Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – A Secret Past

Three years ago, his name was impossible to ignore.

It was on buildings, signed across contracts, spoken in quiet tones by men who feared him and openly by women who wanted his attention. He had built everything from nothing—and everyone knew it.

Now, no one did.

He had let the name go. Not in one moment, not dramatically, but piece by piece until it no longer belonged to him. The company, the penthouse, the constant noise of people wanting something—he left it all behind.

Most people would have called it madness.

To him, it was the only way to breathe.

Because somewhere along the way, things had stopped feeling real. Smiles felt rehearsed. Conversations had hidden motives. Even the words that were supposed to mean the most—I love you—always came with expectations attached.

He got tired of trying to figure out what was genuine and what wasn't.

So he disappeared.

These days, his world was smaller. Quieter. A worn-out coat, a park bench, long nights with nothing but his thoughts for company.

He thought that was what he wanted.

But silence has its own weight.

That night, lying on a cold bench and staring up at the narrow strip of sky trapped between tall buildings, the same question returned, stubborn as ever:

Would anyone ever love him… if they didn't know who he was?

He shut his eyes, as if that might push the thought away.

Instead, another image came.

Her.

The waitress from earlier—Clara.

He could still picture the way she smiled at him. Not forced, not polite. Just… natural.

Then the ring on her finger came back to him.

He exhaled slowly.

Of course.

It was never that simple.

Across the city, in a place far warmer and brighter, Clara's fiancé sat laughing, his arm draped around someone who wasn't her. Careless. Comfortable. Completely unaware.

Unaware that someone had started paying attention.

Watching patterns. Noticing details.

Waiting.

The city moved on like it always did, full of people and noise and things left unsaid.

But beneath all that… something had shifted.

And without realizing it, he had just stepped back into a world he thought he'd left behind.
