Chapter 73 - Chapter 72: Resolve - I

The grand, disco-lit hall of Newkama Land was suffocatingly quiet.

Light Yagami stood beside the heavy wooden table, his dark eyes locked onto the blistered, agonizingly frail form of Monkey D. Luffy. The rubber boy was fighting a brutal, cellular war against Magellan's ultimate poison, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.

"Looks like you were unable to save your brother," Light stated gently. It wasn't a taunt. It was a simple, blunt observation of the grim reality they were currently sitting in.

Luffy's eyes fluttered open. The pain was clearly ravaging his mind, threatening to pull him down into the dark abyss of unconsciousness, but the fire in his dark eyes hadn't dimmed in the slightest.

"I'm... not done," Luffy wheezed, his voice weak but absolute. The sheer, terrifying conviction in his tone made the air in the room feel heavy. "I'm going to heal... and I'm going to save him. Ace is... going home with me."

Light stared into the boy's eyes for a long moment. There was no deception. There was no hesitation. Just an irrational, beautiful, blinding determination that completely defied all logic.

A slow, complex smirk spread across Light's face.

"I am heading down to Level 6 to finish cleaning up," Light said, his voice dropping to a perfectly calm, echoing register. "If I see your brother down there... and if his soul isn't complete filth... I might just think about pulling him out of that cell myself."

Across the room, the reaction to Light's promise was instantaneous.

Zoro and Sanji exchanged a look of pure, unadulterated horror. They forced themselves to sit up, ripping their bandages, their faces instantly paling with a profound dread that had absolutely nothing to do with Magellan's poison.

They weren't idiots like their captain. They knew perfectly well what that statement meant.

If his soul isn't complete filth.

Portgas D. Ace was a pirate. He was the Second Division Commander of the legendary Whitebeard Pirates. He had fought Marines, and he had survived in the brutal, unforgiving waters of the New World.

What were the chances?

More importantly, could they afford to leave it on chances?

Zoro knew Light's unyielding threshold for execution. If Light walked into the Eternal Hell, looked at Ace, and saw that his 'Bad Karma' as he calls it exceeded that limit... Light wouldn't save him. Light would be the one to sever Ace's head right there in his cell.

"We have to get up," Zoro growled, his eyes wide with frantic, terrifying urgency. He gripped the edge of the wooden table, his knuckles turning stark white as he desperately tried to force his paralyzed, poison-ravaged legs to move.

"Cook, we have to get up right now!"

"I know!" Sanji cursed, sweating profusely, forcing himself to his feet only to immediately collapse back onto his knees. "Dammit! Move, legs! Move!"

"What are you two doing?!" Ivankov yelled, rushing over with fresh bandages. "Your bodies are broken! You cannot fight! You need to rest and let the antivenom circulate!"

"You don't understand!" Zoro yelled back, pointing a trembling finger at Light. "If he gets to Ace before we do... he's going to execute him!"

Luffy slowly turned his head on the wooden table, looking at his panicked swordsman and cook. The rubber boy didn't look terrified. He didn't look desperate. He just smiled—a weak, blistering, but entirely genuine smile.

"It's fine, Zoro," Luffy rasped, his voice cutting through the panic in the room.

Zoro froze, staring at his captain. "Luffy, you know what this guy does—"

"I know," Luffy interrupted softly. He shifted his dark eyes back to Light, staring directly into the False Deity's cold, calculating gaze.

He looked at Light, past the terrifying aura, past the black coat, and saw the man who had just apologized to Bonney.

"He won't hurt Ace. He's a good guy."

Light's breath caught in his throat for a fraction of a second. The absolute, unshakeable trust radiating from the boy was staggering. It defied evidence. It defied the mountain of corpses Light had just left on the upper floors.

Light didn't reply. He couldn't. He simply turned his back on the table, his long black coat sweeping behind him as he walked toward the heavy iron doors leading back into the frozen wasteland of Level 5.

"Stay alive, Straw Hat," Light called back, the heavy doors slowly swinging shut behind him. "The real war hasn't even started yet."

[ LEVEL 5 — THE FREEZING HELL ]

The biting, sub-zero wind of the tundra howled through the dark stone corridors.

Light Yagami walked slowly through the blizzard, the sheer cold completely unable to penetrate the dense, invisible layer of basic Armament Haki coating his skin. He was entirely alone in the ice.

It was time.

He had nearly seventeen million Karma Points sitting in his reserves. The upcoming war at Marineford was going to be an absolute bloodbath. Whitebeard, the three Marine Admirals, the Warlords of the Sea... Light knew that his current Haki simply wouldn't cut it against the true apex predators of this world.

If he wanted to stand above them, if he wanted to impose his absolute justice and actually protect the few people he now realized he cared about, he needed to ascend.

Light mentally opened his system interface, looking at the costs.

"System," Light whispered into the freezing wind. "Let's start."

[ KARMA SYSTEM ] [ KP: 16,845,000 ]

[ Upgrading Observation Haki: Lv. 3 ➔ Lv. 4 (Future Sight). Cost: 3,000,000 KP. ][ Processing... Confirmed. ]

The change was violently instantaneous.

Light gasped, his dark eyes widening as his perception of reality fundamentally fractured. The world around him seemed to stutter. The howling blizzard didn't just slow down; it duplicated. He saw a snowflake falling toward his shoulder. But simultaneously, layered over his vision like a ghostly projection, he saw the exact same snowflake hitting his coat three seconds before it actually happened.

It was a terrifying, mind-bending cascade of sensory information. He wasn't just predicting intent anymore; he was actively perceiving the immediate, branching timelines of physical reality.

Don't stop.

[ Upgrading Conqueror's Haki: Lv. 1 ➔ Lv. 2 (Targeted Domination). Cost: 2,000,000 KP. ][ Upgrading Conqueror's Haki: Lv. 2 ➔ Lv. 3 (Physical Manifestation). Cost: 4,000,000 KP. ][ Processing... Confirmed. ]

A deep, resonant vibration echoed from the very core of his soul. The raw, untamed willpower that had spontaneously awakened during his fight with Akainu was suddenly refined, condensed, and magnified to a terrifying degree.

Light didn't even flex his aura, but the dense, sheer weight of his spirit leaked into the physical world. The thick, solid ice coating the walls of the corridor began to loudly crack and splinter around him. The stone beneath his boots spider-webbed under the sheer, oppressive gravity of his presence. He felt an absolute, unquestionable sovereignty over the space around him.

And now... the fuel to burn it all, Light thought.

[ Upgrading Life Force: Lv. 10 ➔ Lv. 15. Cost: 5,000,000 KP. (1,000,000 KP per Level) ][ Processing... Confirmed. ]
