."

Emma's heart pounded.

"Ethan..."

"I don't know what happens after that."

She looked at him.

"Maybe we find out."

He stared at her.

"You don't know what you're saying."

"I do."

"Emma—"

"I'm not asking you to promise me anything."

She took a small step closer.

"I'm asking you to stop being afraid of something that hasn't happened yet."

His breathing changed.

For a moment, neither moved.

Emma could feel her heart beating against her ribs.

Ethan's gaze dropped to her lips again.

She noticed.

And this time, she didn't look away.

He leaned closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As though giving her every opportunity to stop him.

She didn't.

Their faces were inches apart.

Emma closed her eyes.

Ethan's breath brushed against her cheek.

One more second.

One more movement.

And—

"Ethan!"

A voice called from across the courtyard.

They jumped apart.

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

"You're kidding."

Emma covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

A student approached them, waving.

"Sorry! I thought you were someone else."

Ethan stared at him.

"Clearly."

The student looked confused.

"Uh... good night."

"Good night," Emma said quickly.

He walked away.

Silence returned.

Emma looked at Ethan.

He looked at her.

Then they both started laughing.

"I hate this campus," Ethan muttered.

Emma laughed harder.

"You should've seen your face."

"I was having a moment."

"I noticed."

"Then someone destroyed it."

"Maybe the universe is trying to tell us something."

"What?"

Emma smiled.

"That we're terrible at timing."

Ethan looked at her.

"Maybe."

The laughter faded.

The tension returned.

But this time, it was different.

Softer.

Warmer.

Emma reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

Ethan looked down at their hands.

Then back at her.

"Good night, Emma."

"Good night."

He started walking away.

After a few steps, he turned.

"Emma?"

"Yeah?"

His smile was small.

"But someday..."

She waited.

"I'm going to finish that sentence."

Her heart fluttered.

"I'll hold you to it."

He nodded.

Then he walked away.

Emma watched until he disappeared around the corner.

She touched her lips.

They hadn't kissed.

Not quite.

But somehow, the almost felt more powerful.

Because now they both knew.

The line between friendship and something more had been crossed.

Not completely.

Not officially.

But enough.

And neither of them could pretend otherwise anymore.
