There was no light.
No snow.
No sound of the creature.
Only..
Falling.
Not downward.
Not through air.
But through absence.
The player tried to move his arms, but they felt impossibly far away—like commands being sent to a body that no longer remembered how to exist.
He opened his mouth.
No breath came.
No sound.
No heartbeat.
For one impossible moment..
he was certain he had ceased to have form.
Then..
A thin white line appeared.
Not light.
Not energy.
Something older.
Something purer.
It split the darkness in two.
And a voice followed—neither male nor female, neither old nor young:
"You are not dead…"
A pause.
"But the Fifth World no longer knows where to place you."
✦ 1 — The Intervoid
Movement stopped instantly.
The player found himself standing on a transparent surface stretching into infinity.
No sky.
No horizon.
No gravity.
Only an endless field of pale shifting light, constantly folding into itself—as if time were trying to enter…
and failing.
Symbols drifted beneath his feet.
Fragments of numbers.
Broken memories.
Frozen echoes of voices he almost recognized.
Each step sent ripples through the void..
but instead of footprints..
memories appeared.
A child laughing.
A laboratory door.
A blue chamber.
A scream.
Then nothing.
Words slowly formed in the air:
❄ THE INTERVOID
Where place does not belong…
and time cannot fully exist.
A faint pulse moved through the emptiness.
And with every pulse..
the world changed shape.
Mountains became oceans.
Oceans became corridors.
Corridors became stars.
Then dissolved.
That was why the Shadowborn could not follow here.
And why..
the player could not remain long.
A voice rose behind him.
Calm.
Certain.
"I knew you would arrive here… before the Fifth World finished writing itself."
The player turned.
And froze.
Not Elise.
Not Rio.
Not a shadow.
Not an enemy.
Himself.
✦ 2 — Nexus Echo
The figure stood only a few steps away.
Same height.
Same face.
Same posture.
Same scars.
Same presence.
But the eyes..
The eyes were wrong.
Blue mirrors.
Endless.
Reflective.
Ancient.
Calm in ways no living human should ever be.
This was not a copy.
Not a projection.
Not a system simulation.
Words appeared in pale blue light between them:
✦ NEXUS ECHO — The Echo of Connection
A version that had always existed.
Watching.
Waiting.
Remembering.
The Echo stepped forward.
And with each movement..
the void shifted.
White.
Blue.
Gray.
White again.
"You accelerated the child's birth," the Echo said quietly.
The player forced his voice to work.
"Who is he?"
A pause.
"Why does he say I took him?"
The Echo smiled.
Not mockingly.
Not cruelly.
But like someone who had carried an answer for far too long.
"Because…"
he said softly.
"You did."
The player's stomach tightened.
His hands curled into fists.
"When?"
The Echo slowly raised his hand.
And the void answered.
✦ 3 — The Missing Beginning
An image formed in the air.
Clearer than memory.
Sharper than reality.
A laboratory.
Cold white walls.
Blue containment chambers.
Screaming alarms.
Scientists running.
Glass cracking.
And there..
standing among them..
was the player.
Younger.
Smaller.
Wearing a uniform he did not recognize.
His breath caught.
"No…"
The image continued.
He watched himself approach a containment chamber.
Inside..
a child.
Incomplete.
Half-formed.
Eyes of living darkness.
The child pressed a tiny hand against the glass.
And the younger version of him..
placed his hand against it.
The Echo whispered:
"You were there…"
A pause.
"Not as a player."
The void pulsed.
The player's knees nearly gave out.
The Echo's voice grew softer.
"But as part of the project."
The transparent ground beneath them rippled violently.
The player stared at his own hands.
As if seeing them for the first time.
"That's impossible…"
The Echo stepped closer.
Close enough to feel.
Close enough to believe.
"Crossing worlds was never the beginning of your story."
The player's voice came out weaker than he expected.
"Then what was?"
The Echo looked directly into him.
And answered:
"Consequence."
A long silence.
Then…
"The consequence… of an experiment that failed to finish."
✦ 4 — Return… But Changed
Before he could ask another question..
The Intervoid cracked.
A sharp fracture tore through the endless pale sky..
like glass breaking across existence itself.
The pulse became unstable.
Reality bent.
The Echo lowered his head slightly.
"We don't have time."
He stepped forward.
And placed one hand against the player's chest.
The touch felt..
familiar.
Ancient.
Like touching a memory older than birth.
Then..
White light exploded outward.
Cold.
Snow.
Gravity.
Pain.
The player slammed back into the Fifth World.
Air rushed violently into his lungs.
He collapsed onto frozen ground.
Coughing.
Breathing.
Alive.
Nearby..
Elise stirred in the snow.
She pushed herself upright..
eyes wide.
Terrified.
"You disappeared."
Her voice trembled.
"Completely."
She looked at him like she wasn't entirely certain he was real.
"Like the world couldn't register you."
The player tried to answer..
but stopped.
Because the valley..
had changed.
Black fractures now covered the snow.
Miles of them.
Like the footsteps of something enormous.
The air felt heavier.
Older.
Wrong.
And then..
A voice came from the ridge above.
"There you are."
The player looked up.
And his blood froze.
✦ 5 — Stage Two
The Shadowborn stood above them.
Different now.
Taller.
Stronger.
More stable.
More human.
Its limbs no longer looked unfinished.
Its face..
was beginning to make sense.
Elise's voice dropped to a whisper.
"…No."
She grabbed the player's arm.
Hard.
"That thing…"
A pause.
Her fingers tightened.
"It's not copying you anymore."
The Shadowborn began walking down the ridge.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
And with every step..
the snow beneath its feet vanished.
Not melted.
Erased.
Then..
the valley shook.
Mountains trembled.
Ice cracked.
The wind stopped.
Even the falling snow froze in midair.
A voice rose..
not from the sky.
Not from the ground.
But from the world itself.
Ancient.
Massive.
Impossible.
"THE ORIGIN TRIAL… PROCEEDS TO STAGE TWO."
The violet pulse reignited inside the player's chest.
Harder than before.
Deeper.
Alive.
Elise shouted:
"The valley is part of the test now!"
The Shadowborn took one final step.
Its form shifted.
Bones stretched.
Skin darkened.
Features sharpened.
Until..
it stood there…
wearing his face.
Perfectly.
Exactly.
But empty.
No soul.
No warmth.
No humanity.
The player stared.
Unable to breathe.
Unable to move.
And then..
it smiled first.
